I was a TV reporter in Maine. About 10 years ago, I did a similar experiment with a Ford Escape. I plowed it into a snowbank to see if I could make it overnight. I was mostly concerned with asphyxiation. I kept the muffler clear and ran the the car periodically, shutting it off to fall asleep and awakening when I got cold. I easily made it overnight. I got a lot of response including comments by a trucker who took used cars from the East Coast to California. The fuel in the cars affected his mileage. He told us he would run the cars he was carrying and "make them lighter" as he went west. He felt most cars, starting with a full tank, would idle for three days. We took the Escape, filled it up and let it run. It went for 70 hours. Now I have a Tesla. I think if I got stuck in a Virginia traffic jam, I would just set it at about 68 degrees, recline the seat and await rescue. Uh, where's the bathroom in these things? :)

I left my 2019 model 3 parked at the Las Vegas Airport (outside) last summer and it was easily 109°f/ 43°c every day for the high (which meant the cabin would get way hotter). I think another big advantage of EVs versus ICE cars when it comes to idling, is that with an EV you can idle anywhere without it being frowned upon. If you live in a very urban/dense area, then it is very nice to be able to stay inside a warm or cold car. With ICE cars, I never want to do that for long because I don't want to burden other people with my exhaust fumes. Thank you for the video though, it was very informative.

hey Bjørn, one thing to mention aswell. when i had my Petrol (not diesel) car, i was in a congestion in winter. just leaving the engine running on idle did not produce enough heat for the cabin. i had the rev up the engine to around 2.000 rpm to produce enough heat to keep the cabin warm. my display then showed a consumption of 1.8 liters per hour. (Was a Mazda 3 with a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine). i got roughly 50 liters in the tank, so you can imagine how long it would last. - so a biiiiiiig win for EV's

@@petrosrz8990 that can't be in low temperature for prolonged time? Burning 0.6 l/h means about 6kW. Around 2kW is used to keep engine running, 4 kW left. A lot of that is going out the exhaust. Then add heatloss, and there simply is not enough leftover heat to give the cabin those 3-4 kW of heat you'll need. I guess it has to consume at least 1 l/h then, and that gives it shorter idletime than the Tesla showed..
@nakfan
@nakfan 3 жыл бұрын
We have a Webasto heater in our car. I think it consumes around 0.5 - 1 liter per hour in normal winter temperatures. BUT you have to remember to start the engine and idle for 5-10 minute's after around 45 - 60 minutes on the heater else you will drain the 12v battery...!

Not only is it (and I guess you know that) the biggest charging park* in Germany (and most of Europe - and also they're planning on and are very commited to doubling the chargers this year), but also, they offer organic food and even grow their own salad - well worth a visit or two :-) * currently: 12x Tesla V3, 8x Tesla V2, 8x Fastned 300kW - plus16x Type2

All EVs should have camp mode and “survival mode” - where the car would toggle between 15• and 10• - or maybe 20• and 5• every other hour. Somehow last 4 weeks while keeping you alive while you have to survive on your gas station food rations until your wifey noticed you’re missing and sends a search party.

For realism, both tanks should be half empty as if you had traveled a considerable distance and broke somewhere or got into a snowstorm. Do you have to buy special winter tires that are expensive? I've heard that with the Model X, there is a piece of the suspension that comes outward, stopping one from putting on a larger tires so you need low profile tires to go around the wheels which restricts one from using chains when stuck on a mountain road. Please let me know what you think! You seem to be the Tesla expect on the internet who lives in a climate similar to me. Have a lovely day!!

so people do that? i don't think that's realistic...i don't think the point here was to make it last longer, but to see how it consume on normal use without driving.

@Irena Tanase bjorn made a video talking about that, it made 0 impact. Literally 0. The energy use at 21C vs 19C or even 15C was the same. So it’s literally better to stay comfortable than to worry about temperature!

@@hollymolly518 heating the recirculating the air would take less energy than warming fresh air but occasionally you’d need to pull fresh air to reduce the amount of moisture. And the point of the video is to see how long you can keep the car alive on the battery.

@@SirHackaL0t. uh yea i don't know why you explaining this to me. and yes the point is how long "but not trying to make it longer with unrealistic situation"....does most people turn recirculating on? i would think not, but I'm not an expert. i have never seen someone turn that on normally, including the taxi drivers. the only time i turn that on is when the smell from the oudside is so bad.

@@hollymolly518 Would most people sit in a car for three days continuously? But if you had to, got snowed in etc then it could make a difference.

how about simulating a real emergency situation ? ... about 15 °C (that must be enough ;-)) and a real efficient configuration for the goal of maximum count of hours

The real emergency situation would be stuck in a snowstorm in a temperature that would be much colder than the -3C, much less 15C this test was run.

maybe its a safety feature with 0% and still running, could be that when people pull over to charge it would give them a bit more time if they are rly low

its basically a reserve, you if you miscalculate or get stuck in traffic on your way to the charger, your car won't die on the way. The 1kW was probably just to protect and warm up the battery

Excellent video. Reminded me of the stories of people being stuck in their cars on the A9 in Scotland in snow drifts... One day - test a Cybertruck (with the standard PV cells in the loading bay cover) in the Summer months. Set the HVAC to 20°C and see how many weeks it runs for? 😬
