Most new ponds will experience some kind of issue, wether that's algae or water clarity, sometimes both. This is quite normal and will eventually settle once the ecosystem establishes itself.
This is currently my favourite type of bacteria- amzn.to/3GXeRqZ (amazon affilate link)
If you are looking to buy diatomix here's a link- diatomix.com.au. Add code "ozponds" at checkout to get free shipping.
If you can't get diatomix try nualgi- amzn.to/3XIoHDe (amazon affiliate link)

Another great informative video Kev, thank you. I built a small barrel pond earlier this year and struggled to get the water quality right, then I found your video on building bio filters, so I made one and within two weeks the water was stable and my couple of goldfish a lot more happier. There’s still string algae but the fish seam to enjoy it. Next year I’m building a raised brick pond and your videos will help me through that process. Have a great weekend. Mark (in the UK)

Nice video again Kev, it helps to wash the gravel of the bog filter you are right about having a very slow flow rate into the bog

Great video again Kev. As far as algae goes, I think you mentioned it likes to grow near dead plant matter that is breaking down. I have noticed that too, but what annoys me is how it also likes to grow all over the stems of my water lillies, even though they are still living! just ruins the look of them 😒

Thanks mate. I hate that too! But once the diatoms take hold the string algae should bugger off. The diatoms are like jelly.

I had a little trouble with long green strings of algae but that was before I set up my barrel bog. I have had fish in for a few weeks now, the water is still clear and I am no longer seeing the big clumps of algae. I don’t feed the fish often, but when I do, instead of the normal feeding frenzy of rosy barbs I get mild indifference. So maybe they are eating all the algae. My pond has had the help of regular filter squeezings from my indoor aquariums so I think seeding it with bacteria and the other tiny water life gave it a big head start.

Hey Mate, Love the videos. Just a question where do you get all your rocks from? Particularly the bigger ones.
@Ozponds

Local garden supply yards. Same place you’d buy mulch, sand, road base, top soil, decorative pebble, etc. Some yards will even specialise in rock.

thank you for your great posts. I find using floating plants as a great method for using up nutrients in my aquariums, do you suppose they would do the same thing in a new pond?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Жыл бұрын
They do. But you really need to make sure you want them, as you know most floaters spread incredible fast. If the filtration is dialled in there shouldn’t be very much nutrient available. Of course the filtration needs time to establish and mature.

Hi Kev , thank you for another great video . I am going to attempt to make a bog filter this year but I don't own a drill and I am not very handy . Is there any chance you could make a video for people with a very low skill set , where you explain things to me as though I am 5 years old? 🤔🙋‍♂️🐠🐟🐡🌴🌾🌿☘

Well it depends doesn’t it. It’s just easier to maintain a pond with low fish numbers.

🤔 my pond is only liquid for ~6-7 months of the year. Does that mean its always going to be in a state of maturing?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t think so. There would be organisms and bacteria that are surviving, maybe even thriving during your mini ice age.

Hey Kev I have a question bud. So my pond is about W-3m, L-6m, D-1.2m and a joined piece of L-5m, W-1m, D-500mm. I breed my feeder fish and 6 sleepy cod about 10cm atm in the smaller pond section separated by rocks with gaps big enough for feeder fish but not the 30 12cm jade perch I have in the bigger side... Have I got way to many fish? I was keeping them to eat but I'm constantly getting algae and it is also a feature pond like you have done (just not as good as yours lol). They also nibble at your feet and the kids think it's funny so they are well kept. Also if you have found a way can you do a video on keeping out cane toads? They are constantly getting in the pond and breeding and even tho the little pricks sound good in the rain they are horrible to have so many and the tadpoles make the pond look unclean. Great video mate, love the content👍

It is possible you have too many fish, I’m also guessing you are adding additional food to the pond to support the feeder fish? I assume the pond is matured? Someone told me that jade perch will eat algae? (Which is cool most natives aren’t interested). Have you tried diatomix? In regards to the frogs I have no idea. We don’t get cane toads down here. Lots of frogs though. I just figure they are part and parcel of the ecosystem. Unfortunately up there the toads have become established in the ecosystem. Hopefully someone with some first hand experience with cane toads can give you a better answer. Good luck 🤞
@BenJamin-dw6jx
@BenJamin-dw6jx Жыл бұрын
@@Ozponds the ponds about 1years old now and I never feed the feeder fish as they happily graze on algae, plant roots and very small insects. The perch do eat the algae which helps and they feed on the other fish as well as they have figured out to only eat the bellies of the cane toads (that's a bit crazy lol) but the toads don't tend to go towards the bigger fish now. We only feed the big ones once a fortnight, sometimes longer because there is enough food of fish/algae and roots to keep them happy (plus by not feeding regularly you can actually hand feed them and yes the fish are all very healthy). I will definitely give the diatomix a go and see how I go.
