So the big question every new curly girl asked themselves is HOW LONG IS THIS GONNA TAKE?!? WHEN WILL MY HAIR STOP LOOKING LIKE COUSIN IT?!? This video is an overview of how I personally got from point A (straight damaged hair) to point B (my shiny healthy waves). Spoiler Progress is not linear. Its not all awesome hair days. There are a bunch of aspects of my journey I didn't get to cover. For example: how long styling itself takes, applying stylers, diffusing, air drying, plopping ect. The whole aspect of learning how to style my hair all over again was a process in and of itself!
I hope this video is encouraging to you! If you are in the early stages of the Curly Girl Method and really struggling, you are not ALONE!

Hey there guys! I hope this video is encouraging! I know that I have definitely felt discourage while doing the CGM. I just wanted to throw in the microfiber towel and quit! But take time...lots and lots of time to get this game simi mastered. And that's ok! Give yourself grace as your hair heals and your are learning!

Swavy Curly Courtney Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing this. I’m super discouraged, because I have been going curly girl for almost a full year and I’ve seen very little progress, even after getting three curly girl cuts And religiously keeping track of what I use on my hair. I think the problem is I still don’t know what my hair needs. My hair type is extremely similar to yours (very fine, and barely wavy). After watching your video, I’m not sure what products work best for you, could you please elaborate on that? I’m just stuck in a rut, and tired of styling with very little results. Typically my hair will look good for an hour or two, then it goes back to its limp, mildly frizz, anti-definition state. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Thank you so much - I have just started but have also fallen off the wagon. So much “baggage” attached to my hair. Anyway I found doing the aphogee treatment per kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aM16q7Olla_eink.html ( beauty by Lisa 101) really helped !

@monkeygirl000 Not Swavy Curly Courtney here, but I've watched a lot of her videos. And yes, she does have some natural wave to her hair that she started enhancing. There's something called The Curly Girl Method that a lot of us have started following to enhance natural wavy, curly or kinky/coily hair. I've learned that a number of us thought we had "straight but frizzy" or "barely wavy" hair but once we learned how to take care of it well, a lot more of the natural wave/curl pattern started coming out.

Hi curl friend 🧡 I will share some of my journey to make you feel better as well. In february 2019 I went to get a haircut (i would say about 3-4 inches) and from the next day i had planned to take care of my hair. I started oiling on washday and I went sulfate free with a gentle non foaming cleanser (not silicone free) and i got my first leave in. My hair looked better, not great but it was wavy and I was happy. In september I got a trim and after that i did a few final wash and I went silicone free and full cgm: for a month my hair was HORRIBLE, so so dry and stringy that i actually cried, it looked like i needed to cut 5 more inches off. I told myself to wait for 2 months and to only cut after that. After maybe a month and a half from the haircut my hair magically got a lot better, so I guess the worst part of my transitioning was done. Still my ends were so much straigher than all the rest! This month it finally looks better all the way to the ends, which are still stringier because i had it lightened up to 2018, but it actually looks decent and it is very soft and shiny. I am very happy now and looking forward to new improvement, but it has been a year of taking care of my hair, in which satisfaction only came towards the very end! Be patient and learn protective styles like braids because those saved me from excessive washing an bad hair depression 😂 good luck 🧡💪

For me I'm not even focused on my curl pattern. I'm just trying to deal with the texture of my hair. I used to believe that the post shower floof I had was just something I had to deal with. That any time I washed my hair I'd have to wait a day for it to look...normal. What my hair will actually turn out like? Who knows but I'm here to learn to actually take of my hair. That being said, we all need encouragement when our hair dries out to looking like you've had electric shock on only parts of your head. So thank you! You're lovely!

I LOVE that you addressed the time you stopped doing the “curly girl” part and went back to wash/condition/brush. That’s what I currently do, and I love how my hair looks when I shower, comb, air dry. It’s smooth and shiny. I started attempting curly girl-esque methodology yesterday with the products I already had on hand (thanks, quarantine), and I think I’ll successfully get somewhere in the 2 range and have it looking nice once I refine my techniques, but I was worried about not being able to go back to that simple, wet brush, silky hair method I’ve had for years, because I like how my hair looks like that. It’s encouraging to know that I can go back and forth as long as I’m making sure to use good products in my hair in the meantime!

This is really encouraging... But my biggest struggles are 1) how to know if you're doing it right and it just takes time or if you are doing it wrong and need to change your routine and 2) how to look professional enough in the transition to be able to go to work and events without issues. I'm 5 days in and every day I'm scared my boss is going to say something to me and I have a wedding tomorrow that I don't want to look gross for 😞

This gives me so much hope! For the first 14 years of my life I didn't even realize I had curls because I would just brush my hair out all the time to get rid of the "tangles." Even after I realized I had some waves/curls I had no clue how to style them. Around 16 I started trying different curly hair techniques, but being the impatient person I am, I got frustrated and quit after 2 or 3 days of not seeing any real results. I'm 19 now and I just started again a few days ago, and I'm sticking with it this time!

Thanks Courtney. You have no idea how much you have helped me. I sort of started the CGM years ago, and bought one product line thinking I was done. I was also transitioning to my natural hair color which is now gray. I too thought that it was too much work, and was ready to give up on the method when I found your channel. I have learned soooooooo much! My hair is looking better than it has my whole life, and I have you to thank for it. You are fun and charming, but more importantly, you have taught this old dog some new tricks! After 4 months of disappointment, I’m taking an indefinite break from CG styling. I spent hours on my hair and hated it 80% of the time- it looked good for maybe 20 minutes after styling and then went flat, frizzy, and tangled. I think my hair just isn’t curly enough. Even though I quit bleaching my hair, chopped off inches of damage, learned how to style my hair without daily heat, and figured out better products to use, the results vs the effort it took just wasn’t worth it for me. Now I style my hair with soft pillow rollers, brush it once a day, and use hairspray. The predictability and overall look makes me so much happier with my hair. I’m sad I couldn’t make CG work for me but I guess it just be like that sometimes

Laura--It sounds like you found a styling routine that works for your hair and lifestyle, that's fantastic! If all you learned from following the CGM is that it doesn't work for your waves and that you need rollers to shape your hair, that's still a gain. Hopefully you also learned which ingredients to look for and what to avoid in order to keep your scalp and strands healthy. Don't be disappointed or sad, if you're happy with the routine you eventually developed, then that's good as gold!

@@evastra1047 A few ideas, just to trouble shoot: Are you sleeping with your hair gathered in a pineapple? (That would minimize the tangles.) Are you using a silk or satin pillowcase? (That would prevent the frizz.) You probably have tried everything, but it doesn't hurt to go back to basics and see if being consistent with those steps will help. One more question: have you tried "refreshing" after brushing? I have 2b hair, and even if I brush, I'm able to dampen my hair and scrunch, and the waves come back.

Thank you for the inspiration to keep at it. It helps to see that your journey had some bumps along the way. I quit the CGM after 2 months figuring it wasn’t working for me because I just wasn’t wavy. So I focused on improving my hair health, sticking to CG approved products and staying away from heat styling, but giving up wavy styling techniques. I kept watching your channel because a) you’re adorable and b) it was helping me learn how to care for my hair. The glycer-frizz struggle is real, wavy or straight! 2 months later I set aside my wave envy and started tinkering with ways to style my almost-not-there-waves. And lo and behold there are baby waves! Just in the past week I’m finally figuring out what my 1C/2A hair needs. Almost 6 months of trial and error but I’m finally having decent wavy days, maybe not by anyone else’s definition but I’m happy! It’s been a lot to learn. But your videos have helped get me here and I’m excited now to see where I might end up. Thank you!

I'm super new to the wavy/curly journey. From what I've seen in my hair so far is that it really depends on the condition of your hair prior to starting. I rarely used heat(once every other month at most), use professional products(cosmetology student), and only demi permanent pro color once a month. I'm only 2 weeks in and I'm seeing a lot of really exciting process. This process has also helped me see how much is lacking in the pro hair community when it comes to all hair textures, it's better than it used to be but there's still so much to be learned.

I started the CGM about three weeks ago when all of a sudden some of my hair decided to be a little wavy after washing it. I always thought I had straight hair (even though I wished my hair was wavy - there's some wavy hair on my mum's side) and earlier attempts with the CGM failed. But now, with a bit of experimenting, more and more waves form after each wash and they're here to stay, even after sleeping! I'm happy I found your channel because it's a great introduction to the CGM and also very encouraging to see your journey. Thank you!

Instagram and youtube makes it seem very linear and it seriously bogged me down because my hair just went straight for long time and i didn't know what to do! I also found that I'm happy with my minimal effort hair style. I usually just wash my hair and let it air dry and i get these beautiful curls just at the end of my hair and I love it. When I put in a whole lot of effort, I get stronger waves, especially in front, but honestly for everyday thing its not worth it! Thanks for this video Courtney! This gave me hope. I started to try out the curly girl method four or five months ago, but gave up a couple months after succesive bad hair days. University was hectic, and I was out of the house for 10 hours so I could never freshen up my curls. Frizzy hair all day, sometimes I'd try wetting it a bit at the uni's bathrooms, sometimes I even brushed it out cos I was so done with frizz and uneven waves. My hair is 2c-3a at my deeper bottom layers but for some reason it would almost never hold the wave on the topper layer, partly because it's so damaged from heat and the sun. Recently I gave up on the mess and got a keratin treatment to even it all out. This video has motivated me to get back on track and embrace my wavy hair! Thankyou Courtney kisses from Spain xx

Thank you so much for this video (understatement). I have just started out as I think that I might have ever so slightly wavy hair. I'm on my first day and thinking, well I should just give up already, but then you mentioned noodle hair and I have frizzy noodle hair! So now I'm excited about learning how to make my hair healthy and learn how to tune into what my hair is asking for. That's my take-home from this. Definitely saving this video as I know this uncomfortable sensation will come up time and time again because my ego is striving for beautiful, frizz free waves and that's not realistic. My hair used to be wavier and I wore it layered and natural for many years. When I moved to FL it turned into a dry, frizzy mess. My hair is fine, low density and no matter what product I use, no matter what method of application I use, my hair sticks to my head and whatever wave I get is gone by the end of the day. Refreshing is a nightmare and unless I start from scratch, my hair looks frizzy and dirty. Well, it is always frizzy! So I started to blow dry my hair. I love how soft and silky it feels when I do and I can go days without washing it. I still avoid parabens, sulfates, etc., use microfiber towels, sleep on satin, etc. But now I love my hair. I just don’t get all the work of the CGM with so little result. Oh well, call me a quitter.

Ines Invan I give you credit for keeping up the effort. To me, my hair and makeup has to be quick and easy. My curly hair just wasn’t either. It was a lot of study and trying different products and methods, and just too time consuming for a crappy result. Blow drying my hair is both quick and easy and gives me great results. The choice was a simple one for me. Good luck as you continue your curly hair mission.

I don't even know if I'm "100%" curly girl, and I really don't care. I've been mostly curly girl since mid-December-ish, but I've still straightened my hair a couple times (regretted it each time), sometimes use silicones if I feel like it, and diffuse on high speed. I don't know if it's because I never went full on curly girl or not, but I never went through the "horrible" stage. My hair was never UNBEARABLY greasy or anything like that. I still have quite a few "bad hair days", but 99% of the time it's because I used too much product, not because of my hair itself. And I bleached it a month or so ago. I don't know! I'm not as concerned with following every single rule as I am with getting my hair healthier, and doing what works best for me and my hair.

This video and a lot of the other videos you've made are such gems. Even though we have different hair textures, I am learning so much. Thank you for explaining things so simply and percisely. The first video I saw of yours was the video about 'flash drying', where the product actually pulls water from your hair leaving it rough and frizzy. I was so shocked, I hadn't even heard of that before. I am excited to experiment with my own curls! I'm taking notes!

It fell out the next day because i just used a sea salt spray and slept on it. I was starting to reconsider it because it wasn't looking great the next time i tried it and i wasn't sure if i was forcing my hair to be wavy. This video really helped me understand that it wont look good for a while and it's part of the process. I just picked up the all about curls starter kit i'm excited to try it out.

Currently in quarantine and I had my big chop a couple days ago, I passed from an almost waist length hair to a bob haha. my hair was so long yet some strands didn’t curl that much and I got tired of trying them to curl and my ends were so thin, so yeah, I did it. I know is going to take a while to grow but now will be healthier and curlier. Let’s hang in there people! I know is frustrating sometimes but We can do it. My dearest wish all of my life was to have curly hair. So much so that I got perms for 30 years, long or short. Although it took a perm really well and I chose good perms and good stlylists, and many people I knew always thought I was born with those curls, I always WANTED them to be real. COVID forced me to skip 4 haircuts in a row (I had a pixie and no perm) and I discovered that I DID have some curl! Not a lot but I was desperate to work with that. This is the second day of implementing some of your cheaper products and your techniques and although it certainly DOES take more time, it is SO WORTH IT!! Thank you for some hope that I may enjoy actual curly hair in the future. Cuz I am telling you! Curls make you look younger! And this 60 year old does not want to look every single one of her years. Thank you.

I did notice something about your hair that's similar to mine and that if it's slightly longer than shoulder length it falls into ringlets better. That doesn't mean keep super long just right where you have it is perfect. If it's too short it only waves but for some reason there's just this perfect length at which point your hair does it's natural thing and you can achieve your results with less work. Believe me I love the curls too. I had damaged hair but even when it was at it's longest moistures properly it fell in ringlets without much effort.

Interestingly enough when I started to do that 2 years in I found you🥰 I have high porosity, 3B/C fine, low density hair. I can’t do everything you have said but you have changed my hair for the better! Also-keep the science coming! No one’s results will be the same because we are all different and changing everyday as human bodies. 3 years in and still tweaking my routine.
