Can’t overemphasize the jog-walk for injury avoidance while gradually increasing mileage. Once you let go off the mental block or a feeling of defeat with placing both feet on the ground, it opens up much more mileage while maintaining ease. At the end of the day, for training purposes, mileage is mileage irrespective of whether it was interspersed with walk breaks. And as a beginner, you’ll likely even find that, with brief walk breaks, you are actually faster at 5K or more distances on overall average pace (counting even the walk portions) because the faster “recharged” running more than compensates for the slower walk portions until your body develops enough endurance to run faster continuously.

I always got pushed to go too far too early when I just started running. This would result in bad foot injuries that continuously stopped me. Bad shoes didn't help. I finally stood my ground and am starting easy and safely.

I only started running seriously in April 2020. I started between 2-3km as my initial run and did that about 3 times a week. I was already walking a fair bit as well which, I think, helped and it didn't take long before I managed to do a 5k. I'm now doing between 40-50km a month and I'm thinking of doing a marathon. My only regret was not listening to my body and the little niggles I would get, especially in my calf, as I ended up with a small calf tear back in April which meant I had to take a couple of weeks off. Like a lot of beginners a lot of my runs were in that intermediate zone between easy and hard which probably doesn't help as well.

The 60/120 method is what the military uses to condition new recruits for running distance. This is absolutely a great method to improve your run. In fact, I havent ran in about 6 months and will be using this to get back into it.

As a general rule when you finish your run ask yourself: would I be able to do that same run again? If your answer is yes, you did it right. We all overestimate our capabilities, even after years of running, and this leads to injury. Also do *your* run, walk in between and take it easy, if you’re running somewhere where there’s more people, ignore the urge to overtake or speed up. As you progress you will want to spice it up with a short sprint now and then, or changing your pace for a minute or two and then walking.

I'm doing the garmin coach 10k training program, 3 times per week, usually 2 drills (cadence, acceleration) and 1 long run (easy conversational pace) on Sunday with slowly increasing the distance per 2 weeks. It's kinda perfect for starting.

I started running over a year ago, doing 30 km per week now, but I still find on my easy runs I walk the hills and occasionally on the flat, to keep my pulse below 80% of max. Also I find if I run 90 % easy pace the weight loss was actually quicker, then when I tried 50 % moderately hard 50% easy.

Great tips. It’s always tricky though to suggest distance or pace numbers to beginners because they come in a wide variety. There are folks for whom 2-3K in 15-20 mins would be too much for example. Either disclaim or qualify it more or offer other examples for distance/pace combinations all the way to a point where it gets slower than walking speeds because that’s the level some beginners may be at: they can walk 1K faster than they can run it, but with a little training can quickly change that.

I started with 2x45minutes of activity because i played football earlier. It was run/jogg/walk.

I think run-walk is the better way to start, you can cover that 5k, wile you are really only running 2.5-3k of it.

For me it was how far can I run not how far should I run, as a 50-year-old not having run since school started with the couch to 5k

I'm 54 old, i have been running races all time, my best time was 1:37 in Brooklyn Halph, i used to run 13 miles every Sunday, but sunden very bad fall in Brooklyn bridge did stop me from enjoying my favourite sport for a long while, i tried to come back to my previous fitness, but i couldn't. Now i barely run 3 miles every week and i have to do stops, of course my pace became considerably slower around 12:30. I really do get frustrated and so disappointed, when I'm thinking about the time that i used to run, non stop. From Brooklyn to Central Park, i just can't believe it. Is it possible, that we can loose so much. Because we are aging? Or could be something else? Please, if somebody did encounter the same problem, or something similar, help me out, understand, how my running performance, could be dropped so considerably. Thatnk you, in advance. For your concern and help. My best Regards. Hicham.

You have forgot something? Meaning Consult your doctor - to do a medical Check for pre jogging Bloods Bp Urine Also to have a CT scan of heart to see if you have any blockages

15min for a 3K as your first run?!? This is why pro athletes should NOT give advice to beginners. A 5min/k pace might be nothing to a seasoned athlete but for a real beginner, your first run should be more like just slightly faster than your power walking pace. So we're more talking in the 10min/k to 8min/k range here. Do NOT try to run 3K in 15mins as your first run as a beginner, esp if you're also overweight.

Lol yeah 5min/k is my speed workouts now and I'm 4yrs in. To be fair, I think Mark said 15 mins OR 2.5-3km, so that's probably fine for beginners.

I don't think he ever said that you should run 3k in 15 minutes. 2-3k in 15 to 20 minutes is what he said. So that's 3k at 6:40/km pace at the fastest. Which will still be much for many people. I have coached people that could barely handle 9min/km. Which is walking pace.

1:50 He said “2.5-3km, or 15-20 minutes”: I'm pretty sure what he meant was 6min/k for 15min (2.5k) up to 6 :40min/k for 20min (3k), which I think is quite reasonable for someone with some level of fitness coming in. I don't think what he meant was “take the fastest number and combine it with the longest number”!

@@wilfdarr for someone with some level of fitness going in being the keyword here. Those kinds of numbers don't belong into a video talking about a first run for beginners and where you talk about couch to 5K, though. Which is exactly my point. It's like that running book supposedly for beginners by Herbert Steffny (a famous German runner) whose plans for 5K go all the way to 5K in 14:30. That's how you turn real beginners off the sport and how many people who might have the aerobic fitness but not the conditioning of their legs get injured. Not good. The points he made were really good but the numbers he gave are way too fast for a real beginner. Either you talk about couch to 5K, then really talk about the average couch sitter who is at least 10kg overweight or talk about people with some level of fitness but do not mix those groups. That's doing people and your sport a disservice.
