I STAYED. My bearded dragon is in her 17th year. 90% bugs supplemented with repashy. Occasional berries with pollen. Dont forget , plant material is full of oxalate and antinutrients. Dragons are insectivours. She never went for vegetation, and seemed to thrive on bugs. So i stuck with it for nearly 2 decades now. She doesnt eat every day.

Plant material has "antinutriants"? WHAT?
@feuerling
@feuerling 5 ай бұрын
@@suewillman26 some foods (no matter whether it's plant, animal, fungus, or made from microbes like algae) contain substances that bind to vitamins or minerals you or an animal may need, or otherwise interfere with the absorption of nutrients. That's why you shouldn't eat a lot of rhubarb for example (oxalic acid), or why goldfish aren't good as feeder fish in large amounts (thiaminase.) As usual, a varied diet is important in preventing issues. Bearded dragons are omnivores, so some greenery isn't going to make them keel over dead.

Awesome! Our little buddy is 14 and same, we've fed mainly bugs throughout its life. He loves snacking on dried mealworms. Usually good at dusting with calcium and have always used the correct UVB lighting. He's happy and healthy. Bee pollen is helpful for salads, for those who struggle. Just be careful not to overuse it, it can cause some tummy issues.

I LOVE your Sav. Have had the pleasure of having two males and a female, each for several years. Each one of them I considered as my children. The last one, would escape his enclosure/room come to my bedroom, open the door and beat me to bed. He'd sleep with me every chance he got and would stay snuggled next to me until I put him back in his converted room. Lost him about 2 years ago and I still mourn his loss every single day. But because they're all imported and wild caught and have so many challenges, I don't think I will ever get another, on purpose anyway. But of course if one finds me and needs help... Of course I will at least foster. Nothing in the world like the bond of a monitor, especially the Savs.

I STAYED. I dont do the stereotypical ratios with Stinky. He's still young and he is very active and runs around like mad. I give him a variety of greens and veggies, occasional fruit as a treat, repashy, and many different insects for variety and novelty. He gets bugs a couple times a week, but not as many as I know he could eat. His weight is stable, hes energetic and gives me attitude, and his little presents 💩 are heakth and regular. It seems to be what works for him.

I STAYED, too. That was very informative. A lot of the german books/websites say an adult dragon should have 70/30 ratio, which is why I feed mine every day greens and 3x a week 5 to 6 middle-sized roaches. Now, because I trust you more then the books, I will switch over to only 1x a week bugs, even I am sure Akira will hate that, but that's OK, I'll tell her you said so😏. And of course, I will look at the poop. There is nothing more entertaining than look at the poop.... Thanks for the video, this and all the others, they are helpful and I really appreciate the work and effort you put into them.

I STAYED. I have 13 beardies. I've never seen any of them pee with no poop. A few of them do tend to have runny poop. You're saying this means they need more protein, so I'll feed more bugs and see how that works. Also, my reptile vet cautioned against fruit. He says their digestive systems aren't able to digest fruit properly. I still give a few small blueberries occasionally. They like them. I figure they provide moisture and antioxidants, and a few won't hurt.

it could if they always have runny poop and no parasites are found. they can digest fruit, but fruit has sugar so should be a treat but low sugar fruit is ok.

I STAYED. would this method of how much they want 1x a week (for an adult bearded dragon) be applicable to a bearded dragon who has had kidney issues? my vet has advised me to significantly decrease my bearded dragon’s protein intake, but as a result she has also lost quite a bit of muscle mass. I don’t want to put strain on her kidneys but I also don’t want to cause muscle atrophy. any advice?

I know for the purpose of the video, it was easier to feed them using tongs, but do you ever just put the bugs down and let them hunt? I think it's great for them to be allowed to do that to try and emulate a little bit more those natural instincts that they'd have in the wild rather than just being fed themselves.

Ugh, I hate body mass index, I don't think it's a good way to measure a healthy body size as it doesn't take into account ANY variation of atypical body structure from the 'base' that the scale was made from - for example - Mongo wouldn't fit the base for beardy's healthy size though he is, especially if it's taken from wild specimens! they are going to be leaner just due to parasite load alone, let a alone their diet and the fact the y actually do have to hunt & chase for their food I would guess the wild dragons would be overall a leaner and mor muscular animal and a bit smaller...as some people are breeding to get a good size as much as color. That as well as the feeding of consistent optimized diet, nutrients, and lighting!!! yeah, they aren't going to be anyhwere near the same size as wild animals....this is also why I think people also NEED to consider helping their egg clutches with peeping in a timely manner because we've given mom way more calcium than she would ever have gotten in nature to make those egg shells really hard... possibly too hard for the babies little egg tooth in some case and if they don't appear to be making progress in a timely manner they may need help due to all the great care we take to make sure mom has all the extra calcium she wants and then some while she was making those eggs...The nutrition we give them has carry-on effects that people don't always think of down the road, just like the reason adult dragons only need ONE BUG DAY A WEEK is to protect their liver long term so they can live a long healthy life without fat liver disease( which is a horrible disease/death) any way I've blabbed on too long sorry... thanks for all you do as always & take care!!!! I stayed - because I was shocked to hear the information you provided. Maybe you should look through the vet journals and see the presenting medical issues due to overfeeding - especially with invert feedings. I was with you initially when you indicated once per week feed day - but then witnessing you feed as many as the first beardie could eat - not necessary, nor good advice to your audience.

Hi I have read a lot, I couldn't find anything that did research on potentially feeding too much of anything for 1 feeding etc. They all pointed to feeding way too much (yes mostly fatty food bugs etc) multiple times a week.
