How Many Return Lines Should A Pool Have?

From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... - Swimming pools need a minimum of one return line in order to function; ideally though, they have three or four return lines. But how many return lines and return jets (or return ports) a pool needs depends a lot on the size and shape of the pool.
For optimal skimming effect (removal of floating debris) and diffusion of the filtered and chemically treated water returning to the swimming pool, having multiple return jets in the right locations helps to both aim the flow of water towards the skimmer mouth for debris collection and removal as well as dispersing the treated water more evenly throughout the pool.
Swimming pools with unique shapes may need more consideration of the number of return lines as well as the placement of them to avoid any dead zones where debris collects from lack of water flow pushing it towards the filtration system.

I have an above ground 15k gal. Pool with 1 return that's mounted 2ft. from the skimmer. Yes, the far end is where the alge grows and where all the debris settles. Also, Pink alge grows under my ladder, I'm now basically chemical free after switching to a copper/silver ionization system which worked great last year, this year I planned to add 1 more jet but after watching this vid I plan to add 3 and 1 will be behind the ladder for circulation. Thank you for the great advice.

I have a rectangular pool wish I knew better and installed a 4th return. I get mustard algae on my sun shelf. I’d aim a return right on the shelf to minimize growth. Thanks Steve.

My inground pool has a skimmer and a return. Yep, it's a rectangular pool. That's all it has, and so far, so good. It's one of those old Dream Pools. It was here when I bought the house and I've been here for almost 26 years.

I didn’t hear you mention floor returns! I love putting them in, heat from the bottom and just transparent (to the end user) circulation.

We have an older pool with one return and one skimmer. It’s a 16 x 32 from the 70s. Odd they didn’t add more back then when everything was dug out.

Worth noting that in our hemisphere water would vortex in a counter clockwise motion so aiming the jets in that orientation versus against it is helpful.

Do me a favour...look at the intex ultra 18x9. How should i alter this set up? Im thinking a skimmer in place of the far inlet and adding a return .but lower than the one that is there factory set

Question, I wanted to add directional returns to my pool but unfortunately my returns are straight PVC. There are 3 returns. 2 are straight pvc and 1 is for a robot which is threaded but got would I install a directional return to the unthreaded ones? Hopefully that wasn't too confusing.

Thanks for your advise We have 20x10x1,5 swimming pool, is that ok to use 8 inlet? If yes then all must be to the opposite of skimmer/outlet?

Hi, your video was helpful especially the one for the skimmer. When you have a pool of 6m x 10m, 2No skimmer will be required and how many nozzle will be required. Also how can i position them (both skimmer and nozzle).

I know you said it's ideal to have one in each corner but what's your thoughts of let's say 4 returns all on the same wall opposite the Skimmer ? 44' long rectangle

Steve, thanks for the videos. I've learned so much from you. I have an idea for a video, returns jet nozzles come in different sizes, what's best and what's the best placement. For example; I have a lazy L pool with 1.5" pipes and 4 returns. The return closest to the pump is the strongest flow; should it have a 3/4" opening or 1/2" opening or what? As you move away from the pump; should those nozzles be the same size or larger/smaller? Obviously you're trying to get the water to rotate in one direction and my pool opening is tomorrow and I have a box of returns of different sizes so how will my pool guy know which nozzle goes where? Also, my Dolphin keeps redirecting the pool nozzles as it cleans the walls, so is there a better choice for nozzles? I tried tightening them and that Dolphin still turns them. You're AWESOME!!!

Go with 1/2" all around and see if that works for you. Look into flush eyeballs as well, better for the cleaner mishaps

HELP! I just got my inground pool re-plastered. But the good "vortex" (circular) water motion I had previously for many years is gone. The return jets just point straight out now, like you see in spas. No more "vortex" water motion. Is this OK?

You can change the direction. The half circle thing with the hole in it that the water comes out of should swivel in the housing. They bind up after a while so you might have to unscrew it.

Man I hate my in-floor system which also acts as a return for my pool. Killing it is going to require me to do a minimum of 2 return lines. What is your take on the in-floor pop-up system?

Would a vortex cause debris to sit in the center? VSPs have helped with not blowing debris past the skimmer

Debris doesn’t accumulate in the center of the vortex because there’s always some wind moving it to the periphery. In a rectangular pool the tendency is actually for debris to accumulate in the corners (which corner usually depends on wind direction). His use of “vortex” is a misleading term for what’s simply circular surface circulation
