I'm a Canadian vegan and I'm noticing everyone around me is going vegetarian or plant based. Things are looking up.

I'm a Chinese who lives in Canada and I went vegan one year a go. I used to think China doesn't have any vegan because when I type in the translated word for vegan on our searching site nothing pops up. But recently I sort of found a vegan community there. I guess veganism is still mostly brought by people come from abroad, which is good. Because most Buddhists in China are vegetarians because they don't realize dairy and egg industry or other industries do harm animals. And as far as I know, it is more of a diet choice of not harming animals, I don't think people had thought of other products that also contribute to animal harming. Don't worry the vegan population will rise in the future because we are putting in our efforts :)

The number of vegan reataurants in the USA is lower than Shawn Baker's testosterone level, its frustrating.

The vegan community has grown in Jamaica especially in the yoga community . The word vegan or veganism is a new term for us, but actually not the lifestyle as the Rastafarian community *which is a huge part of the Jamaican culture* dated all the way back to the 1930's live this type of lifestyle which they called termed "Ital." Mostly the younger generation is on top of veganism here. Most of the vegan/ital restaurants and stores here are owned by Rastafarians. I have been vegan for 2 years and probably the only one in my family.

I'm from Algeria and I know of 3 vegans myself included. Youpiii we're a growing population . Although, it would be great to have rigourous studies around the veganism

brazilian vegan! there is an upscaling demand for vegan products where I live, so more and more restaurants, street markets, organic shops, also blogs and youtube channels popping up.. that's how I educated myself to make my decision. Mic your content is just excellent, keep up the good work!!

Vegan from Germany here,an I've noticed a massive increase in vegan options over the last 3 years.As I went vegan,the typical supermarket would at maximum offer unflavoured soy milk,and that's it.Nowadays,we have a lot bigger choice of food,wich is great but also really interferes with my weight loss plans.(Thanks, Ben & Jerry's!)

India has many vegetarians ( no meat consumption, including eggs and fish), everyone has milk, but there are hardly any vegans..

Rural American vegan here. We are rare here, but I hear rumors that there is a vegetarian one county over. And through the magic of Facebook I have met a vegan a few counties over. Oh and I know a vegan seventh day Adventist three counties up.

So, I live in Germany and im sure everyone knows the word "Vegan". But sadly a lot of people think we are Vegeterians and dont know the diffrence. When I was in Italy (Bologna) everywhere like EVERYWHERE where I was, I saw vegan stuff in Stores and in every restaurant I went to, there were atleast 5 Vegan dishes. Holy shit, Italy!!

Swedish vegan here! :D If it helps, one of the biggest Facebook groups for vegans in Sweden currently has roughly 45,000 members!

I lived in Israel for many years and there are SO MANY vegans or vegan curious people. What's most interesting to me is how there are vegans from so many different backgrounds, super orthodox vegans, secular vegans, hipster vegans, big city, rural, right wing, left wing, "old", young, there's a lot of variety. In fact veganism is so popular and accepted that the military is required to cater to vegans by law. Its not just the law either, In practice the military is great to vegans, my best friend was vegan during her service and they gave her money to buy and bring her own vegan food and provided her with canvas boots so she didn't have to wear leather. Also because of kashrut (kosher laws) it's pretty easy to eat vegan in non-vegan restaurants since dairy and meat are kept separate from each other and there are very strict rules to prevent cross-contamination of other foods. Israel is a vegan paradise, not only is the food amazing and often vegan or easily veganized but most people understand what veganism is and there isn't as much definitiveness or hostility towards vegans. I live in France now and it's a bit more complicated to be vegan here, we don't have as many awesome options in the grocery stores or in restaurants. In Paris there are some really nice vegan restaurants but they are a bit pricey and eating vegan at a non-vegan place can be a lot harder here. Even eating vegan at home is more of a challenge here, most meat replacement foods have egg or dairy in it (why!?! Why!!) and the produce isn't as plentiful, vaired, fresh or affordable. Gripes aside, I have definitely seen veganism becoming more mainstream here over the last 5 years though and more options becoming available which is really nice. Edited to add: the numbers you mentioned for Israel seemed extremely low. Also we don't use the word vegan in Hebrew so the Google analytics thing didn't yeild the best results. The word for vegan in Hebrew is" טבעוני" which literally means something like "a person of nature" or "natural people".

I have never been asked!!! I am vegan from Russia! I have many vegan friends here from different cities and NONE of them participated in any surveys..... I can hardly believe than someone would lie about him or her being vegan so the conclusion is: there are more vegans than the numbers say!

Canadian vegan here. Two issues here are produce prices and perceptions. A head of cauliflower in my local store is $6.00. Three fronds of kale is $4.00. Eating non processed plant food is very expensive. The other issue is the definition of vegan. Many Canadians who eat a vegan diet 99 percent of the time but will eat Christmas dinner at Granny's house without preaching the vegan dogma are told that they are not vegan even if they don't eat the turkey but do eat the stuffing and the candied yams. For this reason, many people that eat a plant based diet do not consider themselves vegan since saying that one is vegan brings about instant judgement from both sides. Also, due to produce prices I would guess that there are fewer vegans in Canada than in the US.

In the Netherlands we're at about 100.000 or more vegans now. I asked the Dutch Society for Veganism and they came up with that number. According to my own calculations, we're at about 130.000 vegans. But the number definitely more than doubled over the last few years.

I'm from Sweden and I think it's around 2.5-3% or maybe even 4% that are vegan in Sweden. We don't have any large studies on it sadly. There's one study on 1000 people that say that 3% are vegan and 8% are vegetarian. It was done in all kinds of cities and through all kinds of cities. This was done in 2016 and since then it feels like the vegan lifestyle has increased in popularity a lot. Everyone knows what vegan is now and talks about it. There are new brands and products that come out here every week. It's really fun to see :) oh and meat consumption has dropped for the first time since the 90's this year :)

All I can say to the low stats is stay strong. Follow your own path -- arguably the hardest part of being on the leading edge of change is to keep going in the face of social pressure to conform. I think the #1 reason people stop being vegan would be the desire to fit in (which is a powerful force in human psyche)

Israel had the largest animal rights march in history. Also, Tel Aviv is usually voted the most vegan friendly city in the world.

In Romania, being a very Orthodox country, religious people are fasting for about 15 weeks per year and almost every Wednesday and Friday. But they would never consider veganism. After 7 weeks of not eating meat, eggs and dairy, unfortunately they have no problem in slaughtering lambs for Easter and having large quantities of animal products that makes them seek. And the saddest thing is that the church encourages this. It's like there is an exception to the command " you should not kill.......humans, no problem with animals." Luckily there is a slight increase in vegans in the younger population, hopefully we will be getting on the right track.

Been Vegan for about a year and a couple of months now.

I don’t know how many vegans we have in Sweden but we are growing! As the meat and dairy substitutes become more available and of better quality more meat eaters gravitate towards it and we also have pretty huge fairs every year called Vegovision that showcase all new vegan products and books from that year. We also have many activists and the vegans are spread across the whole nation, though there are more in the south. So it feels like that number should be correct but it’s hard to tell! :)

Vegan from Sweden here! I think the numbers are accurate, a lot of people are vegan here. I think it may be even higher now since these numbers are from 2014. Many swedish youtubers/influencers promote veganism wich is great! (I only include vegan diets here, there are much much fewer ”real vegans” i think.)

Vegan here from Australia and must say sadly that no one that I know (Family & Friends) are vegan. Though the World Vegan Day they have here in Melbourne has been packed the few times I have attended.

I'm Mexican and vegan, some people find that surprising because of our culture but I have hope for the future. My boyfriend is Honduran and he's also vegan. I live in Chicago and there's a really good Mexican vegan restaurant owned by a family friend :)

Hey back at ya from Finland! I've been vegan for about five years. During that time I've seen few friends or family go plant-based, but I think that a lot of younger people are doing it. The most significant change is that stores carry an ever growing selection of vegan options. Sadly, most of those options are still junk food, e.g. highly processed ice creams, burgers and pizzas... Still, it gives me a little hope. I think studying actual consumption is more useful than trying to get accurate surveys, etc. Keep up the good Work, Mic.!

Was vegetarian for several years until I eliminated the eggs and dairy for lent two years back. I decided to stick with it past Easter as in that time my perception has changed and eating animals products now just feels.... Wrong. I'm from Hungary and I don't know anybody who's vegan, not to say there aren't any people, I have just never met them. In my city there are absolutely no vegan restaurants, not even vegetarian. Here, you have pizza, burger and gyros everywhere if you go out to eat. Sometimes you find salads in restaurants, with chicken or bacon on top of course cause why would you possibly want to eat a salad without meat?

Great Video. My whole family is vegan, too. It’s really good to see that veganism is becoming more popular. It’s too bad that there isn’t more data on the number of vegans. I don’t think Google statistics are that reliable for finding the answer to that question, though (besides using it to find an estimate and find trends).
