here are a few more food hacks: - adding a source of fat (even just one walnut) to a meal seems to boost bioavailability. - sun exposure after eating greens seems to produce/repair coenzyme q10, which acts as an antioxidant (source: dr. greger's book "how not to die"). - eating fruit with or soon after a sugary meal seems to help regulate the glucose spike that would normally follow sugar intake. - breaking up a raw cruciferous vegetable (by chewing, chopping, blending or similar) will create sulforaphane, an anti-carcinogenic compound that also boosts the liver’s detoxifying enzymes. in the case of cooked cruciferous, u can create sulforaphane by adding broken-up raw cruciferous to it. ^ more info on the sulforaphane hack: (1) frozen cruciferous normally counts as cooked, as it is commercially flash-cooked before being frozen; (2) it seems that the more u break up the cruciferous, the sooner sulforaphane formation is quantitatively maximized. for example, in the case of roughly-chopped raw cruciferous, letting it sit chopped for at least 40 minutes before eating it seems to be the time required for maximum sulforaphane production. instead, adding a pinch of powdered raw cruciferous (like mustard powder or powdered mustard seeds) to ur cruciferous portion seems to instantly maximize sulforaphane formation; (3) sulforaphane is heat resistant so, once formed, the cruciferous vegetable can be cooked without any loss of sulforaphane; (4) broccoli seems to be the vegetable that can produce the most sulforaphane; (5) sources: dr. greger’s book “how not to die” and this video of his kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gpeVqKdiupjUeGw.html.

Mic you’re spot on about the lack of iron being slightly higher in Black and Mexican women. I read a study that spoke about that too several months ago which is why I started taking my iron with OJ. My iron levels have improved greatly vs me taking it without OJ.

I’ve had iron deficient anemia for about 10 years and it’s not that I don’t consume enough iron, it’s more that the protein that transfers iron is in low numbers. I eat mostly plant based and take a liquid vegan iron supplement a couple times a week. Much better than FeSO4 pills. But yes iron deficiency is a real issue, and usually doctors tell me to eat rare meat... no thanks. Thanks for pointing out that vit C helps. Also remember Ca inhibits absorption.

What I meant to say was that myself as a Black woman agreed with his message regarding the lack of iron that Black and Mexican women tend to suffer from and how drinking something as simple as orange juice while taking an iron supplement helped me increase my iron levels.

Mic, sir. I just wanted to thank you. I'm a new vegan (it's been about 3 weeks now) and I appreciate your videos so much. I listen to them when I go out on walks. That or my nutritional science podcasts. I've been driven to this lifestyle due to many different health issues and you've really helped ease any anxieties I had about my diet change. Thankfully I was already eating a whole foods diet prior to finally dropping the animal protein so my transition was a buttery smooth one (whoops, pun kind of intended) but your videos have really expanded upon the nutritional knowledge that I had prior. I really only had half of the picture. Over the last two years, I have brought my body down from 302lbs to 186lbs and this has been one hell of a journey. I really feel well eating a whole foods vegan diet and I can't wait to see how much healthier and stronger I get as the years go on. Vegan for life, man. Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels.

I like your excellent information because it is science based. One thing to note is potatoes have vitamin C, and I didn't know it until I was tracking my nutrients and eating lots of them. I don't eat them everyday, though, but they are good for potassium. Potassium is one thing I have to watch because I don't prefer beans and potatoes as much as my bread, oatmeal, and whole wheat pasta. They aren't bad, mind you, just I love my bread. :) After 17 months on whole food-plant based, I got another blood test and it can be seen on Imgur by searching "Blood test results on whole food-plant based diet for 16 months". Sorry it's got typos and mistakes in my narrative but all 3 pages of the report are there. I went on the diet to lower my cholesterol. Total went from 190 to 118, effectively heart attack proof. LDL went from 130 to 65. This mostly happened in the first 4 weeks but continues now. My D is low, and there is a question whether D pills actually work, and if we need sun for it, so I'll take the pills but focus on getting sun a lot more. All other figures were close enough to the normal range not to really matter. I'm so happy! Yay Dr. John Mcdougall for Starch Solution.

Lemon balm is really easy to grow either in the garden or a large pot, it likes a fair amount of water, like most mints, and dappled sunlight. If you add a bit of ginger to the tea, it ups the protection. It's tasty in salads, good to take it a couple days before and after dental x-rays. Thx for another fun and informative vid! Good stuff! 🌱

I just starting growing it this year-- it's really easy. I have mint too, but I far prefer the milder, fruitier taste of lemon balm. Teas, salads, salad dressing, soups, etc. Normal mint just seems too strong for a broad range of uses.

I love this video. It definitely inspired me to add pepper and turmeric to my morning coffee. (My doctor-prescribed iron pill already comes with Vitamin C. I take it in the evening to avoid having it near my turmeric-filled coffee and now also try to remember to take it with a fruit or vegetable high in Vitamin C.)

Great video. I didnt know that about cauliflower, i always add bell pepper to my greens. I eat high raw so use salad/spring onion in salads with a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds to boost zinc. Amla is sooooo cheap here in the uk too, Ive become an amla powder dealer buying it for everyone i know. It doesnt taste horrid at all Mic, you just need 1/4 tsp and mix it in ANYTHING my partner doesnt notice it at all in rice or baked beans. I put it in fruit sauces or in my thini salad dressing :) :) I hope science teaches us more aweome absorbing combos

Hi raw lion, I live in the uk too, can you tell me what brand you get that is OK to eat? I assume you get it on Amazon? I ask because I've only ever bought it to use in a mixture to wash your hair with and wonder if I have to get a certain one safe for eating?

Mary McAndrew Hi Mary, I but it from Asian grocery stores. Do you live in a city? I buy mine in Manchester and have seen it in various asian grocers and Ive seen London youtubers get it the same way. Iknow what you mean about hair products. You need to look in the herb and spice sections, they come in small bags just like other spices and usually costs under a pound for a bag.

Amla is super sour. I remember growing up my mom always kept some at home and some actually enjoyed it as a snack.😂 one thing is if you drink water after eating a fresh amla the water taste sweeeet. Like really sweet.
