Did you know there is a feature in modern Bibles that is only a few centuries old that has the potential to distort the meaning of God’s word?

This is what I try to teach my Sunday school students. The devil is able to quote Scripture, but he invariably takes it out of context.
@anthonypuccetti8779
@anthonypuccetti8779 2 жыл бұрын
Taking scripture out of context doesn't necessarily involve misunderstanding. Jesus and the authors of the new testament and many other saints and popes took sayings of scripture out of context to make points. The devil in scripture quoted scripture only once, and he didn't misinterpret it, he was wrong for tempting Christ. Any quote of a sentence is out of context. The context of a saying isn't always helpful. There are many sayings that are immediately surrounded by words about different things or which are veiled in meaning and easily misunderstood. The context that always helps is Church doctrine and tradition.

This is brilliant. I'm an Anglican whose looking to convert as soon as RCIA classes resume at my local church. Just because someone can quote the Bible, doesn't necessarily mean they understand it. Using chapter and verse is useful as an index but is too often used, especially in protestant circles, to say 'l know more than you!'. 🙄. Great video Trent 👌🙏

I was a lifelong Anglican myself. I converted 11 years ago. It was absolutely, without equal the most monumental event in my life. If I may, I’d offer a word of advice. Buy a nice Rosary and start memorizing the prayers (most you already know, some will be new, i.e. Hail Holy Queen) and then start praying the Rosary every day, on your way to work or on a run or walking the dog. That one thing, though it might appear mundane or repetitive, will deeply impact your life. Also, keep a journal as this develops because you will witness miracles (we all do!) as God unfolds this world before you and you will want to refer back to this very special time. Good luck on your journey! Exciting times! God Bless!!

sometimes i feel bad for not being able to memorize every chapter and verse, but i think what matters first and foremost is that you understand the contents of each book and are able to tell the stories within the books to other people and get the key points across, the specific chapter and verse is always something one can look up, but its important to comprehend the text all together. sometimes Catholics get teased or even made fun of for not memorizing Scripture, but actually understanding and properly interpreting Scripture is by far more important than having it memorized in my opinion...its a weird thing to make fun of another Christian for. but if you really wish to memorize parts to be able to quote faster, then remembering the contents by chapter is easiest. it's like with math, sure you can memorize formulas, but memorizing a formula doesn't mean you actually understand what the formula is saying, it's better to be able to recognize a formula and know what it fully means than to mindlessly memorize them

That’s always been my thought process as well. I love to read and can plow through books in a week if I have the time. Chapter numbers are good as a place holder, but in the end they are just there as a literary assistance to break up the text. Same concept with paragraphs. Useful tools, but only if they help enhance the material being written and read.
@turkey3gwiddle

This makes me think of 1 Corinthians 1:20-21; 26-27 (which I do not have memorized but had to look up): Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith. [...] Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something. ^^St. Paul is definitely talking about, as one can interpret it, the foolish (and noble in God's eyes) love of Christ and His cross, foolish and ridiculous as the world sees it, but our life and salvation as we see it, and how those who embrace the cross are wiser than all those who are learned and studied many books and have lots of knowledge but reject it. If you think of it in a broader context, though, a little child who says "I love God. Jesus saves me by dying for me and rising." This child has greater wisdom than an agnostic scholar who knows the Bible up and down verse for verse. I have heard that Jewish boys would have all of Torah memorized when they reached a certain age, yet it is evident how many Jews who were experts did not come to know the truth by their pure knowledge. St. Paul is a great example of this, being a leading Pharisee himself. He was so well-versed in the Judaic tradition and scriptures, but he did not come to know Christ by that raw wisdom. Rather, it was by God's grace, which did not reveal to him any new texts (as he already has them all memorized), but gave him a new authentic understanding of how they are all fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Then he put aside his old wisdom for his new foolishness. In argumentation there is an "ethos" argument, which is one from authority. When people quote scripture and verses off their head, I know it is intimidating, but we can't let that make us ever feel as if we lack something we need, as God has provided all we need. It's good to keep the words of St. Paul in our heads: "God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise". And that doesn't mean those who do quote scripture don't understand it - they very well might.
@Idddddk
@Idddddk 3 жыл бұрын
@@turkey3gwiddle yes!! i love this, and i didnt mean to say those who can quote scripture dont understand it, i meant it in the context of people who take things out of context and misinterpret the things they know by memory, and then use this ability to quote scripture to put people in a corner in a debate (im sure you know what i mean) it is true, in ancient judaism (and still today in orthodox judaism) boys had to study scripture extensively for their whole lives, they would end up knowing it back to front, but even with all of their knowledge many rejected Jesus, while other wise people (like nicodemus & the High Priest who circumcised Jesus) were able to recognize Christ in front of them because of God's grace and accepting this grace, one can either use the wisdom given to them for good or for bad, sadly many choose to invest their wisdom in futile things
@turkey3gwiddle
@turkey3gwiddle 3 жыл бұрын
@@Idddddk I was not aware that Orthodox Judaism has that same rigidity of study today! Interesting. And I know that you did not mean that those who quote scripture don't understand it - I was just mentioning it for the sake of reminding anyone reading. I know what you mean about being put in a corner by it, though. Even though I'm not often enough in any scriptural debate to have been in that situation, I know exactly what you mean. A similar thing can come across to me from another because I have not read the whole Bible, so if I was in a debate with someone, someone might say "You haven't even read the entire Bible" and therefore discredit all I am saying. But the risky logic there is that the truth of what one is saying is determined by the status of the one speaking the words, rather than the relationship of the meaning of the words themselves to reality. I think Nicodemus is a great example! Not sure if you watch The Chosen, but I found how they expanded on Nicodemus quite interesting in that.

@Sage of Synergism Consider applying that verse to young children. Can they sin even if they can’t reason? Of course not, but they are born with a sinful nature by a lack of sanctifying grace. This means there can be exceptions, including Jesus and Mary. Mary was born with the sanctifying grace necessary to avoid sin, which is strongly suggested by the angel Gabriel’s greeting to her “Hail, full of grace” translated from the Greek “Kecharitomene” meaning she was graced in the past but then presently contained that same grace.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:03 📖 Chapters and verses are not original parts of the Bible, but later additions that can sometimes obscure the original meaning of the text. 01:14 🧩 Catholics and Protestants have different approaches to knowing the Bible; chapters and verses are like markers for finding specific passages. 02:08 📜 Early versions of the Bible didn't have chapters and verses; these divisions were introduced in the 13th century and later. 05:24 📖 Modern chapter divisions don't always align with the author's intent; for instance, the Gospel of Matthew is divided into five major parts, not 28 chapters. 06:47 📖 Genesis 2:1-3 and other divisions can create confusing chapter breaks that disrupt the narrative flow. 07:31 📚 Chapters and verses are useful for referencing and reading plans, but they shouldn't overshadow the organic flow of the text. 08:54 📚 Understanding context across chapter divisions is essential for grasping the full meaning of passages, such as the Communion of Saints. 11:00 🕊️ Careful reading is required to recognize connections between chapters, like Revelation 11 and 12 linking the Ark of the Covenant to Mary. 13:21 📖 The placement of headings can disrupt the logical flow of text, affecting the understanding of topics like Peter's role and papal authority. 17:05 📖 Chapters and verses can encourage proof texting, but they also aid navigation and motivation for consistent Bible reading.

@Sage of Synergism When it comes to sola scriptura, doctrines change every year because everyone is interpreting the bible for themselves rather than with the authority and guidance that Jesus has given to the church. Not only that but the doctrine is self defeating since it can't be found in scripture.

Also, with the memorized *content* of a Bible verse, we can nowadays easily find the book, chapter and verse, simply by using a search engine. It's good to have it as a reference when talking with others, but it doesn't give you extra points in a discussion if you know chapter and verse number by heart.

New English Bible (which was praised by Ven. Fulton Sheen) ameliorates this problem by using a paragraph format and putting chapter and verse markers on the side; if a chapter division is unnatural, sometimes the paragraph division even cuts across two chapters. This helps deal with the problem you're talking about.

Excellent. As a cultural Catholic that left the church and was bible thumping protestant and came back to the Catholic faith, I agree. Protestants pride themselves in knowing the Word; however, they will forget, gloss over scripture that upholds Catholic Dogma and Doctrine. We can learn from our protestant brethren in studying scripture and knowing it. Unfortunately, when I came back to the Catholic faith, many Catholics prided themselves with ignorance of scripture. Its amazing when protestants attack the Catholic faith, and you give a defense for the faith, they don't want to scripture. Also, its importantant to have a Catholic Bible. The Duay Rhiems is the best translation because it comes straight from the Latin Vulgate. If you read it it does match neatly to modern translations. The second best translation is the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition. I am not found of the New American Bible translation. It's a modern, almost protestant version. Also the words of Our Lord are not in red. Stay away from protestant translations." Ignorant of scripture is ignorant of God", St Jerome! Read scripture with the knowledge of Catholic teachings and theology.

I do have a question about the chapter/verse insertion 600-700 years ago: With regard to the daily lectionary, the daily office readings, how was this demarcated prior to the insertion of chapter and verse numbers? It would seem a bit vague to just say "each day read the book of Exodus for five minutes, commencing where you left off yesterday, and when you get through that book begin Leviticus in the same way and so on until you reach the end, then begin again". Or some such. There must have been a way to "dole out" and parcel up the daily readings in a way that churchmen at least could follow, at least the literate ones, and that would enable people in widely flung regions to be "on the same page" liturgically and calendrically in their parish, monastery, convent, friary, or wherever.

Good question. The text does have markings, brother. Each author had its own preference. Remember that we could easily deduce Matthew intended his work to be in five parts. The way they did it was with a leading line in a new paragraph. "And then, later, Jesus said" kinda thing. Exact words and phrasings every few pages. For subdivision they used paragraphs. Double spaced, clear demarcation. The Old Testament had a similar system. You can look into this one online by looking for the name Toledoth. "Open and read the second part, fifth paragraph of the gospel according to Luke" I hope this helped.

IMO Rev 12f interprets Rev 11. 15-19. The Arc of the Covenant was typically brought into battle. Rev 12f depicts the cosmic battle which is summarised in Rev 11. The chapter headings and verse numbers do not necessarily hinder correct interpretation. Typically they seek to capture the existing blocks of thought. e.g. The conjunctions 'then', 'and' and 'now' in the Rev texts quoted. If one reads scripture enough the key words which signify blocks, transitions, flows of thought become more and more apparent. The chapters and verses become less important.

Hello, Mr. Horn. Somebody commented on Universalism and got me curious. Maybe you could make a video about it. I am Reformed in my beliefs but I do listen to Catholics, atheist and people I generally do not agree with. I think it is healthy to understand correctly opposing views. My specific questions is around the current catholic teaching that even people who even rejects Jesus "can" be saved. When I first heard Bishop Barron explain this catholic teaching, it really surprised me and reminded me of "universalism". I know that the Roman catholic church does not teach "universalism". i understand the difference between "will be" and "can be". My question then is what is the role of faith in the salvation of people who rejects Christ and yet "can still be saved". Hope you could make a video about this. I may disagree with you but more power to you. Thank you.

If you reject Jesus, you're not saved. Period. The question is for people that never even got the chance to reject Jesus because they just never got to know who this person was. Anyone that grows and dies without hearing the gospel is, ultimately, due to our own oversight as followers of Jesus Christ. It's our sacred duty to evangelize. Thus, people that kept Jesus in their hearts, even though the name itself completely missed them, _may_ still be saved. We are limited by the Ordinary methods to salvation like baptism... but in the Bible we have the thief on the cross, who wasn't baptized, and Abraham who never heard of Jesus.

It had divisions. Look for toledoth. The chapter system broke it down even further, but is kinda embarrassing. Daniel 6 iirc makes a chapter separation WITHIN a sentence. It's useful but shouldn't be trusted.

Search for readers Bible or Bible without chapter and verse. To fully understand the Bible one needs to know Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic. All translations have the translators understanding/bias in them. Without knowing those previous languages one can use an Interlinear Bible to see why and what words were chosen as a translation for original language.

Different approved Bibles might emphasize different things for better understanding depending on the place and time but it doesn't undermine the spirit of the text. The Latin Vulgate is the official Catholic Bible for all times and ages. The spirit of the Bible can be summed up in a sentence or two. Love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself. What else do you really need?

Chapter and Verse: "It Says Somewhere." HEB 4:1-5, 11, St. Paul writes: “For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh day in this manner….” Somewhere? Did he not know the chapter and verse.? Reading the Church Fathers and the Desert Fathers we meet such phrases as ‘it says somewhere.’ Did they not know the chapters and verses? No, none of the above knew any chapter or verse. Why? Because there were as yet no chapters and verses. The books of the New Testament were written before AD 120 and later made authoritative between the 2nd and 4th century AD. Hence, the older form of the Gospels is the Oral Tradition, which rightly is held equal to the written Tradition. The Church gave us the New Testament, not the other way around. It is not until well into the 2nd century that the four Gospels were titled. Chapters did not appear in the original texts until early in the 13th century, and not until the mid-16th century were verses added.

He went down the Laundry list of Anti-Catholic statements, the majority which have been disproven for over a century, and misquoted Popes and Councils. He did make a few statements that stuck in my mind even today almost 50 years later, first he told his listeners, "Since we know that Catholics are not "saved" we have to trick them into talking to us, and be wolves in sheep's clothing. We have to bombard them with not just scripture, but cite Chapter and verse, because even if they know the scriptures, they get tripped up because they have not memorized the chapters and verses. Give them so many they will not have time to answer or look them up. Then tell them they are not Biblical." He also went on and on about how a celibate clergy was contrary to the Bible, and would make a man sin. Many years later his full story came out. He did not leave the priesthood and Church because it was un-biblical, it turns out that he was expelled because he had a couple very public affairs with underage girls in the Phillipines, and then when returned to the US and they tried to "reform" him, keeping him away from kids, he did it again. He was suspended, (this was pre-Vatican II) and then left the Church, for two years did nothing until a new friend who was SDA heard he was a priest who "left the church" and was recruited by the SDA made a minister with no training in their theology, and sent around to give a "testimony" about the evils of the Church, which is why he just followed the script. Later he was offered more money by a Baptist group to speak for them, so he kept the script and became a Baptist Minister. Funny he never exposed his past history of molestation, when he was giving these talks, and it was only revealed after he died. All they wanted was to have him talk as if the script he read from was the truth, when the real truth about his leaving the Church because it was unblblical was written by someone else.

What lots of people (even pastors) don't (yet) understand. God created us according to His own image and likeness. Godly. Mankind/the first Adam fell. The image of God in man got lost. That's why there is all this predicament on earth (selfishness, greed, lust, wars, sicknesses, death, etc). We are all born into that mess. For the fall of man a perfect atoning sacrifice had to be made.... that is what God did in Christ. With His own once and for all perefect sacrifice, He paid the debt for the fall of man for us, so we can be indwelled by His Spirit again and finally receive the divine life of the ages back, the first Adam let got of in the fall of man. An amazing act of grace and love by our creator. That is what you see happening in Christ's first disciples. They too healed all and walked in unselfish love. And yes.... that is still avaible today. The holy blood is in place, the Holy Spirit is here to give us understanding, power and transform us back to origin. Not to be debated about, but to be embraced and be-come. So: The Kingdom of God already came. Through Christ, in Spiritform, in those that understand. Hence the divine healing miracles we experience. God manifested in Christ to give us back the divine life mankind lost in the fall of Adam. Christ, the exact image of the invisible God. The image we were created after in Gen 1. The image we lost in the fall of man. The image that can be freely restored by Christ's blood and Holy Spirit working IN us. What a plan. What a solution. What a love. What a God. Jesus is amazing. It is the ultimate conclusion of the word and plan of God. God came full circle. He Himself stooped down from glory to restore us back to original created value: Christlikeness. Walking in divine healing power and unselfish love. Jesus, born of the Spirit of God, filled with the spirit of God. The "Son" of God, the incarnated word, God in the flesh. For three years He healed all, raised the dead, casted out demons, controlled nature, spoke pure divine truth. He said: "Follow Me. If you see Me, you see the Father. The Father and I are one. The glory I have IN My Father, I give to you. It pleases the Father to give you His Kingdom/Holy Spirit/divine nature. I will send Holy Spirit, the same as Me, He will be IN you, guide you into truth and give you explosive power. The same miracles i do, you will do too, because you will understand that the Father is IN Me and I am IN you. Freely I give you My Kingdom/Holy Spirit/divine nature, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, freely I give, freely share" Etc, etc, etc. I have experienced thousands of beautifull healing miracles through the power of Holy Spirit IN me already. Broken bones, cancers, covid, all kinds of infirmities healed in seconds. Demons manifesting and casted out by a simple "get out, in Jesus name". Jesus. De name above all names. In Him all power and wisdom is sourced and.... He calls us one with Him. God in man and man in God again. C'mon Jesus!! So.... again: God stooped down IN Christ to restore us back to Gen 1:27 were He said: "Let us make man according to our image and likeness and let them have authority.....": walk as Christ. Christ, the exact image of the invisible God. The image we were created after and being restored to by His atoning blood for the fall of man and indwelling Holy Spirit. You are free to receive this original divine life of the ages by Holy Spirit of Christ/God. Ask Him to guide you into truth. Read the Gospel of John and fall in love with your creator. You are not made for the fall of man and its effects, but for the image/glory of God and to walk like Christ. Holy Spirit is the guide and transforming power that will get you there. Amazing grace. A big leap in faith can be made when we start realizing we are already IN Christ, IN the last Adam. Free from the fall! Loved! Growing into awareness of our new (yet old) godly identity. Changing by Holy Spirit. The most fullfilled life ever. Paul healed all on Malta. He understood and wrote: "As in the first Adam ALL died (lost the divine nature), so also ALL were made alive IN Christ to walk in Zoë (= divine life) again". "IN Christ (the last Adam) we are co-cruisified (dead to the fall and its effects), co-raised (justified/made righteousness, holy, blameless, above reproach), co-seated (one with Him)" "The fullness of deity dwells in Christ and YOU HAVE BEEN MADE COMPLETE IN HIM, who is the head of every principality and power". So.... thank you Jesus! Thank you for redeeming me from the fall of man. Thank you for your Holy Spirit that makes this new (yet old) divine life come alive in me. You are amazing! In the shadow of Peter the sick healed... He understood too and wrote: "By Gods power (Holy Spirit) and knowing Christ, we have become partakers of the divine nature and have escaped the fall of man". The divine life of the ages has been returned to us by Jesus once and for all perfect atoning sacrifice for the debt of the fall of man and His indwelling Holy Spirit in us. Jesus/God is amazing!!! Ask Him to give you revelation and change you to the way it was before the fall of man: Christlikeness. He will do so. For it is written: "the Spirit brings forth after His own kind". "I have come to give you Zoë (divine life) in abundance...."

As for 'desert' imagery, it is not necessarily literal: in the same way when the 'angel departed' (exodoi) from Mary after the conception of Jesus, it represents a sort of 'privation', and in Rev 12, this 'fleeing' into privation invokes the same literary sense. Besides we have a thing called a Concordance today. So I can look up "My God My God why have You forsaken Me~" Psalm 22:1 When you memorize passages your understanding is of those chapters you've read/memorized rather than a wider understanding.... like how God Abhors a pillar but God also included them in His temple. Or how St. Paul quotes Jesus "it is better to give than receive", but Jesus never said it, at least anywhere else in the Bible.( which makes me wonder how St. Paul learned this) I also think reading to a schedule to be a bad idea for several reasons. Just open the thing up and read. If you finish it in a month, a year or several years what's the difference? If you don't want to read - download an audible and listen to it why you cut the grass or work in the garage or drive somewhere or cook or... or ......or .....or ........or .......or ....... Oh- and the headings and titles are also added.

Doesn’t matter how much of the Bible one knows or quotes, Satan knows more scripture and quoted it too (Matthew 4). The problem is whether or not one believes a perfect inerrant Word of God exists today. Since God is still living and he’s the Word, which how he reveals himself (1 Samuel 3:21), then everyone is in subjection to the Bible rather than making the Bible in subjection to their own opinions and interpretations. Genesis 1:1 (44 Letters, 17 Vowels, 27 Consonants, 10 Words) Revelation 22:21 (44 Letters, 17 Vowels, 27 Consonants, 12 Words) point to the author of the book. 1 John 5:7 (88 Letters, 34 Vowels, 54 Consonants, 22 words). Only the King James Bible can produce such phenomena. No manuscript or Bible in any language can compare. Revelation 1:8 King James Version 8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. Romans 5:1 King James Version 5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Just because the Bible references a well known historical fact among the Jews that can be found in the book of Maccabees does not mean that the author of Hebrews believed it to be part of sacred scripture. That has nothing to do with the rationale that makes the deuterocanonicals part of the Bible. @Christos Kyrios *"Reformed Man"* because I used to be a protestant and became a Catholic last year after many years of adhering to different protestant sects. James White, Steven Anderson, Ravi Zachariah, Ray Comfort etc. *I was confused before but now I'm Reformed.* I ask you just one "obscure verse" but you brought up more than one ... Anyways *Let's focus on the Papacy.* The Catholic Church didn't personally interpret the bible as protestant do and created a dogma such as the Papacy, for the Papacy/the visible head was instituted by Christ himself as scripture says. Aside from the Scripture it is also the tradition[non written revelation] of the Church that there is one supreme visible authority of the kingdom of Christ on Earth whose job is to guard the faith, guide the faithful to the right path and avoid from heresies. *Now I challenge you that Papacy was not instituted by Jesus Christ.* 2. You also said: "The praise of an angel turns Mary into the Queen of Heaven, Savior of Men, and the co-mediatrix with Christ..." - *This is a blatant lie.* The Catholic Church infallibly teaches that Jesus Christ alone is the Savior of the world. It's a dogma. Pope Pius IV, Council of Trent, Sess. 25, On Invocation, Veneration and Relics of Saints, and on Sacred Images, ex cathedra: “…the saints, who reign with Christ, offer up their prayers to God for me; and that it is good and useful to invoke them suppliantly and, in order to obtain favors from God through His Son *JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD, WHO ALONE IS OUR REDEEMER and Savior…* But if anyone should teach or maintain anything contrary to these decrees, let him be anathema.” (Denz. 984-987) This co-mediatrix thing is misunderstood by many [It's also not a dogma]. Only Christ alone is the Saviour, the Blessed Virgin can help us be brought to her divine Son through her intercession if we consecrate ourselves to her[following God's commandments and her virtues] ask her genuinely.

We don't worship her. But we ask her to pray for us sinners. It's an act of humility in front of God almighty. For we, sinners, are not worthy to ask anything from God. You're not a righteous person, aren't you? But the Blessed Virgin is a righteous person. What the Holy Scripture says? *"...the continual prayer of a just man availeth much."* [James 5:16] If the prayer of the righteous man availeth much, how much more the prayer of the Mother of God? God use instrumentalities to bring many sheep as possible to his sheepfold. We don't worship the instrument but the one who created the instrument[s]. There are four main characters in the chapter: “the woman,” the devil, Jesus, and the Archangel Michael. No one denies that the other three mentioned are real persons. It fits the context exegetically to interpret ‘the woman’ as a person (Mary) as well. The Catholic position is more consistent. To say they all represent one actual somebody BUT the woman is illogical. It’s not a hard stretch. Mary is a trigger word for some Christians. So it has to be anything BUT Mary. In any case, the supposed perspicuity of scripture protestants like to talk about is an obvious contradiction when the minimum that an English speaker requires to understand the passage on their own is knowledge of the vocabulary and their idiosyncratic use in 2 dead languages.
