It's true the English word pope is not in the Bible. A similar case is made by Jehovah's Witnesses about the Trinity. Although the word Trinity is not in the Bible, it is a biblical concept. I believe the same can be said about the office of pope, without the word 'pope'. a-Bishop is a biblical office. b-The pope is the bishop of Rome. c-Peter has always been historically understood to be the first bishop of Rome. d-The Bishops of Rome (whether from the Eastern, or Western lens of history) were always understood to have a historical primacy/precedence among the word's bishops, just as Peter is shown a form of primacy in various places in the Bible. e-Bishops of Rome, ie popes, have always been historically understood to be the successors of the apostles, and thus the popes would be the successor of saint Peter. We do not worship the pope, and the pope is a sinner who confesses his sins just like you and me. 2) - You say a sacerdotal priesthood is not mentioned.. I find your point of view unbiblical, actually. a- "Obey those who have the rule over you and submit yourselves, for they keep watch over your souls as ones who must give an account, that they may do it with joy and not with grief, for that is unprofitable for you." (Hebrews 13:17) b- Jesus said to the apostles, "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:23) c- Jesus said to the apostles, "He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” (Luke 10:16) d- The apostles (and as has always been historically understood, their successors, ie the bishops) operated in the Person of Christ (Latin, In Persona Christ) to forgive sins. Paul wrote "To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ" (2nd Corinthians 2:10). e- Finally, James writes, "My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment." This is a subtle to point to make, though implicit in James' statement is that there are those with authority to teach in the Church, and those without. Not to mention that we derive our English "priest" from the Germanic word for 'presbyter' (go to google translate and translate 'priest' into German - then translate 'presbyter' into German. You will find they are the same word. And 'presbyter' is definitely a biblical office, along with bishop and deacon. 3) - About subordinating oneself to the pope, again we do not worship the pope, and grovel at his feet. There are/were faithful Christians, then and now, (beginning with Paul) who have had the boldness to stand up the pope when they were not exercising their office in a godly way (again, infallibility is not impeccability, but I don't want to start a whole separate conversation). The point of 'submitting to the pope' is submitting to what Christ gave us as a visible form of authority until He comes again. A non-Christian may say to you, >>"Are you going to submit to some words on a page?" But if you believe these words are divinely preserved by God, then it's a different discussion. Similarly, submitting to pastor Bob on his own authority is heinous, yes -- but if Peter and his successors received a special grace from God to lead and guide the Church in truth, keeping it free from the stain of error in it's official teachings - - - -Matthew 16:18 (compare with Isaiah 22:21-23) -Luke 22:31-32 -John 21:15-17 -1st Timothy 5:17 -1st Timothy 3:15 - - - then again, submitting to this authority is a different discussion. So while the several *tens of thousands* of Protestant denominations continue to fall by the wayside in terms of doctrines like: -- -contraception -divorce -remarriage -abortion -gay marriage -female clergy -gay clergy -the doctrine of hell -the Virgin Birth -The Infallibility of Scripture -The Infallibility of Christ's Nature/Character/Teachings -The bodily Resurrection of Christ -The Bodily Resurrection at the end of days -The exclusivity of salvation in Christ -The literal belief in a literal God (no, this is not a joke - some Christian denominations do not mandate that their flocks actually believe that God is real, and teach ambiguously on God's actual existence from the pulpit.) -- and can't seem to agree on a single doctrine other than that a), Rome is wrong, and b), 66 out of the 73 books that Rome gave them are right, I will try my best to remain faithful to the One, Holy, Universal (which is to say, Catholic) and apostolic Church which Christ founded. I came back later and they said I was "bragging about my sin when it was clearly explained in the video". Two days later I get called out as "Oh its you again, you are just a pervert here to sow discord" When they have NO clue who I am, how learned or earnest I am in seeing if there is truth in catholicism. THAT is why there are protestants even if we are all going to hell. It's my opinion that being catholic requires such understanding no-one would pursue it in modern times were they not serious. Really put me off engaging any further as in joining the church or anything like that. Im sure im not the only person with similar or worse experiences.

If a plain-text reading was all that it took to arrive at Catholicism, there would be no need to hold either the magisterium or traditions of the fathers as authoritative, as the Roman Catholic Church does. You definitely can’t read something like Matthew 16 and be certain that your modern Catholic interpretation is correct, at least not without disagreeing with multiple early church fathers. Ultimately you need to either hold to the Catholic position that they / the Pope has been given the authority to interpret scripture or the Protestant position that the Bible is clear enough that a plain-text reading is enough to derive the truth on your own - you can’t have it both ways.

@Eucharist Angel Well, you clearly need the "acorn" argument drilled into your head when you bring up nuns and such. There has never been contradictory changes in the Catholic Church. New doctrines, yes. There are things that could change because of the people and times changing (death penalty).

@@felixcharles9773 When you read the whole bible cover to cover before being indoctrinated by any denomination, it's easy to see Catholicism once you find out about Catholicism. Catholicism is more that Mat 16. It's the whole Catechism. No other denomination fits in the bible. You need to rewrite the bible to make Protestant denominations fit, which is what they do. They rewrite the bible.

I don't find anything wrong with it perse, but I think non-Catholics are simply uncomfortable at the idea of confessing to a person instead of directly to God through prayer.

@@InitialPC I would agree with that thought except that so many non-Catholics go to therapists and confess all sorts of stuff. I'm not ignorant to the idea that the elements involved are far beyond my understanding, but I know there is a particular aversion to confessing to a priest, even when we explain we are confessing to God and God is granting us forgiveness through the priest.
