So does the gag that after all they go through during the film, they just end up back again against the rude French Knight who throws insults at them. One flaw I'd give this video however is Monty Python wasn't the first to do this mixture of Satire and Absurd, it was the Goon Show with Spike Miligan, Harry Secombe; Peter Sellers (Yes of Dr Strangelove and Pink Panther fame) and Michael Bentine which set the template for Python 15 years before the Python's became Python.

@@danielebowman The Python were greatly influenced by the Goon Show. John Cleese put great emphasis in his autobiograhy on how much he learned form Sellers as he worked with him on TV comedy (or is it radio i don't remember). I think what you may be looking for is that they were very disciplined and would rehearse thoroughly. It seems spontaneous because they spent months writing and re-writing every season of the TV show, arranging skits in order, figuring out the through-lines and recurring gags, etc. The movies each took years to write, with whole plots thrown out and rewritten. In other words, it seems spontaneous because they practiced so much.

It's very difficult to write good comedy these days, for fear of offending overly sensitive folk who believe themselves to be so "special" that the rest of the population must acknowledge their feelings at all times. However, with that said, there's a play available on Lulu.com called Taunting the Beast: A love letter to satire, by Christina Triks. It's a social satire that blatantly attacks the PC culture and the lunacy of religion and it's probably the most controversial comedy around. It was obviously inspired by Monty Python and it's absolutely hilarious. Check it out before it's banned.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus is miles ahead the best comedy show I’ve ever seen in my life. There's no other comedy tv-show that's so old and still so fresh than Monty Pythons Flying Circus and this is probably the reason why. #WIsecrackAMA I'm not sure that all the Python's would necessarily agree that subverting meta-narratives, even specifically Arthurian Chivalry is a particularly modern or even Post Modern phenomenon. Terry Jones (medievalist of the Pythons) I'm sure would tell you that Chaucer was doing just that in the Canterbury Tales. Aside from that, good video lads. Enjoying your work a lot and love this one in particular. You should do more stuff on Adventure time, did you see the recent episode that was based on the Sir Gawain and The Green Knight? Don't leave out Don Quixote. I want to know if Python could be a first in it's sheer amount of absurdity thrown at sacred institutions; anyone will probably see it within the first 30 seconds of watching a sketch. With the literary classics, the first barrier was knowing how to read (well, maybe not the Saga, it was probably oral), and having the time to do so. And even then, would the deconstruction be so obvious without some thought? I don't know, sadly I have not read any of these yet. Course, before Python, you could also fine it at the cinema with the Marx Brothers, political cartoons in newspapers, or in satirical theater going back to ancient Rome. But I wonder if Monty Python via the television could be a milestone of sheer amount of popular disrespect. Until newgrounds.com or the onion was invented that is.
@hunglikeahamster3248
@hunglikeahamster3248 6 жыл бұрын
+Magus Marquillin I think the thing that's puzzled me most about Python is how they ever got the BBC to allow them on the air in the first place. Bastion of British government lets some crazy guys shred the fabric of British society every week? To me it's similar to HBO and subsidiaries like Comedy Central, except that the latter are corporate instead of government. A lot of stuff on CC seems a solid effort to tear down their own house, which I respect enormously. I've long thought that it must have been the same rationale for the BBC giving Monty Python their wings. Yes, it was an outlet for pent-up angst against the government, British culture and human nature in general. You need to have some of that in a healthy society, at the least. But MP was *so* subversive. It could have been political suicide, allowing them to continue. In many ways, thankfully it was. The world wouldn't be the same without them. How much more boring would I be if not for them? A lot...
@robertgould1345
@robertgould1345 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure whether Chaucer's society was postmodern. To call Chaucer postmodern is to be anachronistic. Lyotard never said that irony and subversion was invented in the 20th century, he said that the cultural conditions of postmodernity steered us towards irony and subversion, and so Monty Python is an example of the postmodern. Monty Python is not just defined as postmodern because of its contents.

Python was so influential that we would not recognize comedy today had they not existed. Lorne Michaels initially pitched SNL to NBC as 'an American Flying Circus'. South Park, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Its always Sunny, Airplane, Naked Gun.... or for that matter, British TV... The Young Ones, Black Adder, IT Crowd.... the list of hugely influential comedy influenced or existing because of Python is a long one. You can almost break comedy in the English speaking world into 2 eras, pre and post Python. @7:10--You seem to have completely misunderstood the joke the scene, The joke was not that he was using proper form of logic, but rather that he was using *logical-fallacies*, he argued that because both witches and wood burn that must mean witches Sarah other properties with wood which is obviously a logical-fallacy, he then argues that’s because both wood and ducks float that must mean if you weigh the same as a tack you must share that property with wood and dust be similar enough to work to be considered a witch which is also lien on a obvious logical-fallacy, A guy even say in the middle of this reasoning “If she weighs the same as duck, she must be made of wood!” In which the joke is that would be A astrological of a conclusion to draw as her being a witch if she wears the same as a duck. So you see The joke isn’t he Followed former logic just sent an innocent woman to her death, The joke was he *broke the rules of formal logic* in order to get an innocent woman killed, which is funny because he’s called the wise but he was clearly being stupid.

But an innocent woman wasn't killed: the pay-off is that they weigh her against a duck and they weigh the same. The "witch" then says to camera: "It's a fair cop". The truth is the truth, even if it is arrived at using illogic. She is a witch. She weighs the same as a duck. There may be no connection between the two facts. The joke (apart from the ridiculous logic and surprise turnaround, which is funny in itself) is that we may get the right result whilst our assumptions are completely wrong. A bit like Newton.

Prometheus Titan for the choking and spitting on her face that's acting and part of the job. It's not that uncommon to hear of similar tales. For the windy road it was changed last second and terantino didn't bother to check after it was changed and then did not took her seriously from her complains about the car and road. He also constantly checked on her in the hospital and helped her get the footage from the accident after the studio denied her. He's an asshole but not a terrible person.

Thanks for reminding me how not only amazing, but important, Monty Python is. I first watched Holy Grail when I was 14 and I am STILL learning from it. I'm not really sure I would have been as interested in history and politics if it wasn't for the strange points they make, and wondering why I didn't get the joke.

The Monty Python team not only credited The Goon Show and in particular Spike Milligan as their inspiration, but when writing the first series they sat down to watch their hero Spike's latest show Q5 and realised that he had just made what they had written seem mundane and ordinary and they would have to up their game ... Spike Milliagan's family wanted to put "I told you I was ill" on his tombstone as per his wishes, but the cemetery would not let them so they put "Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite" in Irish instead ... (It's "I told you I was ill" ... but the bureaucrats didn't realise this until it was too late) ....

#WisecrackAMA have y'all ever thought of doing a breakdown of Richard Pryor's comedy? I always loved how tightly he walked the line of absurdity and realism

@FarFigSchitter- Jared: This is an awesome idea! We haven’t done enough stuff on stand-up comics, and Pryor is a legend. A while ago we were developing an episode on George Carlin, but something fell through and I’ve been wanting to pick that back up again.

@Alkan0ide -Jared: For some reason, I’m semi-decent in impersonating almost any accent EXCEPT FRENCH. I’m hopeless when it comes to french. Robert: You should have done an outrageous accent a la Holy Grail.
