@Rosita Scarborough the high dowries really discourage people from getting married and creates in some cases a basis for abuse and strife. And this is not just in our culture. India sees an increase in dowry deaths yearly. I just think it's time to reimagine at the least, what joining of families can look like.

Nice educate video Nana. And considerations on your nuptials. I wish you and your husband a happy fruitful union However, please don't call your culture "antiquated" just because you do mot understand certain aspects of it. For instance, the reason your family required the actual marriage instead of " knocking" first was to ensure that the required rites were performed before you begin to act as if you are married.. Often, when the knocking is permitted, the couple inappropriately begins to cohabitate and act as a fully married couple and fail to follow up with the actual traditional rites, sometimes for years, or never. To prevent such issues and delay, many families no longer want the knocking. Also, as you well stated, Traditional Marriage is a full legal marriage unlike what many believe or call an "Engagement ". I hope this helps shed some light.
@NanaAshanti

It does. I still think some requirements can be done away with. I now have things I'll never use. Thats money I could used for other stuff. But nice submission. Love your explanation.

I really enjoyed watching this video Nana. It was good to learn about your ethnicity and your marriage customs.The BRIDEPRICE is about the same for us too, but the alcohol goes to the uncles & aunties and the cash goes to me. Apparently it is a way for the groom to show that he is financially able to provide for you. Ps: I put a twist on my dowry and negotiate the list on behalf of my husband and I to get some of the alcohol 😂. Anyway, Beautiful dress 🥰🤩 Love the blue and Jeff was beaming🥹🥹. In Togo it really depends on the family. It is usually a morning affair. 8am-noon kind of thing. Mine was 10am-1pm because I am not a morning person 😂😂
@briannanight8395
@briannanight8395 2 жыл бұрын
@@Africantoothfairy it defenitely was a morning thing! 🤣🤣🤣 suppose to start at 9. We got there at 9:40 and it started at 10. Ceremony was 2 hours and after that a blur. I was not prepared for it to be that long and i didn't eat breakfast before. I was running up to get in line for food once they served. I never do that so my fiancé was shocked. Even after i wanted more food because the portions weren't giving/i don't eat beef or pork so my i didn't have as much options on food.

Nana, this is so beautiful. & yes a lot of tokenistic stuff but & it's v v necessary, it's an honour to your parents. Look, your whole immediate & extended family are elevated because they've helped raise a v successful, intelligent, well rounded girl. Why should they not ask for a bride price & the added on tos.? Akan marriages, compared to other tribes within Ghana & outside Africa aren't expensive at all. You can also negotiate behind the scenes, if the groom's family think the demand is too high. Seriously, when will these extended family members even see you again? It's time for them to let their hair down too!😜 & they come in handy during other special events in future, such outdooring & funeral ceremonies. You need your extened families to support you. Funniest thing in my case, is how my uncle representing my late Dad asked for the "wardrobe", just when we were about to start the ceremony! lt was never on the list! I nearly throttled him!!😝😝😝. It's great to mix tradition and modernity sometimes; that's our identity, our pride! Awa-re sɔ ooo, don don ooo💃💃💃🤣🤣. Onyame nhyira mo na ɔnyɛ mo kese 🤞🏾👏🏾🙏🏾

The list really can be tailored to the family. The groom's family can always ask for a reduction of the list items especially if they have been dating for a while and the man has been 'taking care' of the lady informally.

What I know is, everything on the list (most of it) are for the woman not her family and they are actually token and you can ask for the list to be reviewed. It’s not the father of the bride that comes up with the list, it’s the elder of the clan/family that gives the list.
@isabelladelaawudi6259
@isabelladelaawudi6259 2 жыл бұрын
Also, this has been toned down cause what I know from the knocking rites, both families kinda conduct an investigation to know more about the families they’re marrying into. The drinks or whatever they presented can be returned if they don’t find faults or in social vices. But lately it’s this isn’t done .
