Appreciate the comment Hsin - I can understand why folks who are getting paid less feel less than positive feelings hearing my salary and frankly even if they’re bitter, I think I’ve achieved my goal in getting folks to reflect on their own potentials and hopefully channeling that energy into something productive. I often hear salaries out of Silicon Valley or SF and think “HOLY SHIT IM MAKING PENNIES” but context ALWAYS trumps a single data point. Here’s to hoping everyone watches actually listens to what I actually said for the rest of the 20min video and not just zoom in on a single dollar figure.

this might be a random question but what degree do you need in order to work as a UX/UI/Product designer? Or at least what did you study in university?

@@chelseachinniah5165 no degree is required to be a product designer, but best to learn from some type of online course or self and practice ui ux for a long time and create a portfolio. As for college degree, maybe human science and psychology would be most related to ux. There is lots of information out on the net

@@chelseachinniah5165 the term product designer covers both ui and ux, some liked to be called as a product designer, but some cases the role can be more specific like ux research, or ui designer. graphic design can definitely help on the ui side which is great. So if ure interested i would definitely recommend doin some research and find the right courses for your situation

I think discrimination is a hard topic for ANYONE to talk about because it forces everyone to take a long deep look inside for prejudices that they carry, either consciously or more often, subconsciously. It's easy to brush aside problems when you don't acknowledge them but once you recognize there's a problem, you need to act. So that's why companies don't like to talk about these issues because it requires them have tough conversations, admit their wrong doings and shift power dynamics. All of these activities require time and energy. Sadly most companies would rather focus time and energy on generating maximum profits than fix systemic issues =\

I hope you find your passion for design again, it’s a rewarding field and can have good compensation possibility.

Someone may need to refer you. DO you have a portfolio? Try to find someone whose already working as a UI/UX and ask if they can refer you, show them your portfolio and if you must offer them an incentive to do so. I think the problem is no one knows who you are. Develop relationships with other writers. Offer to help them with something, find a mentor, join groups of writers online and engage. I may know someone who can help you, reply back, let's chat.

Ms. Moon from Brooklyn I have a mentor, and I have gone to events to get my UX portfolio set up and my resume and cover letters edited to best help me stand out. I’ve met a couple of people at events, but most tell me they’re looking for years of experience or they’re all in a similar position as I am. Going to networking events rn with everything going on is impossible. From my conversations with other UX designers, and even hiring managers, I just don’t have the years of experience. I was thinking maybe Im going to start small, get either another internship, or just get a full time graphic design job and move up from there. I think I need industry experience in general. I don't think it's "years of experience" that directly earns you a job. What people are referring to is just 'experience'. The 'years' part ensures you were exposed to a variety of experienceS (plural!). With that reframing, you might ask yourself how do I expose myself to more than one type of experience? There's other ways to do so like through hackathons, volunteer projects, passion projects, collaborations, design challenges, etc.

Hey there, a google search brings up a mechanical engineering program for the title you provided - not sure if this is correct or not? Most successful Product Managers I worked with come from a project management background. Some come from a local product management training program called the APM. The ones that stood out were excellent at communication, prioritization, and were extremely strategic thinkers.

It's all about context James. Do you live in a high cost living city? What is the average salary of someone of your education/experience/industry in the area you live? These are the people you should be directly comparing yourself against - not an internet stranger who lives in a HCOL city with a completely set of experiences. I shared my example so that people know this is possible - again, within the context of where I live and my industry experience. I hope this helps you reframe your thinking but also offer up the hope that you can also achieve a job that makes you happy and pays well :) All the best.

Nope, they did give us a transportation stipend. Also just to be clear, I wasn’t hired as a UX designer but a IT generalist - it’s just the job where I got my UX start!

It's used interchangeably but in traditional settings, product design is more referring to industrial design.

Hey Andreja, I love to hear international perspectives as it is very humbling and appreciate your examples. My definition of a 'low salary' is in context of Toronto standards where cost of living is VERY high - 1 bedroom condos go for as high as $2500 CAD monthly. This is not including other expenses such as food, transportation, entertainment, childcare, etc. I was privileged at the time to have very low expenses living at home thus was able to take the job. There are folks with more financial obligations who may not have been able to take the same opportunity. I recognize and acknowledge this privilege. My goal to share these details is not to make anyone feel jealous but rather inspired and motivate whoever's watching to put that energy into something productive. All the best.

@@HanBang Yeah that is true, your living expenses are higher than ours. Rent for a one-bedroom (which is literary one room and a bathroom) here goes from 200 to 500 € per month, depends on where you live and also not including all other expenses and these apartments are not new and modern ( old and moldy). I'm a single mom, and due to the virus I lost my job so my income relies on POD sites, luckily I have my own small town-house that I inherited, so no rent for me. But still, 2500 per month is a nice number. The expences here are lower but so are the salaries. I don't know what vacation is cause I haven't been on one since 2009... From all the expenses, by the end of the month, I'm left with 100€ in debt on my bank account and I live extremely low cost ( cheaper groceries, looking at prices all the time for everything). That's why I started doing POD to get some extra income, mostly because they don't demand a degree of any kind. I finished high school, I can edit, design, draw, do vectors, but good luck finding a job here without the paper of DEGREE, having experience or knowledge doesn't count. The companies don't even look at your portfolio if you didn't go to some sort of design school. So I basically work online just to get by. If I wanted to enter a company as a trainee, they are not obligated to pay you. So you basically work for free in order to get a paper saying you gained experiences in the hopes of getting hired eventually. And I have a small and old car because our public transport is non-existing since I live outside the big city, and the companies always ask if you have a driver's license or a car and if you don't they automatically dump your application. And also we don't get promotions... unless you go back to school and get a higher education then they raise your salary according to your educational level, and not all companies do that. My friend went back to school but the company gave him an ultimatum, either he accepts the salary he already had or they'll have to fire him because they can't afford to pay him, even though the company had money to pay him the rase. We have a pay-grade system that sucks, it doesn't depend on the level of your expertise, experience on the field, how long you've been working, but on your educational level. That's why many of my friends started to work for themselves or online as freelancers.

It's all about context - $30k in a high cost of living city like Toronto means you can afford very little.

What do you define as 'working harder'? In my experience, UX Designers are responsible for a lot more of the production lifecycle and EVEN MORE as a product designer where you need to think holistically from a business/product/tech perspective and not just from design perspective like traditional graphic designers do. Curious to hear your experience.

@@HanBang Having more on my plate and needing to know a lot more things as a graphic designer then a UXer. UX positions rarely need to know branding, logo design, art direction, photoshop retouching skills, publication design, packaging, web skills like coding and being able to use different types of CRM and EDM platforms, not to mention video editing and motion design. On the one hand I can earn more, but I cant help but feel a little bitter that I never felt that appreciated or compensated for what I needed to know as a Graphic Designer.

I think what you just described was about 4 different jobs (graphic designer, video editor, content manager, developer). Perhaps there was a miscommunication about the job description or you took on way too much under the role of ‘graphic design’ but if you weren’t paid equivalently to cover that many different jobs, then I totally get your frustration. The beauty of life is that you live and you learn so hopefully you realize now that you were not fairly compensated before and how to avoid that in the future. Best of luck!
