How Much Do Software Developers Earn? My Salary History (React)

A complete run down of every salary i've had as a React Developer. Nothing held back, just real numbers.
I’ve been a front end software developer for three years now, having worked 4 different roles from a software intern all the way through to an intermediate React Developer. Some of the most common and most taboo topics of working in tech is - how much do software engineers make, what's a good salary for a front end developer? A lot of the FANG employees are quite forward with this information, but it seems like everyone in the tier below are not.
I share my complete salary history as a front end software developer all the way from my first job in programming to my last full time role. The majority of my career so far has been in React, and i'd be classified as an intermediate to senior React developer.
Companies like Buffer - have a complete salary spreadsheet of every employee at the company ranging from the CEO to content marketer to software engineer. You can see exactly what everyone makes. This kind of transparency is hugely beneficial when negotiating salaries - both from an employers perspective as well as a potential candidates.
My history has been mainly in front end web technologies, focussing on React. I started off working in New Zealand before moving to Amsterdam but also getting offers from companies in Stockholm, Munich, and London.

You should always fight for what you're worth. Hoping this kind of transparency will help someone negotiate a better pay or prompt some discussions within your own network to ensure you're being paid fairly. I’ve been informed by many that I was underpaid in Amsterdam by around 10-15k which was... eye opening. If this has helped at all, would love to know.

I came to portugal when I was 10, I'm originally from Moldova and I can only say good things about the portuguese people overall. I'd say our biggest problem (apart from corruption cof cof LOL) is that programming work is really based primarily in Lisbon but Porto as well (I live and work in Lisbon) and housing in Lisbon is EXPENSIVE, so unless you're down for 40 min - 1 hour commute or more, to get a house somewhat further away from the center of lisbon then you'll be dropping tons of money on it, I personally take 70-90 minutes to get to the office so my house isn't that expensive, though with covid we're full remote for over a year now and hopefully we stay that way, I get to enjoy average housing price while not having to do any commute

Do you have any negotiation tip? Would you recommend negotiating your salary for a grad role or should you just accept it? If so then how should you go about negotiating?
@MattKander
@MattKander 4 жыл бұрын
Some companies have extremely strict salary brackets so it depends on where your offer is coming from. Do your research on the company, and it's always good to have multiple offers at the same time if you can manage it. It's always good to negotiate where you can, even for a grad. I negotiated my first grad role and know many others who've done the same. Check out "Haseeb Qureshi airbnb salary negotiation" and read through his story of how he negotiated a 250k salary from airbnb. Really useful.
@kidkwlify
@kidkwlify 4 жыл бұрын
@@MattKander So is it best not to negotiate if you don't have multiple? Cuz you don't want to seem unappreciative of the role right. Also if you don't have much coding experience, is it best not to try unless you can prove to them why you deserve a higher salary? Or are there other means of getting a hgiher salary? And is it best to do it over email or in person? Thanks for the suggestion, will check it out!
@MattKander
@MattKander 4 жыл бұрын
I would always negotiate even if I didn’t have another offer lined up. It’s incredibly difficult to increase your salary once you’re in the role, so it’s best to fight for a higher base when you start off. Find out what other grads are getting, compare the industries and size of the company, and read up on negotiating. That will help you a lot. Also - consider the experience you’re getting. That can be worth so much more than an extra 10k. I know someone who gave up a role at Rocketworks (working on satellites and super cool stuff) to come work at my health company as an intern. That job could have easily opened him up to Google, Facebook etc but he chose the money (I think it was only a couple k difference). So, while you need to get paid what you’re worth, consider also what your long game is.

most universities require math method AND recommend specialist mathematics. If you major in computer science (almost all software engineers have a degree in this) then you will definitely do discrete mathematics. Honestly check out the university courses, because most are heavily math based. Becoming a programmer or dev might be better as they have less math, however, there are software engineering positions that don’t actual implement much math work. it really depends on the company

@@MattKander Good question. My entire career has been spent in the tech industry, so I don't know what the other professional fields are like. But the economics are pretty similar for any career that's in demand--employers offering perks and vacation to compete with the other employers.
@CoryJaccino
@CoryJaccino 3 жыл бұрын
In the U.S., it depends on experience, what you are able to negotiate, and length of time with the company. Less than one year of experience or less than one year with the company = 0 days paid leave until after the first year when you get 10 business days. Many employers let you accrue it and even show it on your paychecks but using it is a different story. Most people have to wait the full year. After 2-3 years, you’ll get 2-3 weeks of paid leave to around double the perks you were offered when originally signing on. I forgot to mention that federal holidays, otherwise known as bank holidays, are typically not given to non-bank and non-federal employees. After about five years with a company you might be able to get a month off of work if you are highly valuable. Outside of this, using any of these vacation days in a large bulk of time is difficult. More than a two-week vacation is unheard of unless it’s a sabbatical month you’ve earned from the 5+ years you’ve been there. Not everyone does this or allows this. Most people in the US are afraid to take more than a week vacation at a time. And... you will be contacted on vacation if one of your direct reports needs strategic direction. The majority of the perks are being able to work from home or come in late or leave early or have some kind of flexibility for whatever reason. High end computer equipment or company-sponsored conferences, flights, hotels, etc. I remember getting 3-5 sick days a year but, unlike vacation days, those are not paid out if you quit or are let go. So, it should all make sense now why they would rather give you a flexible schedule than give you vacation days. They’ll never be on the hook for any kind of additional payout. I don’t have any experience with stock compensation but bonuses are rarely more than 5% to 10% of our salary, depending on the seniority level.

Depends entirely on where you are (salaries outside of major cities are not as high). From what i've found, Australia pays more than New Zealand. Auckland pays the most out of any other city (although wellington is similar). For grads in NZ, typically between 55-70 dependent on company. A year or two you can get between 70 and 90. Three years plus you have the chance to get between 90-110 and then seniors will be earning 110-140. Leadership positions 140-180. I'm not sure about australian salaries and how that staggers but it's definitely more.

Hey Matt. I completed my bachelors in Civil engineering. But I want to start my career as a front end developer. Will it be ok?
@MattKander
@MattKander 3 жыл бұрын
If you put in the work - absolutely. It doesn't matter what background you're from, if you put in the work to become a developer, you'll get there. You have an advantage as you've already done a bunch of math and logic based papers as part of engineering. Get started and good luck :)

How did you manage your language barrier issues.
@MattKander
@MattKander 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly that was quite difficult- it was a very multi cultural environment where English was not the first language of many of my colleagues. I really enjoyed that aspect, but you did have to be aware that there are a lot of cultural differences in the tonality and manner that people communicate, what could be considered neutral in one, could be abrasive and confrontational in another. You just have to be patient, make an effort to communicate and be aware of those cultural differences. It’s a joint effort from both sides to meet in the middle. Especially when you’re dealing with high level technical topics, where understanding each other is rather crucial.

500 a day in London for a tech lead is very low. Try double..
@MattKander
@MattKander 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think I said 500 for a tech lead? For most intermediate to senior front ends you’d be between 400-650 and a tech lead would, as you say be around 800-1200 dependent on your area of expertise

@@MattKander how much for a Junior dev though?

Mate, I've been a junior full-stack developer for almost a year now, I don't have degree. I'm self-taught and I also finished a coding bootcamp last year. Here in eastern europe (right in the center, purposefully not naming my country) I get less than a 1000 euros a month. I know a bit of React, worked in Angular, Node.js, Postgresql, MongoDB, Docker, Typescript, JS, Python, used various libraries in it, fiddled around with GraphQL too and I'm constantly taking online courses and improving myself. I hope I'll be able to overcome this shitty salary very soon. I'd be happy to hear your opinion, what I should do or where I should look for better roles! My goal is to earn at least 2000 Euros net a month, which is considered to be pretty decent in my country and only senior devs get it here, if they do...

Europe is the worst place to be a software engineer. Very low salaries comparing to an average salary. Better move to either US or to a low budget country (and work remotely).
@TheCarmacon
@TheCarmacon 3 жыл бұрын
LOL not true. Look at Germany or UK salaries. Even for embedded software engineers it is easy to make 70 k€ right after graduation. If you have a background that's relevant for the automotive industry, e.g. sensor fusion or robotics, then 100 k€ with 2 years experience are well within reach. I know a startup that's currently looking for an engineer with some experience with image processing of LIDAR data and inference on FPGAs - salary (!) is 120-150 k€ (that company is not located in an expensive region so that salary is incredible). Software developers working in the financial or health sector are also paid that well, especially consultants. But those companies are barely known outside their industry and only post new job offers quite locally because they don't want to deal with papers when hiring employees from overseas. There are many high paying, rather small companies in Germany that make very specific products or just components, but pay incredibly well because they're the only company in the world that does this specific thing. And these companies are not accessible to foreigners. But as soon as you're looking at web/game/UI/cloud dev, yes, the salaries drop significantly (with large global companies being the excpeption). But Europe just isn't a web/cloud market, never has been and probably never will be. We do HW development primarily, and add SW to make it run. And that's were the money is.
