Is raising a kid in Singapore expensive?
@leebeaute
@leebeaute 2 ай бұрын
I thought it was expensive when we were residing in Singapore. Extra curricular & tuition made the bulk of it. Until we moved abroad & paid for private schooling & now international tertiary fees, especially the medical field. When they say it cost a million to raise a child they weren’t lying! 😅

Expensive la.. a lot of indirect cost. No kids no need helper no need car, no need enrichment, no need tuition. Add everything is about 4-6k esp with childcare..

I can't afford to send my children to those enrichment centres. So I teach my children myself. It's very tiring and can get frustrating as well when i know they can do well but they are not intrinsically motivated. Somehow despite my scolding, my children get closer to me as I spend alot of time with them talking to them, doing activities, reading with them etc.

Shocked by how young the kids are and they have to go for all these enrichment classes at such an age. Can someone enlighten me why their parents do this? Would you be alright to just let the kids play on their own (lego, puzzles, other kids) rather than go for tons of classes?

1. They want their child to have the best schools and career path, by doing so they need to push their children harder. So that they will be able to pick a good school and get good help from the school. For example I myself got posted to a neighborhood school and it is one of the worse schools while my cousin has many enrichment tuitions and got into the best school in SG. Would you be more happy in a bad school or good school? Parents want their children to choose the school they want otherwise the school chooses them for the bad results. Work hard, play later. That's what parents say to their kids

@@xtd.galaxy1943 It's sad that you think this way. I wonder about the opportunity cost of having a more fulfilled childhood than one where the dreams of parents are projected on their children. Also, being more academically able doesn't mean that one will be happier too. Comparison is indeed the thief of joy.

@@carmen7559 do you live in singapore? Do you see the gst increase, the inflation of food. Higher cost of living. Medical expenses increase. Singapore's education system is Primary>Secondary>Poly or Jc>Uni People who only makes it to poly have a lower salary, thus harder to live in SG. Might as well migrate. People with At least Uni can survive in SG. That's why parents want their child to get better academic results. Choose the schools, get better education, getting better jobs, having better life in the students. I will assume you don't live in SG so you don't feel this

And children chooses what they want to be in the future. Children who work hard get into prestigious schools like RI while children who are not as hardworking get into a neighbourhood school. Watch the O level results day and see for yourself. They all post about straight As and being happy. Have you seen a single person with low grades and being happy in SG. You can go ahead

Hi, to put more perspective, you guys should have interviewed parents who have special needs children. It would be interesting to know what sort of cost pressures this group face. All parents-to-be also need to be aware that they never know whether their child may turn to be a special needs kid or a kid with health problems. And they need to be reasonably prepared for such an eventuality.
@ABC-ed8cg

Solution? Don’t have kids. Having kids is like playing with Russian Roulette. Even if the kid doesn’t have special needs, he or she still have to contend with life’s many stresses & inevitable illness, accidents, old age and suffering. We can put a stop to a mindless vicious cycle.

When I asked about emergency plan if let's say birth at private hospital and need to be transferred to nicu at kkh, my friends just say choi. To me, it's something that can happen to anyone and it shouldn't be taboo to plan for such emergency.

It's no joke to have a kids in Singapore it is relatively very expensive in Singapore. Local Singapore in here earning average of 8 to 13,000 a month before cpf. even with this kind of salary having a kid is not enough and not sustainable in the long term. Married but do not have kids, enjoying life, going on 6 to 8 holidays a year. Ranging from over the weekend to bkk, Vietnam, Cambodia or Bali. Or even long trips that can go up to almost a month of holiday. Without kids you have the freedom to do this after you have kids everything boils down to your kid over your freedom and responsibilities. I have friends who have kids and they are struggling by paycheck to paycheck. Imagine having a kid at an average 30 years old, when your kids 21 you are already 51 years old. At the age of 51 do you still have the energy to see the world?? Or even endure long haul flights over 10 hours to Europe or North America I doubt so. For myself and my partner, we get to see the world and get to spend on whatever we want in our Lifetime. If we were to die tomorrow we have no regrets on living fully while on this earth. Definitely to each of their own. Not saying no kids are good, end of the day would you rather suffer your life till 50 plus years old meeting paychecks to paychecks or would you want to enjoy life and have no regrets when the time has come for you to go.

It's a competitive world out there and young children need plenty of professional help. The sad truth is that if the young children survive this gruelling phase, they have a very good chance to be successful in life. All this extra curricular activities while unhealthy is necessary for growth. Foreigners are coming for our rice bowl.
