Avoid european/US brand cars cuz the maintenance and spare parts gonna cost u a lot. Stick to malaysian cars or japanese car like toyota, honda.

My family has had the same maid for over 20 years now Alhamdulillah. She is awesome, like my own mother. We cover everything from flight tickets, medical, food, clothes, gifts literally everything and not one cent of her income need to be spent on herself. Never will we change and if she finally wants to stop working (we've asked many times), we won't be taking new maids. So many untrustworthy maids nowadays 🥲

I've been in KL for nearly 4 years, and I'm impressed how quickly you've caught up. Agree with most of it, but my utilities and food for 4 people are half versus your calculation. I was just in UK for 1 week, and by the time I landed back in KL, my love for Malaysia had grown multifold.

From the list, as a local, you can cut a few things on the list. Rent, a two storrey terrace maybe a little off outside the city but still accessible to it around rm1500. Way cheaper in states other than KL Internet for home and phone (1 person) for about rm200. If just the phone ,rm60-80 per person. No need for maids if you can find a day to clean up once a week. Car, if you are looking for a B segment sedan, would be around rm700-1100. Less than rm500 for a compact car or segment A sedan. Go for local brands like proton and perodua, or japanese ones. Bills, electricity bills especially, if you don't mind spending more time under the fan, then you could do under rm200 per month. Groceries, it depends on how many things u need for your meals and house supplies. I'd say rm500 should be average if you have a family. Find a wet market or morning market for cheaper stuffs. Aeon is pretty expensive on some things.

I would like to suggest for foreigner who wants settle down in Malaysia, if you have enough cash please buy a house and a car in cash. Those costs will take up the top 2 utmost of the budget. The rest of the expenses will be bearable around rm5k maximum per month. This is my experience when i settled my house and car loans. It left me with an extra cash which i find it useful. Yes it is true if you want to buy a car choose of malaysian brand and japanese brand because the car maintanance is much much cheaper than the continental one. I used mercedes before and i opt for honda and toyota now and i save a lot.

With the rising tariffs and removal of energy subsidies, perhaps can consider installing solar panels to reduce electricity costs. I've paid RM38k for approximately 1300kwh monthly of power generation and it reduces my bill from RM650 to just RM30+/- per month. I shall get my ROI in the 6th year 😂

Aeon is not a high end grocer. Price are quite reasonable. Unless they are imported items . Most Malaysians go to Aeon, Hero, NSK, Giant, Mydin & such for their groceries. The high end grocers in Malaysia are Jaya Grocer & Village Grocers. Jaya Grocer carries select product ranges from Coles in Australia & Sainsbury UK.

bcareful of taking a living maid...lots of cases..maid runaway with your stuff...it does happen lots even though the wages has goin up..my sister in law maid run in middle of the nite..with her money,gold, ..n other valueble stuff..even though she treat her like own family.. Edit : she paid her rm2200..bcoz she really like dat maid..but sadly..she run in the middle of the nite..following her new bangladeshi or pakistani boyfriend..coz my sister in law said 3 weeks bfore ..she happen to saw a man in front of her house looking like pakistani/bangladeshi man talking with dat maid in front of her house..b extra2 careful..dis kind of things really do hapoen a lots..with the indonesian maid

11:30 bear in mind that there are talks that fuel subsidy rationalization is coming this year. So once they remove or reduce the subsidies further, it could cost more. Do budget for that eventuality.

My monthly expanse for a family of 5 is : Provisions = rm1500 Petrol =rm400 Electric bill / TNB = rm300 Water bill = rm50 Internet 100GB /ph bill= rm120 Misc Expences= rm500 Childrens education : subsidised by PTPTN for their degree courses fees. Total per month ~ rm 3500 to rm4000. rm18,000 - rm4000 = rm14,000 savings😊

You can live with RM200 electricity for a family 4 and RM1000 grocery per month comfortably. AEON is expensive because some are imported products. So you still have more room to save and live modest living.

Assalamualaikum. We used to have in Malaysia the following supermarkets 1. Jusco (Japan). Now rebranded as Aeon. 2. Carrefour. Now taken over by Aeon and renamed Aeon Big. 3. Tesco. Sold to Lotus, from Thailand. 4. Giant. For cars, all new cars will attract a minimum customs excise duties of minimum 75%. For imported cars from South East Asia, there are import tax which is max 5%. Imports from any other region would see heavier tax, if not mistaken minimum 120% up to 300%. EVs are tax free until 2025. There is also another type of cars popular in Malaysia which is known as recond (reconditioned) used imports from either UK or Japan. Mainly, the large boxy people carrier known as Toyota Alphard and Toyota Vellfire which is the preferred choice amongst businessmen, millionaires, politicians, ministers and pop stars more than Mercedes S class and BMW 7 series. Fords are never popular here (except for the mid range Ranger pick trucks lately). Same goes to Renault and Peugoet. Vauxhall is pretty much non-existent after British left Malaysia more than 50 years ago.

The high electricity cost is usually due to 2 things, ie air conditioning and water heater.. easily 50% of your cost there. It can really shoot up if you have a water pump, especially if you have a koi pond or swimming pool..

I would say Aeon has 3 main hypermarket tier. Aeonbig being the most affordable one. Then there're Aeon and Aeon Max Value. I think for regular Malaysians, mostly we go to Lotus, Aeonbig, Checkers or NSK because it's cheaper there. I believe soon they will implement targeted subsidy for petrol. I calculated for myself, if that happens, my petrol cost will increase somewhere between RM20 to RM50 per week.

As a Malaysian, and I've been in Malacca for 9 years, I would say that, that living cost is definitely on the higher side. Definitely a comfortable, way above the median level malaysians living standard. 7k a month can get you through a lot especially in Malacca. Might also be good to add school fees and phone bills (Although phone is very cheap here). Another good thing to add, and somehow seems like a compulsory, is a drinking water filter dispenser machine. Amazing content by the way! Cheers! Assalamualaikum!

As for me living alone, I spent roughly Rm5000 to 6000 per month to live comfortably.

Bear in mind, basically this breakdown, as saira’s said, she is being really generous. Which is yes, really2 generous. For locals’ that definitely a very comfortable life, more like for the upper class. So if lets say, if your budget is just half of saira’s budget, dont worry, you can still live comfortably. You just have to know where to cut the budgets a bit, where to buy things, and priorities things better.

The one thing I do is to go to different markets for different things. When I was in the UK it was easier though, because a lot of cities are walkable. But here I go to Aeon for fresh produce and Lotus for water (I probably should get a water filter). Luckily where I live (Nilai) there are Aeon, Lotus and Giant all within 2-3km drive. There’s a Speedmart 99 as well, which price is actually unbeatable for certain household products (cleaning supplies mostly).

In Mont kiara Kuala Lumpur you can get around RM2500-RM3000 for 3 bedroom and 2 bathroom with 1 car park. Walking distance to shopping mall one Mont kiara and a few other shopping mall likes 163 Mont kiara, publika shopping mall, Solaris shopping mall.

Honeymoon period. Everything nice and dandy.

i would says that generous calculation of u doing around rm7100 per month for a single life there..i mean,thats the cost of being a foreigner in other's land,but least its realistic...after a month,2 maybe can tone down a bit but overall,as local,i believe as foreigner u need at least RM6-7k per monthly basis to pay around the bils ,and the earning should be around rm10,000 per month by the least if u wanted..

I have 4 kids under the age of 13 yrs so schooling costs is going to be my biggest expense. The research I have done here in the Uk led me to believe that school fèes for 1 child was £500 per month but your calculation covers that for 2 kids. Can you please advise the best approach to confirming school fees?

The place you are living seems miles from anywhere. I’ve seen these new developments springing up outside of KL, but they look a bit isolated and one wonders what there is to do in these places. It’s alright saying you can go for a walk or play golf, but that can get a bit boring after a while.

I'm currently looking for a place to say somewhere near Bangsar since my daughter's gonna attend therapy there. We're planning to move there in a couple months, just me and my daughter, but my husband will visit from time to time. So we don't need anything big, 1 or 2 bedrooms is enough. I've checked on some options in different areas and found that for that specific type the average rent costs RM2300-2700. Is that normal or too expensive?

International Islamic schools in Putrajaya are very expensive. We paid $500/month per child. So if you have more than 2 kids, it can be very pricy.
