Used to get tinned curries from Lidl in the old days. They were so good I used to buy them by the tray - 15 tins at a time. I think I was somewhat addicted to the taste. I think they were using Brazillian Beef (or in those days it could just as easily have been Horsemeat if you remember that particular food scandal). I haven't been in Lidl for years though and I didn't find them when I was last in otherwise I would have bought a shedload. That M&S curry is ludicrously expensive for what you are getting. I agree with you though, you can tart up a cheap curry with a bit of Chilli or some bits and bobs.

'Tuning' any store bought curry with a few basic ingredients is a bit of an art. Bags of cooked chicken strips are very cheap too. There is no justification for the M&S curry price but Lidl should also spend just a bit more on ingredients.

honestly, you'd have them with rice anyway, so some chilli flakes and maybe some frozen veg tossed into the curry, and the Lidl one would make a great meal at a fraction of the price, or I could spend like £3 more than the M&S curry at my local takeaway, and get more curry, more chicken, and rice with it, either option would be better than paying that much for a tinned M&S curry 😂

Ooh M and S food.... Treat... Got vouchers for M and S as a gift. We were going on self catering holiday (2 dogs) so to make up for no cordon blue cooking, we shopped with the vouchers and our food was tasty, even in comparison to the named brands in supermarkets. Occasionally I go in and bring home something 'nice', but as you say prices are so much higher but there are times when quality outshines the cost... I keep a store cupboard of tins (rural living, power outages, snowed in etc) and my other half is happy with our local supermarket's own brands but 400g doesn't go far between two people!!!

I would use the Lidl one as a kind of curry sauce, and chuck in some leftover meat or vegetables, and maybe some spices - depends on the flavour - and it would be all right for the price. There is no way it would serve two on its own, or even with rice or bread, unless I did that, though. It is good to get a comparison, so thanks for that, but the M&S one is too dear for me. Congratulations on the Worcestershire sauce - the elocutions lessons are paying off! 😜

Nice review Gareth! As for reheating in the microwave, I have read recently that most of us (myself included) use full power when heating up or reheating dishes. Proper way, from the article, is to lower the power, but cook longer, as it gently heats the food you are cooking. You won't overcook food. I have tried this method and it does work, but I have a Panasonic microwave for quite a number of years and it works quite well!

Asda do their own version of tinned curries. They have Korma, Tikka and Jalfrezi. I like them with chips or a jacket potato. A nice quick easy meal. When comparing to the Aldi/Lidl versions, I found Princes were similar. Though, the Aldi/Lidl ones have certainly cut back on the amount of chicken you get in them. Cheaper, yes, but less product!!

The M&S one would definitely be off my list and not just for price, I can't stand sweet curries but as you say we all have our own tastes. Shame the Lidl one was so lacking in chicken pieces but then again I can get a Lidl Madras ready meal for £2.49 which includes rice and only takes about 5 mins in the microwave. By the way, that Newgate brand is common for Lidl, I buy the baked beans for 42p a can and they're really nice. I bought a can of Newgate mushy peas the other day and that will be a true test - I love Batchelor's mushy peas but if the Newgate ones come close I'll stick with them.

Woos-ter-shear sauce. I think I'd blow the budget and go with the M&S curry. It may be all the money, but bang for buck it has more flavour, chicken and better consistency. If I wanted a coconut curry sauce with a few bits of chicken thrown in, I'd buy Lidl. But if I wanted something half decent for a meal, I'd choose M&S. Great comparison review Gareth 😠🤤😀 Keep Calm and Curry On

Depends on how much cash you can spare. I think I might opt for a bag of chicken strips, a few veg', a curry sauce sachet & some extra spices. That way I could probably make several times the quantity for the price of the M&S tin & have the benefit of tailoring them to my taste too. It would probably be nutritionally superior too by the time I had put the veg in.

Great video, could really see what you get in both cans. For me they are both overpriced, the cheaper can looked more like soup and 4.25 for a tinned Curry is extortionate no matter how nice it is. What you find is all the basic source comes from one distributor so if you look at the addresses on the back, they’re not far away from each other. I used to work in a bakery in Avonmouth they covered all of the supermarkets, same bread, just a different sleeve. Same with wisemen diaries, same cow, different label from the cow.

I'd like to recommend the Tesco Beef Curry 392g for about £2.40 normally. I do eat the Newgate chicken sometimes but think the taste isn't absorbed by the meat. I nuke them for 3 minutes and let them cool whilst I nuke some 2 minute rice. My naan bread warms in the toaster in the same 2 minutes as the rice, which is precision meal prep.

The thing I like about M&S food is that unless the whole thing is not to your taste you will actually not end up throwing much away. It may be a lot more expensive, but in this taste test the expression on Gareth's face said it all, it was enjoyable and a real experience of good curry. If you only eat the Lidl one, and he was searching for chicken in it, you probably will think it is by far a better buy for a chicken curry, but let's face it, you get what you pay for.

That m and s line of tinned chilli is very nice. More like a homemade than any other tinned chilli.

I actually shrieked out when you said the M&S price. But one could see the difference as soon as you poured the curries into the bowls. One could see very little chicken in the Lidl version. However, with a side of rice, both would be tasty enough for the price. Lidl shoppers are hardly going to buy the Newgate AND the M&S.

.......shocking price for M&S, but it did look good. Why is it they all fall short of the chilli heat though? Great comparison video.😎🍻

M&S, very dear. I don't often buy canned Curries, but if I do, add extra spices and some mash 👍

Gareth, for the actual chicken content by weight, M&S is 41% of a 400g tin, so 164g chicken and the LIDL 35% of 400g is 140g of chicken. So the difference is 24g.

As you say Gareth, what's hot to one person would be medium to another and any curry benefits from adding cooked veg, the sauce gives plain veg lovely flavour. Good comparison tho and not much meat in either one. Regards Nanny Gail.

I've tried the Asda korma curry , think you done them ages ago , they taste alright if you like a mild curry. Think they used to be about 1.50 Inna tin. And I got one of those micro packet rice to go with it.

Interesting to hear your comment on ' Worcestershire ' sauce. To us Brits its always been Worcester Sauce.its the US that states ' Shire ' as Shyre. I live in Yorkshire and not Yorkshyre.. lol.

Thanks for video appreciate it. Some info for you. What you are not told is the fact that the chicken has a preservative injected into it which box the chicken out. it is a mixture from numerous substances. Shall we say that are in the water that are injected into the chicken itself prior before production process. This is a natural practice within the industry. You’ll also find the same situation when it comes to bacon.. when you place a slice of bacon into the pan, you will see certain residues coming from the bacon. Some of which are. is an industry trick is the fact that you are paying for the weight of the produce. Unfortunately what you’ve got to understand is food products are QA tested very highly. But what you’ve got to understand also is the standard is also done as bulk. When you come to taste it it’s done as bulk so it’s not necessary. The amount that specified on the can that is the reason why you get percentages. Not just the multitude of chicken, it’s what the taste of the product agrees with yourself as a consumer and the end confirmed product. Most manufactures have been told to cut down the salts and sugars, so you will find in the foreseeable future. They will be gradually trimmed down in other informative products just to give you an insight what’s coming in the foreseeable future. They will be very safe so don’t shy from that. I hope you do read this and take some insight and write. Thanks again for the video look after your friends and family and bye for now.

It’s some price difference but I’d probably pay the extra just to get the quality from M & S. I do live alone though so,as it’s just me, I’m able to pay extra if I wanted. I don’t think I’d be paying that if I had a family shop to be doing.

You could of bought the Lidl curry and two fresh chicken breasts and still be under the M&S price. As for the chicken content, M&S has 164 grams per tin and Lidl has 140 grams per tin, you asked for the nerdy facts, Gareth, so I gave them to you 😃 Great review mate, take care...

Didn't need the taste test, knew M&S would be better. For Lidl to put water in a curry sauce is what allows them to discount heavily. That's a bit cheeky. I would make curries from scratch anyway but if I had to chose, £4.25 is worth the extra meat and flavour.

I have had the Lidl chicken curry before it's okay to have in for a quick meal but I stopped buying it because it really jumped up in price it only used to be 99p a tin. I have also tried the M & S one I seem to recall I won a mini food hamper and that was in there that was okay as well but I wouldn't pay £4.25 a tin for it you can get a 400 gram curry out of the chilled cabinet in the supermarket for less money and they are using much better quality chicken. All these tinned chicken product use old hens that have finished there egg laying careers although perfectly edible they are not the best quality chicken.
