I started investing 18 months ago for the first and for the first 12 months I underperform the market by 30% since I was trying to be Mr. Buffett and picking my own stocks. In the past 6 months I decided to keep it simple and stay with 50% SP500, 40% VGT, and 10% individual stocks (Which is just Amazon). Since making that change, I am now caught up to the SP500 and barely beating it by 1.5%. My point is, if you are not a technical person and don't have time to do your research, just by the whole market and forget the rest. Best of luck to everyone!

Exactly. What you are doing is what I call investing. Everyone should do that. Only those with time and interest should trade. And dont confuse the two. Do not make a losing trade an investment. And dont "trade" things you are investing in for the long term. (market timing). And dont confuse either for gambling. Which is what many do buying OTM Call options on stocks. Or putting a larger percentage of their portfolio in an uproven company.

I really like TSM, honestly it's one that I probably should've looked at harder, but having NVDA as my largest holding already makes me a little hesitant to put significant funds in another company in that area. Although I will say, if I did...it would probably be TSM or AVGO. In general for TSM, from a straight business perspective they are going to do well for a long time IMO. It doesn't matter which fabless chip company is ahead at any given moment, they are likely going to use TSM. I'm not sure how much market share Samsung takes, but I don't think Intel is close to competing with them at the foundry level. Obviously TSM has geopolitical risk, but that is true of every semiconductor company since they depend on them anyway. So yeah, I like their business a lot, I just haven't looked into buying them as hard as I probably should've because of how much I have in NVDA right now. Also...thank you!

Hi Matt, new subscriber here. Glad I came across your channel. I enjoyed seeing your investing goals and performance. I am retired and benchmark my performance against DGRO and SCHD since I lean toward dividend growth and yield. Does this sound reasonable to you?
@mattderron
@mattderron 7 күн бұрын
Thank you, I appreciate it! My answer to your question would be....yes...with an caveat. Assuming that the criteria that is important to you also matches the criteria that DGRO and SCHD's benchmark's look at...then yes it makes sense. I don't remember what DGRO's is off the top of my head, but SCHD is mostly focused on undervalued dividend payers in the top 50% of yield. It just so happens they also have had good dividend growth as well, even though it's only about 25% of their composite score. But yes, assuming the criteria that matters to you also matches what those ETFs are looking for in their index (or close to it) then it makes sense as a benchmark to me.

Microsoft is an amazing company that I was planning to add this year. I just felt like the opportunities in the other companies I added (AMZN, GOOGL, META, NVDA) were better at the time than MSFT. Obviously it trades at a premium almost all the time. So...part of it was timing, part of it was thinking the opportunity was better in the moment with the other companies when I bought. We'll see. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just wondering if you have looked at LVMH and RACE two luxury brands which I hold and absolutely love, the businesses are amazing, huge moats and they offer growing dividends and I like the fact they provide a nice diversification from the tech sector while still performing nicely. do a deep dive into INTU, if you're considering adding a new position into your portfolio. incredible cash flow metrics and 15% dividend growth rate over the last 10 years. it's P/E ratio is high at the moment, but definitely one to keep an eye on long-term
@mattderron
@mattderron 7 күн бұрын
INTU is one of those companies where...if I look at their fundamentals they look great. Profitability is good, growth is good, all those things are good. The problem for me is that I hate using their products lol. I've used TurboTax for over a decade and while the fact that all my data and history is there makes it so I'll likely never leave (which is good for their business), I can't stand it. Their experience has become so spammy and the constant upsells are annoying. They are terribly misleading with trying to get you to share more of your data with them so they can use it (they make it seem like it's a required part of filing your taxes when it's not). If I could easily move to something different, I would. I've used Mailchimp and Quickbooks much less but the times I tried them out it was a similar experience. So...it might sound dumb but that's why I haven't really dug into them any deeper than basic metrics. I just don't like the company as a user, but I understand why their business is doing well. Hope that makes sense, that's just me though 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you’re just starting out I highly recommend just focusing on index funds at first (S&P 500 is great) and get in the habit of consistently investing each paycheck / month. If you really want to buy individual stocks just start with 1 or 2 and get your process down of how you will research, manage them etc. I did index funds only for like 10 years before I did individual stocks and other things

With most of your portfolio being the top market caps in the S&P, how you expecting to beat it? (Not meant in a negative way) Just hoping your mix outpaces it? Also you should make a video on small caps. I feel like those are such an enigma unless you have some sort of inside intel...
@mattderron
@mattderron 7 күн бұрын
I explained this in a different video - simple strategy. My allocation to some of those top companies is higher than the index. If they do well, they will contribute more to my portfolio than the index. Ie, Amazon is 3.6% of the index, it's 13% of my portfolio. Nvidia is 6% of the index, it's 17% of my portfolio. They do well, they will contribute higher returns to my portfolio versus the market. The idea for me is picking the winning companies that I think will keep winning...instead of trying to find a small cap gem that will become the next winner. There's significantly more risk in trying to do that. I'm not against small caps, but in general I don't start really looking at a company until they are profitable (operating income > 0). Many interesting small caps aren't there yet. The ones that are frequently are in lower growth / lower margin businesses. Every once in a while there's something there that I will take interest in, but in general that's not my strategy.
@jackcarlos
@jackcarlos 7 күн бұрын
@mattderron Thanks for the explanation! Seems weird that the main strategy for all small caps is to reinvest all profit, take on a ton of debt, promise explosive growth, and hope the future is bright. But I guess that's the only option when they're up against the Amazons of the world. Definitely more risky to invest in but it feels like that's the only place you find those 10x types of wins
@mattderron
@mattderron 7 күн бұрын
I get it, the only thing I would say is...Apple did a 10x over the last 10 years and they were already a big company. Obviously Nvidia more recently. If you can find a big small cap winner it's huge, but I think there's a lot of opportunity even in the big companies and they're not all that hard to find. They feel almost too easy so folks pass them up ("money's already made" etc). I don't know, lot of different ways to invest people just have to find what works best for them.

I'm new to investing on my own, for years and still now I have accounts with investment brokers. Since paying my house off earlier this years I started to DCA about $1500. Initially, I got carried away and bought about 15 ETF and stocks. It seemed watered down so now I'm down to 4 ETF and 3 individual stocks. Just wondering if 7 is still too many or not enough?
@thedabbler3784
@thedabbler3784 8 күн бұрын
Double check that your etfs don’t overlap. No set number is a correct number to hold. My journey has shown me to start small and build. Too many too fast slows down returns. ETF split I like is 60/40 vgt/schd and do core satellite method, easier set and forget vs managing individual stocks.
@jamescares9003
@jamescares9003 8 күн бұрын
@@thedabbler3784 Not my main portfolio so I want to be semi-aggressive. I have 4 ETF's. A Core, growth, total market, and a semi-conductor so there will be overlap and as of now equal weighted.
@mattderron
@mattderron 7 күн бұрын
There is no "one right answer" to how many make sense for you. It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish and what each of those ETFs and stocks brings to your portfolio. I agree it would make sense to check the overlap of your ETFs, but again overlap itself isn't bad. If you intend to overweight certain stocks/sectors on purpose, then it's perfectly fine. The best thing I can say is that there are no real rules. For me, I try to only keep as many individual stocks as I can meaningfully monitor. For ETFs it's simply that the methodology of the index fits my goals / criteria. Good luck!

Looking at historical price metrics I would say yes, but when accounting for growth rate and relative high P/CF it doesn’t come out as attractive as some of the other options. It’s still at a 25 P/CF with a 9% OCF growth rate. Compared to like META which is at like a 17 P/CF and 20% projected OCF growth rate. Now…those are just numbers in a spreadsheet and obviously I think Visa is a long term winner and one of my favorite stocks. Just trying to explain why it wasn’t on my “most attractive” list right now.
