I always love that you point out that any changes to be more sustainable are good, and that no one is perfect. And that what zero waste looks like it one part of the world, isn't feasible in another. Being more eco-friendly isn't all or nothing, and I love that you make sure people know that. 😊

I'm from Texas and a lot of our food comes from "the valley" in south texas, sometimes you can find people selling yellow watermelons and black diamond watermelons on the side of the road, but you can also find people selling conventional produce with stickers they couldn't be bothered to peel off at the farmer's market. Even worse- they markup the prices of the produce when you could go to the store and buy it for much cheaper.

In Australia we can recycle tetra pak with our glass/plastic/aluminium. It's called Return & Earn (in NSW) & you get $0.10 (10 cents) for every container you recycle. Glass is one section & everything else goes into another section. This is separate to our household recycling that gets collected from our homes by the council.

Ever since i was little i was taught to eat the pea pods raw and honestly, I think these are the best part(even the ones that are not sweet peas )! I do it by cracking one end of the open pea pod and pull it townwards to peel the thin membrane off (which is chewy and does not taste good). Sometimes it does not want to come off in one piece and then i just crack that in half and get the membrane off that way.

One of the biggest struggles I've had since moving from a city to a rural area is how hard it is to be 'zero waste' and the absolute lack of understanding and compassion from zero waste circles. I drive an hour to a grocery store and as a result I buy a lot of stuff that is packaged and will last longer so I can drive less frequently and not produce food waste. I'd love to see less judgement we aren't going to get people on board blaming personal choices

You can freeze the veg scraps (pea shells, onion skins, carrot skins, etc) and make vegetable stock. You'll still have to compost the scraps afterwards but you can get a second use out of them.

Where I live there is still no bulk store near me because of covid. I saw a video of these guys taking onion skins, carrot skins, garlic skins, carrot tops, and drying them out in the oven to make powder. They then took the powder and blended them up with some mayo to make a sauce for under a vegetable. I found it interesting. I don't know what you can do with those pea pods. For me this year I've really focusing on food waste and eating everything I can possibly can. I've been eating the orange skins or hand dry them cut into bits to use for teas or blending them into powder. The powder I make a spice blend like mixing it up with garlic granules, onion powder, thyme, and orange peel powder. Everything is a wonderful experience to try to improve each day. Love watching your videos.....thanks again

To those who call you an "idealist", my two kids and I live a very realistic low-waste lifestyle (we bring our own bags to the local farm for produce, byob to the bulk store, avoid plastic, our clothes and toys are secondhand/thrifted, we compost, etc.) and all of these routines and systems are the continuation of a "zero-waste" journey that began several years ago. I guess my point is that sustainable living is actually very realistic for most people who make a decent salary/wages, but it takes time, as all good things do.

PS - you can slice those pea pods into slivers and put them into a stir fry. They might not be "sweet" but I have used them in stir fries and ramen recipes with no issues at all.

Hahha I loved the little "Molls" clip, lasts like a second in the middle of you showing dish washing soap. Btw I envy that you can eat that gluten free pasta. I asked in my bulk shop and they told me that all of their gluten free pasta is "contaminated" for someone like me-I have celiac:( so I have to buy pasta in plastic bags or risk getting sick. I wish they could somehow separete it in the store.

I’ve never thought about that cardboard can’t be recycled. I live in Sweden and all cardboard packaging I’ve come across says: sort as cardboard at the back of the packaging. Even if it is a cardboard, plastic blend as I understand it. It is crazy that it can vary so much from country to country.

It is indeed crazy (& confusing sometimes). I live in the US and have had waste disposal providers who specifically say that “shiny” (aka plastic blend) paper/ cardboard products are recyclable. But it can vary widely from provider to provider, even in the same city!

Love these videos, I'm always challenging myself to do a little bit better, last year I took put my city garbage bin every 6 months, this year I'm challenging myself to 7. Its been hard with the pandemic though and choosing local resturants with waste (as most of the time we couldn't eat in and I didn't feel comfortable doing that either) but local vs physical waste is always a a debate for me. I have sent messages to places about their packaging and most of them have been very responsive but also lots of people have complained about the more eco friendly packaging because of spills so what can you do.

you can make green juice from the pea pods, I know there will still be some pulp waste but less, and it's really fresh tasting! nice with lemon. I think it would also be possible to boil them and blend them to make a puree or soup without any waste, but sometimes I'm not too much of a fan of very fibrous things in soups/purees so I haven't tried that.

i love your vlog/fma type videos so much!!! and i'd love a regular update on how much rubbish you produce each time because it's so interesting to see how it varies!! it's really discouraging sometimes for me, because ever since going vegan, i've been producing so much more tetrapak and yoghurt cup waste because you can get lots of dairy in glass jars/bottles, but i haven't seen any german supermarket carry vegan products in glass :/ and rationally i know that it's not only about reducing VISIBLE waste, but in the end it's hard not to beat yourself down about it, ya feel? anyway, i'd love to hear more about your daily waste and also an explanation on the mixed material symbols because those are... confusing 😂 have a nice day!! 🌼💕

A recycling symbols guide would be great, but please make sure to stress that it can vary by country or even within a country. Like in my country (Czechia), you can actually recycle stuff like milk cartons (tetrapak), in some cities we even have special containers for it. (But the plastic from inside of the carton probably doesn't get recycled ☹ ) One day hopefully it won't be so confusing, at least within regions like EU.
