Last week I was at a cafe with my partner and they said they were out of avocado- then I saw one of the staff throwing a whole crate of avocados in a trash bag....so like a weirdo I followed her towards the trashcan and asked if I could have them. She said " they are mushy mushy mushy but be my guest" and we made a MASSIVE bowl of guacamole from the trash avos. Of course there were parts that were brown and squished that we composted and a few were moldy, but so much was still good and it made a lot of food!

Jens's excitement over the Nutella is so pure! This is such a cool shop. We have some similar stuff in the US but I've heard they don't *actually* have items that would be discarded, but act like they do? It's really difficult to tell what's actually rescued vs. greenwashing.

This was such a fun video! I'm looking forward to the future installments of this series. Matatos reminds me of Misfits Market and Imperfect Foods (both available in the U.S.). Also, I must echo the previous comments and say that I love seeing Jens in your videos! I feel like a lot of KZfaqrs' partners aren't super happy to be on camera, but Jens just goes with it.

Once I bought an orange with bruised skin because I knew I was going to eat it when I left the grocery store, and the cashier was trying to talk me out of buying it and offered to run and get me a "better" one. When I refused and bought it anyway he looked at me like I was odd 😆

5:28 Their legume-based pastas are actually quite tasty (I like the red lentil ones the most) but normally really expensive as compared to other brands :D Also, you know what is sad? Cans are usually wrapped in plastic anyways - maybe not individually but very often in sets of 6 or 12 (depending on the brand). They are just taken out of the foil at the shop :(

Loved this video and l wish the US had a program like that. Also for the not as great version of nutella, you could make "nice cream" which is like ice cream but just frozen bananas blended and add that in as a fun treat/snack

I really love when u cook! Its always inspiring and out of the box, turning up the volume on regular vegan meals. But id love to see a more methodical version of this where the recipes would be easier to follow, maybe thats just not what ure going for but im sure that im not the only one who would like to try ur recipes out if possible! Ah no. You need to have liquids in nut butters or they destroy your blenders. I used to have to make tahini daily for a job. I would put all the liquids in the bottom of the blender and then add the sesame seed “butter” mix completely then add other stuff. Freaking hate sesame “butter” now. XD

to make a nut butter you dont need anything but the nuts. you blend them so long that they become liquid, it does happen! dont add anything until its a butter, then add the cocoa powder and sweetner.

Where I live in Calgary, there is always lots of good deals on a variety of foods, so I would highly recommend Flashfood if it's available to you, to help you save food that would otherwise go to waste (as well as saving money on groceries)!

Motatos is so cool! I wish the US had something like that. We have that but with organic “ugly produce” and sometimes there are packaged items that can be added on that were also rescued for package changes, excess, etc. but it would be nice to just be able to order the packaged items sometimes.

Do you make allowances for certain ingredients when buying from these places or dumpster diving? Like would you turn a blind eye to honey or Carmine shellac etc? If I accidentally buy something with those in (cause I wasn’t paying attention reading the ingredients for example) I’d still eat them. But idk what people think when it comes to buying surplus discarded stock this way. Though there aren’t any companies that do this where I am (I don’t think)

imperfect foods is the closest thing. they do have a good amount of packaged foods that you can buy, some are made with rescued/imperfect foods but others they have added to allow customers to buy most staples while shopping with imperfect foods. you can buy only the packaged foods if you prefer to not get the produce, each week you pick what you want to eat. it's not quite like the company in the video though, since the packaged items aren't rescued. it would be really cool if imperfect foods added damaged packaging rescued foods!

Awesome video, in Quebec Canada we have an app called Flash Food where they put up food about to expire. I buy a lot of food from there :) its also very cheap and have HUGE deals like 6 bagels for 25 cents !!!!
