How much water should I use in watercolor painting? It's probably the most common question from watercolour beginners. And the honest answer is... it depends! I know, it's not what you want to hear. In this video, I'll be showing you some tips to work out how much water you need in your watercolour paint mixes.
First, we look at why water is so important for watercolour painting and how to keep water clean as you're painting. I'll take you through my two-cup system and some alternatives to try. Then we'll talk about value in watercolour and how to use water to dilute your colours.
Next, we'll troubleshoot! I'll show you what it looks like if you don't have enough water on your brush. Then we'll look at what happens when you're using too much water, and how to pick up puddles. We'll talk about hard edges in watercolour, why they happen and how to fix them.
Finally, we'll talk about some other things that might affect how much water you need, including paint type, brush size and paper type.
