Why aren't musicians good at describing sounds? What does it mean when somethings sounds heavy, or light, or sharp, or round, or creamy, or smooth? There are a million words to describe a sound, so why do some descriptors just sound right and others do not? In this in depth music theory video we explore that very topic by looking at theories and ideas from linguistics, psychology and music cognition to see what we can apply to music. We look into the work of the german psychologist Wolfgang Köhler who is credited with the creation of the Kiki/Bouba effect, spatial music perception and linguistic cognition work of Felix Faire and some of my own crackpot theories about how there exists a trend for all musicians to interpret shapes as music in the same way. We go through a brief history of graphic scores in order to try and understand the relationship between shapes and sound, and gleam insight into graphic score interpretation. Somewhere along the way we conduct an experiment where we borrow the popular "4 producers flip the same sample" format, but instead it's "3 musicians interpret the same graphic score". We then analyze each of our interpretations of the same score by breaking down the music theory, harmony, rhythms, and timbres between each of our individual interpretations. Huge thanks to MAYSUN, Julian Schoming, and Krispy for participating in this sound design interpretation challenge/experiment. It was a blast! and hopefully we shed some light on the effect linguistics has on music, and the effect shapes has on sounds. Links to everyones stuff, and the research I sited will be down below.
