There isn't a strict enough rhythm to this girl's "Amazon Wishlist" of a statement. I did however get a feeling of "Smooth Criminal" from the initial rhythm, and can't get that out of my head. Thank you for giving me something to irritate my brain for the next few days.

I've seen many examples of remixes being done with acapella vocal samples where phrasing of the vocals just doesn't line up with the rhythm of the song. I think many of these bedroom producers are just not paying enough attention. As long as the vocals are "in time" with the music they think it's fine.
@shteevuk11 сағат бұрын
I heard the 1 on 'looking'. I get completely that "finance... trust fund... 6'5... blue eyes" forms a repeating phrase, but in dance music, we're very used to hearing vocal samples running over a track which do not conform to 4 bar phrases, often because they've been sampled from non-musical sources, like movies.

All this video says to me is that people don't understand meter and strong / weak pulses, lmao. Half the folks sounded like they were talking about the offbeat where a snare or clap would hit when referring to the "one", even clapping as if it was the off beat, while the other half just argued the same metric structure but starting from different points in the meter which would/could all be "the one", depending on BPM or time signature, i.e. 2/4 vs 4/4, or 4/4 at 90 BPM vs 160 BPM in the click, which can both 'sound' like the same speed or pulse (just changing the way it is notated in sheet music or piano roll, and facilitating more granular percussion w/ drum machines and synths by essentially increasing the effective metric resolution by cutting the length of each bar (thus allowing twice as many pulses per bar from a DAW/midi perspective.

It’s definitely nothing to do with “knowing what a pickup sounds like” as there is a pickup either way. One way it’s “I’m looking for a man in”, and the other way it’s just “I’m”
@fromchomleystreet21 сағат бұрын
I find it difficult to believe anyone would naturally hear those words on off-beats. But if you want to imagine a version where the “one” is actually on “I’m”, there is no pick-up at all, and both “looking” and “finance” fall on off-beats, put her words to the music of “who’s afraid of the big, bad, wolf”, where “I’m” falls on the “who’s” beat, “for” falls on the “…fraid” beat, “in” falls on the “big” beat, and “…nance” falls on the “wolf” beat. I’M looking FOR a man IN fi-NANCE.
@Tony_Westcliff21 сағат бұрын
I can't hear it as anywhere but on "Finance". The "I'm looking for a man in..." works so well as a lead in over a pregnant pause.
@fromchomleystreet22 сағат бұрын
It never would have occurred to me in a million years to place the “one” on “finance”. But now that I’ve made myself hear it your way, I can’t STOP hearing it your way. Her structure actually does lend itself to hearing the one on “finance” because then there’s a neat repeating two-bar loop that goes “finance, trust fund, six five, blue eyes” and then returns to the beginning of lyric phrase, “finance”, on the “one” of the third bar. With the “one” on “looking”, on the other hand, the lyric loop gets out of sync with the bars.

It sounds nothing like an EDM song - it sounds exactly like a nicki minaj song. When I first heard it, I thought she was just reading out some random nicki lyrics. It sounds exactly like a verse from "Super Bass".

There can't be a debate or a definitive rule over that and similar musical problems in order to establish where is "The definitive 1". More visual representation of such problem would be if you have the number 9696 written on a piece of paper and two people are watching that paper from the oposite sides of the table. One person is seeing clearly 9696 as the other person is seeing 6969. Both people can argue as much as they want, but there will be no definitive winner in the debate because the outcome depends on the point of view, they both are wrong and right at the same time. In the case of a music related problem like that one, it's even more complex because there is whole another dimension into the equation called "Creativity" which totally excludes the possibility to treat that example as a musical problem in the first place.

I can't think of a dumber clip to make a song out of. Maybe that's the point, but to me it's just so cringe that i would NEVER want to bang my head to this idiot. I hate you for putting this "music" in my conscious awareness🤮 Jk.. but no really😉 Can't people just find some new Alan Watts or George Carlin or something. Those guys had rhythm and actually had something meaningful to say. Or just some good ol' Anchorman quotes... That I'll bang my head to. Also, I'm a drummer who has used a metronome on occasion, so none of this surprises me. But it is still a good video!

I has an electronic artist remix my song which has a lot of 7/8 and 9/8 in there ... and he made 4/4 out of it. It is still a extremely weird remix for me but others do not have that impresson of the remix ... I also was booked for a studio session as a singer and the vocals of the chorus started on the 4, later in editing they cut it differently that it starts on the one. I was shocked about how awful it sounded but nobody else noticed it

Finance is 1 ... there is the weight of the phrase, you can do everything else too but i don't think it fits to the actual vocals because she "sings" it that way
@okaydoomer533Күн бұрын
I can explain why I'm wrong but I won't change my mind: word "finance" starts sequence that is rhythmical, words easily lay on beat, while "I'm looking for a man" is not perfectly chopped, it's more of a jazzy timing, starting count with that part for me is just unnatural, cause for me it sounds like what Alex Turner does live a lot, he doesn't start line when he should, like on the recoed, instead he does it later, but say it faster, changes emphasys and ends around beat 4 and before beat 1 of the next line and musical phrase, so that's why for me "finance" is a beat 1 Of course, it works that way without music laid, with this done like in examples I did feel that 1 is on "looking" and I agree

@@pinkmouse4863 well it doesn’t really, that’s the point of the video: different people will intuitively hear it differently based on their experience and genre, which gives us insight into how humans perceive downbeat and a good case study into the criminally understudied topic of metrical thinking.
