Moving to different countries there will always be a culture shock. Culture shock is not a bad thing, and should be viewed as normal! Before I moved to Serbia I had watched fellow KZfaqrs regarding culture shocks and learned a few in advance, none of which I mentioned.
Serbia is my home. Learning the language is difficult but I am working on it. I have been here since Dec 1st, 2022, so please be patient with me, my pronunciations may not be great, but I promise you, I am working on it!
Many people have the wrong idea about Serbia. I was one of those people prior to meeting the man of my dreams. It is funny how life changes, and you end up somewhere in the world you would have never imagined, and I could not be happier.
With all moves comes headaches and issues, but it is how you handle it which dictates your success.

Beautiful family!! I can totally see your kids being extremely popular with boys and girls as kids love other kids that seem a bit more unique, exotic looking and/or who speak a different language or have an accent. My son has the same "issue" here in his private school in Novi Sad being the only American lol. Your husband cracks me up as he looks exactly like me as far as his body language goes and not wanting to be in the video! Also, it's a strange feeling we get when we see our (foreign) wives and kids here discuss something or get excited about something it's so normal for us since we are from here and they are not, it's hard to explain. But anyway, he was a trooper to stick with you guys throughout the video and thus showed a great support! Excellent video, a wonderully done intro that reminded me of some sitcoms! Great job!

Only after I moved out of Serbia was I able to see many of the positives about our country. Eventually it lead me to re-think my decision to leave. Particularly when it comes to raising kids there are some serious disadvantages of living in the USA or in case of this family Canada. I fully understand their reasoning to leave. I've done the same. Thank God, my family was able to make that huge step.

Great kids! I hope they didn't mind too much being in front of the camera 😄. I completely understand that they miss familiar fast food places, like McDonald's or Little Cesar's. Serbia doesn't have that many chain style fast food, but they should have plenty of small food shops! When I visit Serbia or Bosnia, I go to these types of shops every day to try burek or different types of croissants, and buy freshly baked bread. And I hardly ever eat American fast food. I think the kids will enjoy Serbia more with time and as they relax and gain confidence. You just got there. Cultural shock and adjustment is normal for such young age. Once they are older and start going out, they'll understand how much more freedom they have in Serbia than in Northern America. Of course, learning the language will help with feeling more like at home. It can get frustrating and tiring hearing people talk and not know what they are talking about. Take care! 🖐️😊

Сјајан видео. Деца су веома васпитана, а имена су у Србији увек "посрбљена" и то је део нашег наслеђа. Great video. Kids are so well mannerd, and the names are always "serbed" in Serbia beacuse it is part of our tradition. Xavier is not a name that entered in Serbian via Englesh so ve say Havijer when we read it. It came from Spanish so we picked it as Havier as in Mexico (Mehiko). But if you SAY your name we will write it as you said it Gzejvijer or Egzejvier...First rule of Serbian Write how you say and read how it is written. Your familly is darker but not that dark and even if you were it would not matter to Serbs. Good luck on your journey in our beautifull land.

This is misleading and not a rule at all. It especially has nothing to do with our tradition. In my own school I had one girl from China and one which was African American. We never "serbed" their name because you cannot change somebody's original name so much that it doesn't even sound like the original anymore. Especially the example with "Gzejvijer" or "Egzejvier" which is ridiculous. For example I am originally born in Zell am See Austria and I am Serbian, but nowhere in my paperwork does it say ZEL AM SE, because it is incorrect. In German you read Z as a S, and Z as C. That is why you write places and names always in the original form with a reason, or both in original form and cyrilic.

@jeboshifru
@jeboshifru Жыл бұрын
@@sanjadjukic1452 You're both wrong :D My name is not written in the original form in my Passport, because there is a "c" instead of "c" at the end. In our Geography books is written "Frankfurt na Majni", and in Music lessons, we learn about Volfgang Amadeus Mocart. The West only pretends to "respect" other cultures when they write names in their "original" forms. Because, when I ask an Austrian "Do you write Arabic names in their original Arabic form, and Japanese names in Kanji, Hiragana or Katakana - their answer is by default "no".
@sanjadjukic1452
@sanjadjukic1452 Жыл бұрын
@@jeboshifru But if you're isn't and mine is that can't mean that I am wrong. Because these documents are serious documents and they wouldn't for sure make such a mistake. Obviously they may have changed the rules in the meantime or something. Also, nobody said that other countries write let's say Japanese names in the original form. But we in Serbia use both cyrilic and original name, or we do our best to simply call someone the closest to their original name. Gzejvijer is just a bad example and nobody would say it like that for sure. :D

And let me add that not everything is so great, we have a lot of peer violence in Serbia, pay attention to that as well as bad kids who drag other kids into the world of drugs, so you know it's a global problem in the 21st century And since you listed so many food and sweets 🤤😂 Try to start it here, you would be the first, and of course you would attract a lot of customers and that's it. It is normal that kids miss Canada, it's very natural. It is obvious that kids are for now not that much happy here in Serbia. Which is also expected, as they've been adjusted for Canada. Maybe with time, they would build great life here in Serbia, or eventually would get back to Canada. That depends on so many factors, such as would they fit into our specific society, would they make easily friends, love, relationships in every way possible etc. but in either way, wish you all a good luck...

Well, you got a sub from me, first of all welcome home, second its lovely to see the kids adapting, Serbs as you may have noticed are very tied to their history and roots, here the kids are just Serbian, you became Serbian as soon as you got married, and your kids are Serbs, skin color is not relevant, its the "who your grandfather was" mentality, i am happy to see our people return to their homeland, i u really do hope many more return, also your sons name in Serbian is spelled "Ekzavijer" Cyrillic "Екзавијер" The pronunciation is not the same as in English, but that would be the correct way to say it in Serbian.

About the mispronunciation of Xavier, some people will take the Mexican pronunciation which is "Havier". I once had an argument with someone about that while watching some movie, and even when the character themselves said "Zavier", they told me "he doesn't know how to pronounce his own name" lol. For the board games being translated in serbian, I guess that kinda makes sense haha, it's also a good way to learn language. Another good way to learn language is to watch TV shows

It is far away both in negative and positive sense. But unlike these people who made the move, you obviously can't understand it. Read maybe about hidden graves in catholic schools in Canada... Indigenous children's graves. Or how many pedophiles per square mile...

Dear friend. I am searching school for my 6 years old daughter but private schools are so expensive. Do you have advice for us? I think public schools not for her because of language

My kids do not speak Serbian but I put my kids into the public school this year, and they prefer it much more than the private school. If your child is 6 there will be no issues for your little one to pick up the language. Just put your daughter in a public school here... She will do great

This is rather an American thing, to change your original name because you cannot pronounce it, and than write it in whatever way you want. We donßt have a word for spelling, though, because we don't need one: we have phonetic writing system, where each sound match exactly one letter, and each letter represents one sound. We're not changing other people's names, we are just writing down what we hear. Nicknames are a different story. We do tend to give nicknames to everyone. And that is mostly a Serbian nickname. If your kids go to Serbian school, their names will be written in Serbian - because official script for all Serbian official documents is Cyrillic. No worries, though, your children's names will still be pronounced as they are, only with a strong Serbian accent. Your son would be Ksavijer in Latin script, or Ксавијер in Cyrillic script. Have in mind that English is hardly comparable to other European languages, and Serbian is. In no other language are letters a, e, i, o u, j, c, r pronounced as in English. The letter you call "j" is pronounced in the same way as in Serbian in most of European languages: German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Polish, etc. And most of non-native English speakers consider the English writing system to be complete and utter nonsense :D Learning Serbian will enable you to understand and learn other languages easier. ;)

True. Latin "Modus operandi" is pronounced the same in German, Italian, Russian, French, Serbian... but not in English. It was wrong from the beginning, and it became a norm. Further all the vocals are pronounced the same in all the above languages, and always the same. Not the case with English.
