ThatBoyConrad Genius cannot be identified through the lense of conventional means. It doesn't conform to established authoritarian constructs. There aren't really any established metrics for determining what is or isn't genius, especially in the arts. The fact that Nathan did well in school doesn't necessarily confer a high level of intelligence. School is a compulsory social construct for adolescents that was designed to measure learned subject matter by the cognitively average. It stifles the creative genius.

I think most of the business owners in the show are very much aware that the exposure they get by being in a TV production is worth going along with Nathan's antics. That doesn't mean that the whole illusion is broken but still. Now the craigslist people he hires and the characters he finds are remarkably weird and out there and often times so caught up in their own "performance" in a way that they don't even realise or care they are part of Nathan's. How the aspect of appearing like a normal TV program is used to lure people in and throw them off kind of reminds me of Eric Andre who's guests mostly come because they think it's a normal talkshow. I think both contain a lot of meta commentary about their respective genres and media as a whole.
@harryalimi7866
@harryalimi7866 6 жыл бұрын
The Eric Andre show is way more revealing in my opinion because people who come on his show are used to be filmed and the character they have construct for the cameras is totally broke by Eric. But when i see Nathan's show I see people who are not use to be filmed throw in this situation and I think about it like the people who are asked on the street to answer some general culture questions if they fail answering I don't assume that they are dumb, I think in the first place does the camera being point on them isn't putting more pressure on them which can explain their failure to answer so just the fact that normal people are put in front a camera and aware of it is already killing the authenticity for me they are nothing more than people putting an act for the camera in my eyes.
@krombopulos_michael
@krombopulos_michael 6 жыл бұрын
Harry Alimi I think most people on the Eric Andre show are more in on the joke though and are playing awkward or straight because it's what the show wants, kinds of like on Between Two Ferns. There's also some people who are clearly trying to up the weirdness themselves like Tyler The Creator or Chance The Rapper.
@harryalimi7866
@harryalimi7866 6 жыл бұрын
Michael you right about the one that knows who Eric Andre is, like Tyler The Creator or Chance The Rapper when you see them on the show things seems really scripted especially Chance. But when you see the case of Lauren Conrad whose publicist refused to send any more guest to the show because of what happened with her. It shows to me that the ones who doesn't know the Eric Andre persona are totally lost and the real them behind the character they have made up for the cameras start to show up and to me that's more real, it says and shows more about the human than people who knows Zach Galifianakis and act with him or the people on Nathan's show that keeps in the back of their head "don't look stupid there is a camera filming you be careful".

For me, "Nathan for you" is one of the best deconstructions of the modern TV medium and our relationship with it. I'm often surprised at how many people are genuinely fooled by the character he plays. The man is an gifted artist AND more importantly... a great business consultant!

I've never seen this show. This is the only time I've heard of it too. I started crying when he asked the girl to tell him him her loved him repeatedly. Right before, with you saying he longed for human connection, and the two things together just really stood out to me.

Terrific homage to a hilarious Canadian comuc talent. I think Bo Burnham and Nathan are a couple of voices for the "post-post-modern era" -- seeking to inspire and share hope and meaning to an audience that was close to giving up on those essential elements of human life. May they be recognized for their important, profound, touching, and often quite silly work! (I got here after the Wisecrack analysis of Bo -- great timing both of you!)
