Hoocho fails yet again. But the beauty of failure is that it allows us to learn from our failure and grow as a person...
...and no-one grows like Hoocho.
Hoochos explores the worlds of Hydroponics, Aquaponics, Permaculture, Homesteading, Fermentation, Technology Vanlife and DIY Builds to look at the world through a larger lens that can incorporate the best of everything into a rich and rewarding lifestyle.
Through self sufficiency we can reduce consumption and increase our hyperlocal household production.

It’s only through failure we learn. Keep up the good work and cudos for sharing ”failure” videos👍

I’ve always had pretty good results with Toms in a Kratky system in my garden in the UK. I manage 4 or 5 in one 20l box with canes stuck in to the lid for support. I must try Dutch buckets though, maybe in my garage with lights.

You must have been topping it up twice a day. I use chains and cable ties to support my tom plants, much stronger than any commercially available tomato clip.

Really appreciate these videos. To a large extent, my first season of outdoor vegetable gardening here in the New Mexico high desert at times seemed to consist of feeding the local wildlife population. Not much net yield of lettuce, tomatoes and chile peppers. Having better luck indoors so far this Fall. So many gardening videos focus on "perfect" results... It's good to see that one is not alone in the "learning by failure" mode you mentioned. Thanks for these entertaining and informative videos!

We did exactly the same thing, but indoors. We didn't have the pest problem but the root rot & fungus was bad. We now have a new batch in buckets with dowels supporting them. They are blooming now, can't wait to make salsa!

So happy to read or view your trials n tribulations in growing hydroponicly. I’m currently setting up the NFT system to grow tomatoes , iv already a large pieces of wire mesh setup for the tomato’s support. It’s gunna be a real feat in growing veggies up here in NW of WA. But like you I love a challenge.but Bunnings is about 600km away.

Thank you for your videos, A quick question. What if you use 6inch pipe and a line tied upwards to (i) provide more support and (ii) allow it to grow upwards?

I think you still need to support the pipes in the center, even if you only grow leafy greens in them. Those root systems were massive. The Dutch bucket system is decidedly better for your larger plants. Thanks for sharing.

Must of missed it in your earlier videos, but was wondering how often your pump runs. Is it continuous or do you run it x many times per day for the dutch buckets? Great videos :-)

Hey brother, looking good and it's a pain but have you tried the Florida Weave method for securing your plants? With the length of your runs, it may be beneficial to you. Love the channel

I think Guyra tomato farm uses a nft system in their extensive glasshouses and they grow a couple of semi loads a day. The plants are supported on a wire that is adjusted daily.

My DWC maters were growing well and ripening nicely, then today its 29 degrees F. w. t. f. On another note, I've been thinking about running my nft in shorter, 1 meter-ish pipes, and laying them pretty close to the ground, maybe knee height. Did you set up yours at that height to prevent animal access?

I am only a new tomato grower but Dutch bucket is the way to go with toms. They need to be grown supported up a wire. There are plenty of tube videos that show you. It works.

My friend worked on a farm for a few years. When my tomatoes were being eaten by caterpillars and things last year. He told me to spray the plants with water and a few drops of sesame oil and dawn soap. That stopped all the bugs and things from attacking my plants.

Great video. Are you in the temperate , sub tropic or tropical zone ? BTW, you were incorrect at 00:40 - . '...antechinus which is a local rat we have in Australia...' Antechinus are not types of rats or even rodents. They're tiny marsupials.

Just the yield is impressive Hoocho. The other stuff , well details..... One BIG question for you , and anyone that has ever grown Tomatoes Hydropinically : Have you ever grown a tomato ( hydroponically ) that actually tastes like a tomato ? Every single commercially grown tomato I have purchased , no matter what price point , has tasted like crap.

I grow mine aeroponically outdoors every year and they taste as good if not better than the ones grown in soil. The overpriced tasteless rubbish supermakets sell are completely different..

You can edit your timelapses with a script so you only show the daytime portions. If you export your movie to individually named images with the datetime in the filename you can use the filtering portion of the script on this page www.mikeyroy.com/2014/06/29/long-term-daytime-only-timelapse-on-android/ to automatically sort the images. Then you can import all the good images back in to movie editing software and merge them back to a movie.

The solanine of green tomatoes could cause harm to your chickens. You gave them quite a lot. Maybe it´s a good idea to research about it.
