Great progress! If oil on the floor is your only fail, you're doing just fine...

My mother had a 1971 GTV, which I learned to drive on. I love watching your videos! Just being reminded about all the quirks of these cars brings a smile to my face. Yes. the doors are super heavy and after a while don't close properly. I can remember the driver's door opening on hard turns as it was misaligned and wouldn't close properly unless you slammed while slightly lifting the door. Seeing the ground fly under my feet as I drove because there was a rust whole on the floorboard....lol

Sounds like a GTV! I actually have a 1970 GTV coming up on the channel soon!

I pulled the fuel tank out of the 911 without disconnecting the fuel lines and spilt fuel everywhere. That was a stupid one ;)

Another great video on one of my favorite car brands (in my favorite era). Congratulations on joining the global ranks of millions of mechanically inclined persons -- with big oil spots on the garage floor.

If you don't have oil stains on your garage floor are you really a car guy?

Another great video from you. Many thanks. I’m just about to remove the engine and potentially the transmission too from my spider on my drive. Glad I watched your video first or I’ll be very busy cleaning up the engine oil from the floor too!

My record (as a much younger man!) is 6 hours engine and gearbox out and back with a new clutch, working alone. Probably a bit less, because I was showered and driving again after 6 hours. A '66 Sprint GT, my first car. Things I did differently, left the exhaust manifolds attached to the rest of the system, detached the drive shaft at the rubber coupling, left the carbs in situ. I don't recall my car having that low down breather, because I didn't make that almighty mess that you did!

6 Hours is pretty good going!

Oops,what could possibly go wrong when you remove 105 engine without draining ALL fluids(including oil ) ?. Never mind, you wont be making this mistake again. I usually disconnect the steering cross arm because when removing 105 engines with gearbox in place, the upward front engine angle to make engine removal easy,means that the gearbox will push down on the steering arm if it has not been disconnected and removed. It's amazing how many people forget to remove the steering arm,resulting in one very bent arm. Great work Jethro,I enjoy your videos very much

Thank you for the tip on draining the oil first. I'm going to be pulling my Alfa Tipo 105 engine out of my '66 Morgan 4/4 tomorrow.
@JethroBronner3 жыл бұрын
Good luck with the work 👍 It’s really only the pre-1965 engines that will drop oil out of the breather when you lift them, so have a look at the back of the block and see whether it has a vent there.
@therealgaragegirls3 жыл бұрын
@@JethroBronner Thank you for the reply! Wow! Yes, my engine is out of a '64 Giulia Sprint GT (105.02) and has the breather on the rear of the block like you wrote--along with a tube that wraps around the front of the transmission and points toward the ground. Got the oil out today and all the ancillaries off. Too hot here in Seattle today to work in my garage (no AC and we're currently having a heat wave). I'd like to echo what another commenter wrote: You should DEFINITELY have your own TV show. Your knowledge of Alfas is amazing! And you are just so wickedly handsome. Your eyes. My goodness! ❤️

I recently purchased a 1975 Spider. My initial plan was to fix the rust and remove all of the gas engine components, and convert it to electric. After watching your videos I am second guessing myself. Lol.

I like to locate the head-bolt loop one row toward the front. This seems to make the center-of-gravity better for the withdraw. The trick is to keep the tail end as low as possible. Never had to disconnect the sway bar, though that seems like a good idea. The 105 engine is really a thing of beauty, from it's finned sump to it's twin cams. Lovely!
@JethroBronner6 жыл бұрын
modelleg thanks for the advice! I will give this a go when I pull the 1600 out of the Ti. Is it good for lowering engines back in?
@modelleg6 жыл бұрын
I like to use a rolling floor jack positioned to receive the rearmost transmission mount, from the rear of the car which is raised as high as practically possible. The jack guides the tail-end of the assembly and then you can raise it so all the gear-change bits can be reattached from inside the car. Before you attach the shift lever, you can refill the tranny with oil from the top as well, which is easier than using the standard aperture. Your videos are terrific and give people confidence to engage these terrific little cars.
@superchargerone6 жыл бұрын
Moving the engine strap helps move the centre of gravity of the whole set up further forward so the gearbox end drop even lower towards the ground. As for the tail of the car, do you mean to lift it as high as possible so that the engine assembly doesn't have to take on such an acute angle just to clear the bulkhead and helps clear the engine bay.

It's so much fun to see you restoring your GT while I'm restoring my 1970 GT Junior (stepnose also). I will start reasembling the car very soon. What sort of dampers will you use? Standard, Koni, Bilstein or others? Will you modifiy the engine? Thanks for the great videos and greetings from Switzerland!

I wasn't aware you could lift the engine and gearbox via that little bridge on the head. Is it really that strong?
@JethroBronner6 жыл бұрын
PieterA yeah it’s the factory lifting point for these engines, and the engines and gearboxes were installed as a single unit at the factory. I’ve never heard of one breaking?
@Vonstroke6 жыл бұрын
Good to know. I removed the head of mine for some valvework a few weeks ago, but never suspected that bit to be so strong.

Does the VIN on your car start with AR614?
@JethroBronner6 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Grant this car’s VIN is AR751942, which makes it a 1964 South African production car. I have a friend with another AR75**** Car, and it’s also a Sprint GT SA built.

Jethro Bronner the one I have which has a lot missing is a lhd built in Italy which is a very early production one of the first 500 built in Italy.

Jimmy Grant If your car is an Italian LHD car from 1964. The chassis number will be from AR 10502.600849 to AR10502.610615, so you car will be somewhere in between those enumber

I'd like to find a radiator drain valve that you can connect a hose to, and direct the antifreeze into a bucket. That stuff is toxic. So far I tapped the radiator for 1/8 pipe thread and got one of these, but you still cannot connect a hose to it. www.oreillyauto.com/detail/milton-industries-4292/hardware---fasteners-16585/brass-fittings-16690/drain-cock-17574/milton-industries-drain-cock/s6144/4460283

Me too - I liked it. What was the song, Jethro? Still continuing to massively enjoy these videos.
@perjanuschas80506 жыл бұрын
I think the music is quite good too, almost ambient, but you might try to master it lower, that would probably satisfy even Anders Olsson. It's a common mistake for many youtubers to master too loud, and then the music, whatever it is, snags all the focus, and it becomes annoying.
