How to Remove an Engine

Here's how to disassemble and remove an engine and transmission from a Toyota Corolla.
Removing the engine from most transversely mounted, 4 cylinder cars are quite similar.
In my case, I opted to disassemble major components off of the engine before removing the engine and transmission as an assembly, including water pump, alternator, starter, AC compressor, power steering pump, air intake, throttle body, radiator, AC condenser and exhaust manifold.
This allows a lot more room in the engine bay for removal. if your doing a straight engine swap, the removal of these components is not necessary.
Once the above mentioned components are removed, there are 4 engine mounts that hold the engine/tranny to the car body. The front and rear mounts are bushings with a thru bolt. They are secured underneath the subframe by 3-4 bolts.
The driver side tranny mount is also a thru bolt. However since the tranny is being lifted up, the mount must be removed from the inner fender. The passenger side engine mount is a vertically mounted bushing, and is typically left for last.
Strapping the engine was done with a thick heavy chain, around the engine. Seat belts were used across the driver and passenger side mounts for balance.
A shop crane was used to hoist the engine and transmission up over the car, and then the car was rolled back.
6 bolts hold the engine to the transmission at the bell housing. Once separated, the torque converter is exposed. It can then be unbolted from the flywheel beneath the access plate under the engine block.
The flywheel is then unbolted, and the engine mounted to an engine stand using the engine mount bolts.
This process was demonstrated on a 2001 Toyota Corolla with a 1ZZ-FE vvti engine.

speedkar99 I think they're getting better. Electric power steering looks like a much cleaner design. Electric cars even better, less moving parts, seals and fluids. But: in return we get millions of lines of software code we don't see, all virtually moving in a very complex dance, all made under pressure of product launch deadlines. That's where the problems of the future will come from, that and all those sensors.

I'm trying to swap a 1999 with a 2002 that is a mess. I guess I will need to swap the head of the 1999 with the 2002 because of the vvti. Can an engine swap be done without removing the ac refrigerant? I've never done this before.
@dabigboom8140
@dabigboom8140 8 ай бұрын
@bubbadoright9271 It might be possible, I had mine drained and removed the compressor before pulling it to have as much room as possible. But the compressor it only held on by 3 mounting bolts and the high and low pressure hoses. If you can pull the mounting bolts out and have the compressor supported by something so it doesn't hang from the lines, then theoretically, you might be able to pull it off without draining it. It's close to the bottom of the engine, and I dont think there's anything that would get snagged in that area when pulling the engine. You'd have less room to work with, but it should be doable. Just be careful and go slow. If anything doesn't feel right, just stop and check everything before continuing.

+modobomber Yes you can remove the compressor and leave it off to the side, just make sure it doesn't get caught up when hoisting the engine. Removing the drier and condensor gives you slightly more space in the engine bay to work though

That was a really good video. No extra bs just the info needed. I do have one question. Is it really necessary to pull the trans with the engine. Mine is an all wheel drive and I really don't want to have to remove all that crap. Plus it looks like there's enough clearance to get the engine out and in without pulling the trans.

Quick question, how much do you think this type of labor would cost? I want to get my engine pulled out but idk the average cost. Im thinking a out a shop or my friend in his backyard.

If he's an iffy friend or your gut says not to go with him, don't, if you choose a shop make sure you trust them or you get a referred by a friend that trusts them. If you can try to convince your friend to explain fully how this process works to you and walk you through every step.

Excellent vid but , seems like hard work , without proper tool some of it is impossible to do, but couldn't we just operate or do the overhaul without taking out the main engine block out?

Hello, I installed an engine and transmission together in my 2003 Honda Accord 4 cylinder, now I can’t get the car out of park. I must’ve did something wrong with the shifter cable when connecting it back to the transmission and the gear shifter. If you know how I can adjust the cable , can you share your insight please Thank You

perhaps it's a stupid question but i'll ask it anyway=) how did you make sure none of the bolts sheared off? i had that happen to me once but fortunately it was it was only one of four bolts holding down the back seat.

Rust is a killer. PB blaster helps, but I do shear bolts. This car was scrap so I wasn't concerned.

@itsjiraheta
@itsjiraheta 5 жыл бұрын
nevermind, you used a 2-ton Foldable Engine Crane the one that home depot sales, but you used 1-ton setting and the Engine stand is a 750 lb stand.
