The “history” of this event is so great. Russia, had just flung open the doors to the world. Metallica was the biggest band, and they had to entertain the masses.

As an American or a westerner you couldn't imagine what it must have felt like for those fans. A new dawn of freedom and with rock n roll and heavy metal being such a fun high energy genre, those fans had the attention of the gods. A singular event in human history. I've never been that into Metallica but my heart bursts with joy watching this performance.

It was a free concert. The reason there's so many different outfits amongst the attendees is because there were these massive street protests against the Soviet leadership. Molotov cocktails being thrown at tanks etc. just days leading up to the concert itself. It wasn't just Metallica, but also ACDC, Motley Crue, Pantera, and other local bands. The excitement wasn't just for Metallica, but the sense of freedom the people were feeling to have less control over them and the ability to host foreigners, especially Americans and their rock bands. Those helicopters were there, in part, to attempt stopping "rioters" from within the crowd through their loudspeaker, because they had never seen moshpitting before. Sometime during the festivities and difference band performances, the soldiers themselves began ditching their duties and joined the crowd.

That's because metal and hard rock embellish their guitars and bass guitars with distortion and overdrive pedals throughout their songs. These pedals transform the normal string sounds to a bigger, more full and grittier sound
