Hot diggity damn, it finally happened. A video about a very obscure niche thing that actually concerns me. I remember the 8 years of research I did before daring to purchase my first Indy hat. And to this day I think that I might have been too hasty. Another fun rabbit hole concerns the second-most iconic item of Indy's gear: the whip. Trying to find the perfect whip to complement a full Indy ensemble did indeed result in me learning how to make quality whips from scratch. I started learning around 16 years ago, and I'm now at a point where I'm reasonably satisfied with the results. Plus, I got to do some fun custom orders for my friend who works as a dominatrix. Thanks for being so sympathetic towards us weirdos, Gabi. We love you back!

Hey just wanted to say amazing video! I’m unfortunately one of those fans who care way too much about the hat history. I did want to say that Indygear is a great resource but it hasn’t been fully updated in a little bit so some of the pages don’t have the most recent info. A couple years ago Herbert Johnson got a new hatter, Michelle, who spent a lot of time sourcing hats from Mr. Swales during the raiders era in order to recreate the perfect Raiders hat and match weight and color of the felt. So Herbert Johnson is now back on the map and now considered THE place to get a hat among most Indy fans again.

As an enjoyer of Quentin Tarantino’s movies (not a “fan” but I’ve loved every movie I’ve seen from him). He’s definitely a weirdo. I don’t think anyone is denying that. But his film expertise is pretty unmatched for any famous director. Not just techniques, but knowledge of movies in general. He’ll pull some kind of style/editing/technique from some obscure 50’s Swedish B movie he saw as a kid and use it in a film he’s working on. Great director. Does not always mean great person.

I remember at the Great Movie Ride at Disney World, there was a fact about Raiders that they purposely had Indy never lose his hat because the 1940s serials usually had heroes' hats stay on during any fight or action scene. There was also something about how it was considered to be poor taste for a gentlemen to be without his hat. Also respect to Gabi for being able to make a video about Indy and not resort to being one of those idiots that goes "hur dur there's only 3 films. What 4th film? To be honest, you could do an episode on every part of that iconic costume. The whole costume is true in that at a glance, it appears like something you could find anywhere, but every article of clothing is not like anything you'll find in any store. There's even a story on why the boots wound up being the boots used. It's good that there's nerds and enthusiasts for genres of all kinds. Sometimes, those are the very people productions turn to when things would have otherwise had their history lost to time.

I macramed a rainbow band for it and wore it often One night I'm sitting on the front porch of a friend talking with their neighbor (fellow on spectrum) about how much I adored Tom Clancy's books, which turned to him mentioning that Ford was his favourite actor. This prompted me to run in, grab the hat, ahow him the Indy logo and give it to him. His face absolutely lit up as he put it in his head and rode off on his oversized tricycle to show it to his mom and sisters. He was so happy to have it and so proud to show it off.

The whole Indiana Jones fandom is rather unique. It spans generations, all nations, and all walks of life, and engenders a very deep love of the franchise, yet there isn't that much media to consume or that much merchandise compared to something like Star Wars, so you get people who are super into all of it and know everything about what little there is. These people often have high priced replicas (usually a collection of the artifacts) or real props displayed, they collect and replicate super detailed clothing from the films, and they have an encyclopedic knowledge of not just the films and their productions, but also all the novels, comics, the tv show, video games, and toy lines. They have the amount of love the most devoted fans of large franchises have, but it's focused on a much smaller area of culture. They also make a staggering amount of fan films, of varying quality. They train with whips in their backyards, just in case they ever have to swing across a canyon or disarm a gunman. They're dedicated, and I see hat specific posts almost every day.

Great video! I'm one of those nerds too, and loved the mention of the site! Brilliant stuff! The hat for Dial of Destiny isn't AB sadly though, it's back at Herbert Johnson this last time out! And they did a really good job on it! Steve has retired and the director chose to take it back to the source, now that HJ have a superb block and a great hatter to nail the details! (She's a great person too!)

I am from Indiana and my last name is literally Jones. I have been obsessed for quite some time, with the franchise. I was lucky enough to live in Los Angeles from 2006 to 2009, where I stumbled across a shop the Iguana Vintage Shop, where I bought a Bailey brand Fedora. They had been in business since 1922. I had combed the Universal Studios shops and basic halloween shops for his hat. The only difference in my hat is a hemmed edge. I paid $40 for it in 2010, and it is still everything to my costume. I loved this episode, and was geeked to find out the super fans ended up making the hats for the movie. Stay nerdy my friends!! But for real if you are in LA visit the Iguana store as they get costumes off the Hollywood lots all the time. I wore my hat while watching this episode.

If you'd like to have a very close copy of the Fedora, I recommend Miller hats. It's offered in several colors besides brown. Differing shaping is also available. The "poet" hats in the UK are $400-$600. If you look at photos from the '30s to the '50s, nearly all men wore Fedoras. If a man was seen without his hat, it was assumed he'd either lost his hat or his mind. Humphrey Bogart was probably best known for his Fedoras before Harrison Ford. Watch "Casablanca".

This is a great video. I am a huge fan of the Indy films and have always noticed that the hat changed over the films. It made sense to me because hats wear out. He even had various whips for each film. However... you pointed out facts I had no idea. I am now subscribed and ALSO think your dad should suggest more vids for you. Thanks for the info.

Nice. As one of those guys who used to discuss the specifics of the hat on the forums with members like Delk, and have made and sold dozens of Indy's over the years I'm glad you explored this. Just a note, though, it has come out since the release of the movie that Herbert Johnson had once again supplied the hats for Dial of Destiny. Slightly different color, ribbon, and taper than previously, but you'd have to be insane to notice.

I had always thought that the gag of Indy's hat never falling off was a wink & a nod to the old Republic serials where, similarly, no matter what sort of fight was going on, nobody's hat ever fell off. And this was due to the fact that the hat was there to hide the stunt doubles being swapped in and out from shot to shot. They didn't have the time or money to find a stunt double the would resemble the actor being doubled, so.. put on the hat and keep your head down.

I would suggest that one reason Indy's hat is so much more iconic than the earlier examples is that those movies were made in an era when men wearing that type of hat was not a big deal; looking at crowd photos from the 1940's and earlier, most men are wearing some type of hat when outdoors. It wasn't till the 50s that this started fading, and by the sixties where it became the exception. So when the character became a pop-culture icon in the 1980s it's not surprising that people immediately made the fedora emblematic of the character.

Great insight and video! Adventurebuilt Hats made two Fedora hats for "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" a brown one and a grey one that Harrison Ford wears in the movie. Herbert Johnson / Swanes of London made all the other Indy hats for the other movies and the "Dial of Destiny", and claim so on their site. Many of the changes in the hats came from Harrison Ford's placing of the hat, slightly turned with the bow towards his eye, and his repinching of the Bash in Raiders of the Lost Ark, to the amount amount of sweating Ford was doing in the Cairo scene which caused the hat to bulge on his right side.

I think the hat he wears on the steps of the government building at the end of the movie, is the grey travel hat that he wears earlier on the plane journey to Nepal. How he got that hat back from there is a mystery too. Perhaps he just gets people around the world to mail his stuff back to himself. 😃

I am also one of these super-nerds. The hat I settled on is the one HJ supplies now, and that's only a very recent thing, thanks in part to fan demand and interest. They built a new block as close as they could to their original, sourced a rabbit felt as close to the original and dyed it in as close to the original color they had used then...all thanks due to the efforts of the nerds that cared that much for the hat. The provenance of getting a hat from the original makers in as close to the original as possible...it can't be beat. If you want to go in another similar direction much like the fandom surrounding this hat, you should look into the fandom around the original mask used for Halloween (1979).
