And then tattoo gate is drama surrounding a tattoo artist who scams people my charging for a consultation fee, between $1,200-$6,000 CAD for a design fee (still not doing a design properly despite being provided reference photos), then more for corrections to the design, a deposit of $800 for the appointment, then on top of all of that the cost of the tattoo work (which is quoted as one price and then she changes it to an hourly rate when she doesn't finish the tattoo on time because she starts it 2-3 hours late despite the client being there on time.

Banana fact: It is illegal to import bananas in Australia. Yes, because of the Panama disease. There are multiple varieties of the Panama disease, some of which can infect Cavendish and Lady Finger varietals. In Australia, because of our hatred of foreign bananas; the spread of the sequels has been thus far fairly isolated and contained.

But she made some errors in the video. Bananas weren’t genetically modified. They were found after they had a mutation, THOSE are the bananas that can’t grow by themselves. The original bananas with seeds grow perfectly fine. Also she didn’t mention that the cavendish is falling victim to the same destiny that the Gros michel fell to. That’s the Panama disease. The cavandish is right now in danger of becoming exting just like before, since people forgot, that fungi evolves too and can destroy, formally „resistent“ species.

I’d prefer to not have had my country and people pillaged and desecrated, and still have to deal with the effects of colonialism today. Pre-colonial indigenous people were not all savage and cannibals and colonisers were not all the bastions of civility you think they were. The effects of colonialism that you’re conveniently ignoring include spread of virulent diseases, unequal social relations, exploitation, enslavement, endangering or obliterating native languages and practices, marginalisation, etc. All of which have affected or are still affecting colonised nations. We are not thriving now as a direct result of colonialism, my guy.

Hmm, but cavendish is on the way out. So, what do we update it to? Maybe we can jump ahead and update it to the banana that is coming next. Hopefully they got the next banana lined up already.

I adore banana-flavored candy, and regret that I haven't had a chance to taste a Gros Michel (they are still grown, just in small batches - not easy to get in the US). The takeaway here, for me, is that relying on a monoculture has potentially disastrous downsides. It happened with Gros Michel and Fusarium wilt in the first half of the 20th Century, and we are now experiencing a much-delayed Round 2 with a new, improved strain of that Fusarium species, Tropical Race 4, making its way through and killing off plantations of the formerly-resistant Cavendish cultivar that makes up most modern banana production. There is currently no real Plan C to replace Cavendish -- and even worse, TR4 also destroys plantains, which are a staple food in many parts of the world. It's looking likely that the solution will be genetically engineering resistance into both plantains and bananas, but that comes with its own issues. So yeah, the new epidemic is already underway, and has been since around 1989. This time around, it's going much more slowly due to better awareness of such things, but it's going, and it will have to be dealt with eventually.

It's interesting that for something like Apples, there's such variety (Green, Fuji, Jonagold, McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Cosmic Crisp), while bananas are such a monoculture (Gros Michael in the past and Cavendish now).
