Planet of the Daleks is a fantastic Dalek story from the Jon Pertwee era, but it is mired by a glaring problem with one of its Dalek props - a problem that a future Special Edition release should really fix.
All footage is the property of the BBC. Music by Jamie Robertson and Frank Klepacki

I can easily overlook every other production issue with the story, but not this one. It seems like it could have been easily fixed with a retake or by checking the wiring of the prop

@@dalekbumps TBH, this is the same TV production that (apparently) never bothered to write down the frequencies for the ring modulators, with the result being that the Dalek vocal effects varied more than the Doctor's regenerations.

Something else that should be addressed. I think the torch on the eyestalk was supposed to be encased with a ball to make it less obvious that it was a torch, but wouldn't you know it, the ball was lost with all the parts swapping and theft that whether on behind the scenes.

My understanding is there were multiple issues leading to this situation, one was that the first Dalek borrowed from Terry Nation got stolen meaning another had to be hastily prepped, there were only two experienced Dalek operators available so a new guy was inside it, and the film crew was too pushed for time to do reshoots.

While I also find the out-of-sync lights and light-up eyestalk irritating, the Dome itself was another prop issue that stood out to me. When the Dalek Supreme turns to look the dome seems to wobble and giggle.

I also think that we should have seen more of the dalek since it only appeared in one part we should have known more about the dalek like its history what it’s done and its relationship with the emperor before he was destroyed but apart from the flaws of the supreme dalek planet of the daleks is one of my favourite classic who episodes.

The unsynched lights are annoying, as is the tendency for the dome to ride up at the left hand side when it rotates. It's interesting that things that I would fix before doing a silly little KZfaq video were left in for the production of the original series. They really were pushed for time and budget when they made those episodes.

Another thing that bugged me about the dalek supreme or rather the figure release of it is while the actual prop had no mesh under shoulder panels and thiner gaps between said panels, the figure was given mesh under the panels and the gaps between were wider like a standard dalek. Side note it also bugged me how the Blu-ray of planet of the daleks didn't add beam FX to the daleks or Thal guns like in the remastred version of Day of the daleks

For me it was the jaring movement of the supreme dome that got me. From what I have learnt the CGI was originally never meant to be done and wasn't budget. I actually attempted to try and fix the dome lights myself, but then I'd have the issue of a glow around the eye emminating from nothing which I couldn't fix, and flares on the camera also emminating from nothing which I also couldn't fix, so its an issue that editing can be very tricky to try and fix.

The dome lights not matching the dialogue is a rather common issue, but the reason it's so apparent in this story, is because the Dalek voices aren't unique enough to tell which one is speaking without looking at the dome lights.

@dalekbumps

It's an interesting idea, but I reckon Lindy and the others died not long after they left Finetime, there's no way they would be able to survive in the wild on their own
@mh6944
@mh6944 Ай бұрын
@@dalekbumps Fair point. Alternatively the Finetimers were sent away by ultra-wealthy Kaleds/Thals (probably the latter given Lindy's appearance) very early on in the Thousand Year War to preserve some level of purity. The seeming population wipeout of the Homeworld (Skaro) was one of many regressions of technology ("At this rate they're going to finish off with bows and arrows.") that happened throughout the course of the War, which is why the AI couldn't detect any life forms. It doesn't fit exactly, but it suits the racial supremacist ideologies of the Finetimers, as well as Lindy's use of Dalek-like phrases ("You Will Obey Me!")

It’s definitely an irritation, but far from the biggest hamper on my enjoyment. For me, it’s the lazy writing. Not to say it’s bad, if taken in isolation it’s incredibly enjoyable to watch, it just doesn’t have an original bone in its body and is perhaps the worst example of Terry Nation’s complacency in his Dalek stories. I just can’t get through it without being taken out of it over and over again with reminders that I’m just seeing a rehash of ideas that worked before, thrown together in a soulless collage with very little identity of its own. But seriously, I do still like the story.
@GrilloTheFlightless

Very true. Dr Who companion gets lost in a forest and is given medical aid from a creature in a funny cape. Thals wandering around a forest with Daleks in an underground base. Peaceful Thals with one unusually hot headed Thal and one who questions his own bravery. Climbing inside a Dalek shell to aid an escape. Pushing a Dalek onto or into something that stops it from working. The Doctor being sick and out of it for some of the story. Daleks plan to wipe out everyone else on the planet with a powerful weapon. It’s all really familia stuff. All it needed was a character called Tarrant and it would have been the perfect Terry Nation story! He was great at coming up with initial ideas and concepts, but his writing wasn’t great. It’s a poorly kept secret than his stories had to be heavily licked into shape by scripts editors, but there was a clause in his contract that they could only use the Daleks if he wrote the script or approved an alternative script writer, so they were lumbered with it.

Planet of the Daleks is rough, especially right after Frontier in Space. It has its moments, but it's honestly not that much better than Death to the Daleks. I don't hate the Supreme design, but I was surprised when you said it was a fan favorite. The lights were distracting, sure, but what was worse imo was the wobble of it's cap/dome/head/whatever as it swiveled around. The lights wouldn't be as much of a problem if Michael Wisher wasn't voicing every Dalek (Roy Skelton played one of the invisible guys, but I don't remember if he voiced any Daleks in this one). I'd vote to leave it as it is, as a historical reminder of how not to do Daleks. Had a good cast, though, including Bernard Horsfall as one of the Thals.

It's always been a personal favourite of mine, I understand why people dislike it as it is without a doubt: - at least two parts too long - riddled with production issues - stocked with generic, similar-looking and (for the most part) interchangeable Thal characters - afflicted with the Terry Nation trope of "let's have the characters attack a base, retreat, attack the base again, get captured, escape, attack the base again, retreat again..." - basically a soft-remake of 'The Daleks' But regardless of all of that, I still enjoy watching this story, it's my go-to Doctor Who story to have on in the background and it's got some really great Third Doctor moments, like his conversation about bravery with the Thal in the prison cell, his reaction to thinking Jo is dead, and the part where he manhandles a Dalek into an ice volcano It's got problems and I don't blame people for ranking it quite low overall but I like it, in fact I really like all the Pertwee Dalek stories

@dalekbumps for Pertwee Dalek stories I've got to say death to the daleks is thr best of the 3. Its a brilliant story. But if you count frontier and space then it's Frontier in Space since that's my favourite Pertwee Episode.
