Love is not easy. It took work and effort on both of our parts to grow together. We've been through disapproving parents, cultural differences, gender rolls, children, buying a house, finance and all of that while on a med student and resident schedule. And I'm proud to say that we've made it out stronger than before.

Happy to see people working hard on their marriage. These days marriages just don't seem so sacred to some... the stories you hear, sheesh it's like even spouses come with a "return by" date. So many people do not have that level of commitment anymore.

My grandparents were married for almost 70 years, my grandpa used to beat the sh*t the out of my grandma and was incredibly abusive for their entire marriage. He stopped hitting her after their sons, my uncles, almost punched him out. So i say staying in unhealthy relationships is terrible, period. Is it worth it? yaa no.

My bare basic advice, as a daughter of a powerhouse divorce attorney, “as long as there’s no abuse (physical, addiction, etc) then divorce is not an option, Work it out, work on it, and don’t look for white picket fences!

Congrats on 100k Jenny!! I’ve been watching you since you’re early days when you’d long board you medical school and remember when you had to do long distance 😢 I recently read a paper about the high rates of divorce in medicine (especially in residency) compared across different specialties, it’s great to hear a more personalized point of view ❤️ thanks for making such great videos!!

One thing I learned from the break up with my high school sweetheart back in 2009 was this: “If you aren’t growing together, you’re going to grow apart.” We always have to keep in mind that we, as individuals, are constantly changing. The person we were last year most likely isn’t the person we are today, so we can’t expect our significant other to be the same person the whole time either. I found that this thought process definitely helps as the years go on 💝 ended up marrying my best friend, he knows me better than I know myself sometimes, and leaves space for me to grow. Friends 2009-2013 (we know each others exes and coached each other through relationships, it was odd when we first started dating!), dated 2013-2018, married 2018.

Sometimes being stubborn is the way a relationship lasts. My husband and I have been together nearly 18 years, married for almost 13. We’ve had our rough patches and because we are stubborn and don’t give up easily we pushed through the difficulties and we’re still together. We’ve sadly watched some of our friends, who were concerned about us when we hit our rough patches, go through divorces. I’m not saying they didn’t try to stay married and sometimes it is better to get out of a bad relationship but sometimes being stubborn is the only reason a relationship will work.

I often joked to my husband (then boyfriend --> fiancee) that he needed to join a "husband of doctors" support group! I'm so lucky that he met me in my first year of med school and we've been together since my third, all through until now (just about to fellow). Communication has been key, as has talking frankly about expectations and future planning! Respect and learning one another's love languages has also helped a LOT

Hi Dr.Jenny. I stumbled upon your channel and I how you're incorporating your life as a mom/wife but also showing us your life as a doctor. It's been very eyeopening to see that doctors aren't all unapproachable. Watching this video has inspired me to give more to the world and my significant other. I highly believe in karma and i think the energy you give out is the same wavelength of energy you get back. It gives life a meaning and how to act accordingly for a better life. great video!

This was very insightful. When you said that both need to have common goals, what goals should we cover, financial or career or marriage?
@drjennale
@drjennale 3 жыл бұрын
All of the above! For example: Stan and I agree that we both want financial independence ASAP (starting off my tackling my school debt) some people are not in such a hurry. We also agreed that I will eventually only work part time to raise the kids and he will work full time. We a both wanted to get married and have kids. Having differing goals in any of those aspects can cause a lot of conflict (if you’re unwilling to compromise).

You have a beautiful family, and you're doing a great job... I do think you way overthink things though... Relax your mind, take every day as it comes...don't over analyze everything, you'll drive yourself crazy.. You've been given a lot of gifts in life...high intellect, fertility and physical beauty, you're way ahead of the game...Enjoy your husband, not everything has to be deep, lighten up a bit. Good luck. I've been married 19 years, this is my advice. lol
@drjennale

Thank you. I am wound up pretty tight and Stan helps me not stress the little things. Still working on it! 😅 I think by saying intelligent, fertility, or physical beauty equates happiness perpetrates the misconception that if people have these traits, they’re feelings of depression or internal struggles are not validated. It’s easy to say - enjoy your husband. But it’s hard when one doesn’t enjoy themselves. Love, like every great thing in life, takes work.

Hey Jenny (Dr Le) 👋🏾 thanks so much for being open and honest with your experiences in your relationship. It was so refreshing to hear. My fiancé and I have been together for 4 years and now we’re setting up to go through a period of long distance because I am originally not born and raised in the US and have better job opportunities in my home country. I’m so nervous though because we have been together everyday for the past four years and we love spending time together/living together. Do you have any tips on how to navigate time apart? We’re gonna be continents apart.
@drjennale
@drjennale 3 жыл бұрын
Stan and I did long distance when I started medical school. Easier because we were in the same time zone and within the US. But we had to have that discussion - how long will this long distance be and when/where will be our permanent residence? In our distance we relied on trust, open communication about our feelings, FaceTime, and visits when possible. Sending you two our good vibes ❤️

Hello! I appreciate this video! I have a question. My boyfriend started med school and he lives 2.5 hours away from me now. I just am working at a typical 9-5. My question is he’s the one who’s not as good of a communicator, any tips for urging him or helping him to communicate more/better? Anything you tried with your husband?
@drjennale
@drjennale 3 жыл бұрын
We try to designate time several times a week just to talk. It was hard to do long distance in medical school because I was always busy studying but it was helpful to have someone understand that and be supportive. Stan also tried to visit me at least once a month (lived in different states) which was nice

Not relationship related but I just wanted to ask whether you are an introvert or extrovert, and your advice on how to cope in the medical profession being either one. I am an introvert and can be drained easily a lot of the times so I don't know whether going down this profession will effect my care.
@drjennale
@drjennale 3 жыл бұрын
I think it is important in every profession to learn how to refresh yourself when you’re feeling drained. Whether that be medication, exercise, watching a movie, writing, painting, praying. Medicine can be draining but it can also be very rewarding. I can’t emphasize enough - you need to take care of yourself before you can take care of others.

Stan and talked about where we wanted to live (since medical training took me to many different places), traveling the world when the kids got older. How we want to retire. But also the importance in everyday life like trying new foods, always learning, being goal driven and ambitious.

4 minutes into the video and i have to add first that i don't think the answers are that easy and it's normal for you to ask " is that it?" If anything, i think you can write a long essay down to the minute details on how to make a relationship work. For example, even just saying communication is key is such a wide heading in itself. For example, what is the right kind of communication? That both parties need to understand that honesty is key? But being honest causes hurt and both need to be accepting of that. Or both need to listen to understand instead of listening to be defensive or respond immediately. At the end of the day, you're dealing with another human being and we are complex to begin with. But no matter what, the hard work is worth it. Nothing great comes easy, really.
@drjennale
@drjennale 3 жыл бұрын
I use to think that if a couple love each other, “if it was meant to be” then things would be easier. Never expected some things to get as hard as it did but you are right. Nothing great ever came easy. And the grass is greener where you water it.
