Emperor Palpatine's plan to overthrow the Republic and eliminated the Jedi was decades in the making, but there were three self-manufactured crises he used to gain, consolidate, and keep his power.

I always had the same interpretation of those dreams too. The dreams were the seed that palpatine kept watering over the course of the film, leading to Anakins betrayel.

The only historical figure who really compares is Stalin. I don't know if he was a conscious model Lucas used, but the parallels are there. Neither man seized power: Both worked their ways up through the governmental/political apparatus. Both slowly built up networks of cronies, allies, pawns. Both worked behind the scenes as much as possible. Obviously, Stalin wasn't a space wizard with magic powers, but he was every bit Palpatine's equal when it came to intrigue, skullsuggery. And he also completely defeated his enemies.

Lucas is no doubt drawing from multiple historical influences, the immediate in his mind being Pres. Richard Nixon whom he saw as a would-be autocrat if allowed (remember, the Empire isn’t a literary stand-in for Nazi Germany or the USSR, but what he feared the US exemplified and was on the verge becoming during the Vietnam War-and though he denies it, his portrayal of the Sith and their affiliates often draw from others, such as Pres. Ronald Reagan, Speaker Newt Gingrich, Pres. George W. Bush, and VP Dick Cheney), though it’s undeniable that Hitler and Nazis are the aesthetic and cautionary influence (though I’m sure Stalin was partly in there as well). Not to mention the historical parallels drawn from dictators who transformed their respective republics into imperial dictatorships, namely Julius Caesar and Napoleon (as well as drawing from major civil wars, such as those in the US and Spain in particular). That said, the latter two dictators were also principally military leaders, which is not exactly Lucas’ focus as he was most concerned with dictatorships which arise from the corruption and indifference that metastasize within flawed and weakened democracies, for which he believed war/war profiteering (and their consequences on the social, political, and economic welfare of democratic societies) is the great cancer we all need to fight against to prevent before it’s too late.

6:15 as Mace Windu said himself in the ROTS novel, the attack on Coruscant was an Inside Job, catching the Jedi off guard and moving their attention to something else... stopping them from finding out who the Sith lord really is.

George himself said that Mace overpowered and defeated Palpatine. Using this defeat he played the so weak card with Anakin. Mace was that dude and alongside Yoda and Anakin were the only ones powerful enough to destroy Sidious.
@roguescoundrel
@roguescoundrel 10 күн бұрын
Ah didn’t know that. And yet still people will debate it despite what the person who wrote it said lol. I always liked to think he lost despite his best efforts. But he was prepared for the battle going either way. If he’d defeated Mace, he’d have found a way to use it to turn Anakin and obviously he did that when he lost.

Why do we debate that? Because anyone who watched the movie saw several places in the duel where one easy lunge by Palpatine could have ended the duel quickly.
@FriendlyBatDoom
@FriendlyBatDoom 9 күн бұрын
@@mikevanroy9356 because it's called poor editing. It happened to Anakin in AOTC when all of a sudden he deliberately opened up to get his arm cut off by Dooku. It happened to two of the Jedi Masters Windu came with as they literally did nothing but stand there as he stabbed them. George wanted as many close-ups as a duel. He was impatient and didn't use the trained stuntmen for Ian which is why the choreography wasn't good for that scene. The choreography for this scene was a victim of George's Poor decisions just like with "I Hate Sand" and Jar Jar Binks. With that being said It's still canon.

Palpatine is probably my FAVORITE villain in fiction because of this. For whatever reason the charismatic liar who uses religious/political means to attain power has always been my favorite villain architype (guess that’s why I like the characters is Dune so much. Also, if we got Halo 2’s original ending where the Prophet of Truth’s plan was perfectly coherent and tied into Forerunners being human instead of Halo 3’s dumpster fire “story” he’d be on the list of favorites).

Yeah. Just like you said in the video Palpatine was able to manufacture the crisis, and actually win. He only got taken down decades after the Jedi were almost stamped out, he got too cocky, and Vader returned to the Light to save Luke. Even though the Prequel are definitely a mixed bag they gave us more insight into who Palpatine is, what the galaxy was like before his takeover, and a wide array of cool expanded universe stuff set then (like the Plagues novel and the Revenge of the Sith novelization I NEED to read/listen to). Circling back to what I said about the Prophet of Truth, do you have any interest in Halo, or not really? If you do would you like me to talk about what Truth’s plan was in 2’s third act, and how 3’s story is a mess? If not that’s understandable.

In Halo 2’s original ending the Ark was located on earth in East Africa where modern humans first originated some 100,000 years ago, which just so happens to be when Forerunners disappeared from the galactic scene after firing the Array. A lot of the same things you’d later see in 3 like the Elites arriving on earth to help take out Truth, a mission where you’d fight some Scarabs, and the Arbiter confronting Truth before killing him. One of the big differences with the Arbiter confronting Truth is it would’ve been that he knew all along what the Rings would do, how they’d kill everything. In fact, that was his plan all along to wipe the slate clean. After learning this the Arbiter would be disgusted and in response removes his helmet and throws it on the ground, rejecting the title of Arbiter that Truth gave him. After killing Truth and deactivating the Rings the two would go separate ways with Chief fighting his way through a pack of Brutes, and the Arbiter would chase after Guilty Spark. The Arbiter would reach the Ark’s central chamber where a floating sarcophagus is in the middle and the room is sending out a signal. Some falling rubble from the Ark taring itself apart would crack open the case, and when the dust clears the Arbiter would look inside and see a humanoid skeleton who acted as the template for humanity (this being who’d been guiding our development was implied to be the Abrahamic god with the more mythical Bible stories like Noah building an Ark to save life from a coming Flood and God creating man in his image were recontextualized in Halo as symbolic retellings of Forerunner history and how they created us by molding hominids into a new “generation” of Forerunners). The Arbiter would then be mortified after learning the Covenant’s war of extermination was started to eradicate the children of their gods. He’d then grab onto Spark and they’d fly out the ceiling since their existence was blocked by rubble. Truth’s plan was to activate the Rings and use the Ark’s machinery to create a new species based on his genome, becoming God that way. In a way the Great Journey was very real, but only ONE could walk it. He had the other two hierarchs killed off the eliminate competition, and started the Great Schism to ensure the Covenant was too distracted with killing each other in a civil war to figure out what he was doing. While, all of this was happening he’d be safe beneath the Ark’s shield getting ready to start up the reseeding process in his image. He almost certainly would’ve won had humans and Elites not put aside their differences and worked together to take him down. By the end of this humanity would be free of the Forerunner’s influence, and the Elites would be free of the Prophet’s lies. Both species would then be free to go out choose their own destinies. Now that would’ve been an INSANE ending! It’s such a shame we didn’t get that in 3. Halo 3’s campaign was a tremendous amount of fun with a lot of really cool memorable set pieces, but the narrative was a mess. It’s abundantly clear that Bungie were just filling out a checklist of things that needed to happen, and put little to no thought into how they’d connect the dots (the terminals that Frank O’Conner DIDN’T write were genuinely interesting, and so were a few moments in the campaign. Unfortunately, in most cases it felt more like Bungie was just throwing stuff at the wall instead of making a natural progression of events). The absence of Joseph Staten and Jason Jones REALLY shows. Staten was writing Contact Harvest (a book that talks about first contact between humanity and the Covenant. One of the big reveals in the book is the part where the Forerunner ai Mendicant Bias reveals to the future Prophets that humans are the descendants of the Forerunners who were supposed to Reclaim(er) what their forefathers left them. This knowledge is what started the war because our existence invalidated the Covenant’s clean to be the true inheritors of the Forerunner’s technology/legacy, and the fact we were Forerunners who were “left behind” after the Rings were fired invalidated their belief in the Great Journey were all would be saved. If this EVER got out it would’ve torn apart the Covenant since everything they believed was a lie), and Jason Jones was on a long vacation since both men were burned out from Halo 2’s BRUTAL crunch. My ideal Halo would be a remake of 2 that gives us Bungie’s original vision, has improvements/content from later games, and throws in human enemies and Brute allies for some of the Arbiter’s sections. Sadly, that will NEVER happen.

how fast people forgot about the jedi was a plot point that always bothered me i'm sorry but you're not going to make people forget about a group that was that important for that long in 20 years. some aliens like yoda live for hundreds of years and even humans live to be 80. you're telling me they just all forgot?

Well, the Jedi were less forgotten and more so mythologized and then slowly erased. Even with how major of a role the Jedi had there were still only about ten thousand in a universe of trillions. It would probably be about the same chance as winning every lottery on Earth on the same day as it would be to see, let alone interact with a Jedi in the Star Wars universe.

@@whitetiana3022 I was off in saying there was trillions in the Star Wars Universe, as it is estimated to be around 400 Quadrillion. Which knowing about the Jedi order alone would be the equivalent of knowing about 1 person out of 40 billion people. Over 30% of our world is Christian but there are still whole communities of people who have no idea who Jesus Christ is. Even when the bible is the most read book, there are countless hours of sermons about Christianity, and another over 20% of the world that worship the same god but have a different messiah. So if in a world of 8 billion people where that is the case there are people who don't know about Jesus there are absolutely huge amounts of space where people don't know about the Jedi. Then think if 99% of all Christians suddenly disappeared, the last 1% go into hiding, and most records of them get destroyed or restricted. With how quickly news moves on (especially if soon any news about them would be restricted) and trends change, think just how quickly in 20 years how few people would be thinking about Christianity.

Its one of the few glimpses of awesomeness in an ocean over otherwise bantha puudu. It looks like the Castle Bravo 15 megaton blast except its about 100,000 times more destructive, blasting a hole deep into the planets mantle and just absolute unimaginable upheaval from the shattering of a continent. Just imagine if they had bothered to use the Expanded Universe to make things right we could have seen something like the Sun Crusher obliterating an entire solar system, or the prototype skeleton of the Death Star being swallowed by the Maw Cluster around Kessel after having destroyed its moon, or something like a Super Star Destroyer lifting off from being buried on the surface of Coruscant, for ***** sake the entirely of the comic book series about the cloned Emperors attempted return to power and the World Devastators wreaking havoc damn it all DISNEY SUCKS!!!!!!

Even without palpatines meddling naboo was in huge dept towards the federation and was late on paying interest. The goal of the invasion was to secure the plasma mines under theed palace, which were built by the federation. If we are going to be really technical here then the federation had every legal right to evict the naboo off of said mines.
