How Parking Brakes Work

Here's how emergency brakes work in your car.
The parking brake is used to prevent the vehicle from rolling down an incline. It removes any load on the parking pawl on automatic transmission cars, and is the only holding device on manual transmission cars.
The principle of operation consists of a cable actuated by a foot or hand lever, that is sent to each rear wheel. The mechanism inside the rear drum will activate, causing the rear shoes to expand outward against the drum. The shoe friction material will contact and hold the drum, preventing wheel rotation.
In this video, the entire parking brake system is removed and dissected to show what each component does and how it works. The vehicle in this video is an Infiniti G35.

Wow! I was curious what the assembly of a parking brake looks like and I was expecting to see something pretty schematic after a search, but this video went above and beyond to show exactly how every piece works. I loved how you kept going deeper and followed each part to the next then even pointed out even the little parts like the limit switch that turns the dashboard parking brake light on. Super easy to follow and informative. Beautiful video, even if the brakes themselves weren't very "beautiful" anymore. Ha ha!

@benr.4238
@benr.4238 3 жыл бұрын
1/2 a block probably not bad at all. Try parking on the steepest hill you can find and see if you get any slippage. If not just have a mechanic check it out next time you get the regular brakes serviced. If it slips then you may want to take her in sooner rather than later.

Can you clarify where the return tension is generated to retract the shoes back to the "brake off" position? When I release the pedal it does not seem to release the brakes and I have replaced the drum hardware and shoes.
@elebeu
@elebeu 9 ай бұрын
You need to determine if hydraulic pressure is keeping the brake shoes applied or some mechanical issue. I would start by loosening the brake line at the wheel cylinder, this will release any hydraulic pressure that might be trapped in the brake line and holding the brakes on. If loosening the brake line does not release the brakes, then it Is time to look for some mechanical problem like rust or roughness on the backing plate where the brake shoes slide. You stated that you already installed new springs, be sure they are installed in the correct positions.

My car just has a tab on the rear calipers to accept the parking brake cable which seems like a way simpler setup than having a separate drum brake inside the rotor. Is there any advantage to the drum style though?
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 4 жыл бұрын
They both get the job done. On newer cars I'm seeing the caliper mounted design more which is simplier. However I don't like that you need that special tool to reset the caliper when you change pads.

Mine's been sticking and when it releases it does so with a loud thump from below. Now, that I've seen this I'm wondering if it might not be one (or more) of those 6 points of contact not being well lubricated. My mechanic just told me to let the transmission hold the car, but I've seen how small that piece of metal is that does that.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's kinda overlooked now a days. Most fuel rails have a pressure sensor that you'll read through OBD. Similarly the EVAP service port exists but it's rarely used
