You didn't mention it, but a big difference between living in a major city in Canada for example, a city of about the same area and population as that of Davao, is the LACK of STRESS in the Philippines. To anyone thinking about retiring in the Philippines. Do your homework, plan ahead and don't rush. Example: About 13 years ago, my asawa (wife) of 20 years and I bought a condo in Davao. It became our home away from home, our holiday home. I am already retired and my wife is about to fully retire in a couple of months. The condo is literally paid off. The condo in Davao will be our home and Canada will be our holiday destination. We will be living rent free and our only expenses will the routine things such as utilities, condo fees, food etc. aka NO STRESS. Converting our pensions to pesos, by Philippine standards, we would be considered millionaires. Back home in Canada, we are just struggling middle class. So, like I said above, DO your homework, PLAN ahead and DON'T rush.

I actually learned to enjoy wait times. They say that boredom is healthy. It gives an opportunity to our mind to wonder, to process our experience, to think about how our day, week, month is going, to mull things over. I found myself “gorging” on information to escape boredom: podcasts, audiobooks, music… but as with food, gorging without stopping to digest is unhealthy…

I thought I had patience when I lived in the States, but I've learned to up my game here. How people drive here would end in gun fire back home. As you stated, prices here can be cheaper, you have to learn how and where to shop. Restaurants can be pricey especially in the more western style places. Overall I can't imagine a life back in the States these days. I'm more comfortable here than I could have imagined a year ago. Great people in a great country.

You're right about the driving. I got my PI license and a motorcycle, I'm learning to drive like the locals. I keep thinking how much road rage I would encounter in the US for doing what the locals do here. Other than friends and family, I don't miss the US at all.

My favorite part was hearing how the Filipino people also have problems but they go beyond that to get to know you and be friendly...that's a real life changer...maybe you could do a video just on that one topic...maybe iit's what people in the west want.....a sense of community....and connection with our fellow man😊

Patience calms you down. Even as you wait in line, you learn to look around you and even try to get into a conversation with the next one or behind you. You get to learn the true meaning of sensibility and sensitivity unlike Karens and Kens!! Whatever it is, you're on track.. enjoying life, the world and be grateful for being blest, feeling blest and giving blessings to others in your little humble way. You value your smile when others smile at you... spontaneously and genuinely! God bless us all anywhere, everywhere, anytime, everytime.. 👌😀🙏

“Kuripot” (“miser” in English) is pronounced “koo-ree-poT”, like the same way an American might pronounce “COOTIES”…”kooree-“ then “pot” like in British English. Haha! I had a good giggle hearing you pronounce it like “CURRY POT”. 😂 Now, I’m hungry. In all seriousness, I’m happy seeing more foreigners vlog about how much positivity the Philippines has contributed to their lives. Growing up here, no matter which part of the country, from the get-go, a lot of Pinoys have it rough (no just economically, internally/social status/familial/religious culture, etc.) That’s why most of us are resilient, no matter what part of the world we end up in - a vast majority truly believe everywhere else is better than here. It may sound negative to say, but we as a people are used to being treated like crap (this stems from hundreds if years of colonization from Spain, Japan, U.S., etc.) that we work our damn hardest when we’re abroad. On the positive flipside, the many cultures that have arrived at our shores make us more TOLERANT, understanding, open-minded to other people’s cultures. Just don’t do bad stuff, be an equally respectful human being and 99% of Filipinos will give you the best care, love, friendship, respect, and all that. We’re all quite chummy here. (The 1% being the crappy people you see everywhere in the world that try to take advantage of other people, but those you just look out for.)

What I gather from watching videos about Philippines is that compared to Thailand only advantage is the use of English, easier to deal with visas and immigration and receiving overseas pension, other than that Thailand seems much better option overall.

Hi Dr Laway, Great vlog as usual. I have been coming to the Philippines off and on for the past seven or so years since meeting my girlfriend Cora. We live in a small house in Nueva Ecija, Luzon. People ask me what do i like about the Philippines? I always say 1 Cost of living, 2 The weather, 3 The girls are all so pretty. But also, as you say, the people are so friendly, unlike racist UK where i am sorry to say is my home country, there is no racism here in Philippines. Of course that may be influenced by money. Im getting on a bit now, 75 YO, so just want to enjoy a few years here. As i say to my family in the UK, its cheaper to die here than in the UK. Regards, Steve😢

I always noticed the high prices in the USA, that is why I moved to Arkansas. I have been back in the Philippines for only 5 days and what surprises me is that while they have had inflation, it is no where close to the inflation in the USA, which is way higher than the official US rate. The South has been devastated by drug addiction, it all changed when the big pharma started to get everyone hooked on pain killers. I can handle the lines in the Philippines, what stresses me is the incompetence of getting your food order wrong, or a group of waiters/waitress all busy chatting together or looking at their phones versus doing their jobs. Which kind of reminds me working for the state government low paying jobs, people just pretended to work to get a paycheck, putting in as little effort as possible.

How true, how true! Between culture shock and the gigantic rise of prices in the U.S. I will never live there again much less visit. The people here are fantastic and as you say easy to meet. I only have two issues, the first is product availability. I live in the province on Leyte. I see that many of the products I need or want can be found on other islands but not here. My second issue is with the lack of traffic law enforcement. What is the point of traffic laws but not enforcing them? As I said, other than these two issues I am very happy and content here.

Thank You! I was Raised between Montreal and Miami.. Lived in small villages to big cities.... SE Asia is so much similar to a small village, everyone knows everyone so the rule is DON'T Do BAD THINGS!!! I lived between Thailand (Other countries also) and North America.... Only White Guy in the Village, I was given a chance to contribute to the community and accepted for my worth, not money! I learned Thai as much as I could,... Still Klingon to me but I can get around without a Thai native speaker. Outside Bangkok, the Thais are the BEST, it gave me HOPE of Mankind. I look forward to being in the Philipines in the near future. Khab Khun Krup, VtK

@@DrLawaytravels I live in Cavite, but I spent a month in Davao while my wife worked there. It's even cheaper there vs Cavite. We went all over Mindanao, it's nice. I left Texas in Sept '22 while the inflation was in full stride. I first stayed in a campground and then rented a room in a friend's house.. it was a great year I spent there, but I was glad to get back to the PI after 3.5 years of being gone. I'm just about to pick up my 1 year probationary 13A marriage visa and I have a PI car/motorcycle license now, so its definitely becoming my home..

Are there any videos or thoughts on your overall favorite place so far? I've been to all of them but the Philippines, I get a lot of mixed thoughts on there from people. Some say dangerous, bad food, expensive compared to Thailand/Vietnam, getting around is hard etc. Others say it's pretty good, but only island hopping for the beauty. However, Davao is how I found your vids, I have an interest in longer term there or somewhere. Thanks man, great videos, cool you're a lawyer too.

Visiting different places, especially islands csn be tough since Ph is a developing country and there are no underground tunnels that will take u to islands. But if you're staying in 1 place and may travel once in a while, overall, it's good since Flips are generally friendly and helpful. If you wanna still live like in the west, BGC might be good for you. If you're tired of city life, then of course, outside Metro Manila. Don't go here in March to September..it can be hot. Best time to go is Dec to Feb

The report on superstitions help to clear up something I thought be very strange that when the rain came the people here seem to scatter like flies like the rain would cause them to melt or something. KZfaq I have found not to be totally accurate when it comes to places to go and to visit and probably because it is mostly designed for the vacationers or tourists(MARKETING TACTICS) because you can go places even resorts that cost less and get the same thing. Whenever possible I will follow the same paths where the people know me and I know them and I don't shop at the mom pop shops is what I call them the family owned stores unless i know them because immediately knowing I am a foreigner they will always try to charge me double or lot more than they would a local person if the item has no price on it. Thanks for the information keep it coming

I think the view is a little pollyannish. People are treated with respect based on class and their perception of you (again, according to class). I see as many rush people in supermarkets here as in the US. I'm also located in Davao (from the US), I don't know what supermarket you are referencing but the prices are fairly comparable. The sizes are smaller here so apple to apple comparison is comparable (from apples to yogurt).

I live at one of the best country camping resort and year round trailer parks of its type in Canada where people here interact like in the Philippines, all friendly. Having separated from my Philipina wife, my fault for not doing my share of cleaning, I now am in the business of saving the lives of one Philippino family who inherited bad heart DNA. in this case it's not fraud so don't warn me.
