Pilots and Flight Attendants / Cabin Crew can have a lot of fun together or they can annoy each other. I teamed up with flight attendant Stella from Fly With Stella to find out how pilots annoy flight attendants and cabin crew.

My favorite: Pilot makes a 5 minute announcement in their native language (say Dutch/German/French) and then a 15-second English translation.

@Paul Smith I sometimes find it goes the other way too. I'll be watching a foreign movie with subtitles and the actor will say something really quick, and you get 3-4 lines of text flashing through the subtitles that you have less than a second to digest. Especially annoying if you're in a cinema, when you can't pause and rewind, and that quick bit of dialogue is a major plot point.

So if you're a pilot walking to the back of the aircraft and all the passengers are staring at you; would it be out of line to say to them: "there's a higher chance of survival at the back of the aircraft" You know; just for fun?

I’m a retired 727 pilot. One morning I had a flight to Las Vegas. On the flight was a new hire flight attendant in training. We were on short final and the lead asked the trainee if she emptied the coffee pot to which she said she forgot. Just then tower issued a go around because of traffic still on the runway. The trainee thought we went around because she didn’t empty the coffee pot and was afraid she would get in trouble!

yes, this is a natural continuous engagement, it might be a annoying to some because they are relaxed and know nothing bad will happen but with people flying for their first time or fly once every 2 to 5 years they know little of how safe planes and flight crews are so they overthink things "did he finish? did his radio cut out and I could not listen to something in between?" when the pilot does the little "huu" in a relaxed way it relaxes the anxious people, make them realize flight crew do that every day as a routine and they are still there, they are pros on their dailies, nothing is going to happen... at least that's my personal opinion when I study other people's expressions during flight because reasons :3

It is actually something all humans do in their speech. If they are talking and hit a spot where they have to "think" about their next words....they will fill the gap with "something" rather than let that gap be silent.... filling it with ummmmm or uhhhh or anything that is not a "word" that will not leave that awkward silence.... It's just psychology.... and I'm not sure about the WHY behind it.... but I know it is like "instinct" that we do it...

"Why the 'uh'?" Because you're holding your speaking turn. In conversation this is a signal to other people that you are not finished, and this carries over for your PAs. Stella and other flight attendants don't do it doing their presentations because half of their job *is* presentation, so they have a better intuitive grasp of "This is not a conversation, I don't have to hold space."
@esm1817
@esm1817 Жыл бұрын
Besides, your flight attendants can be seen so the passengers are aware that they are still presenting from the visual elements of what they're doing. Uh... is a way of stalling through distractions. Since pilots are looking at a lot of information and distilling it down amidst a lot of distractions, it's like a placeholder in the conversation while they regain what they're trying to say. As well as, yeah, sort of holding the place in the conversation.

My grandson is a huge plane fan and he tells the flight attendant about how excited he is and they usually bring the pilot back to talk to him. His grandfather is a pilot and an airplane builder, so he knows a lot about planes. He’s been flying since he was 18 months. He asked his first airline pilot asked if there was anything the pilot shouldn’t do, my grandson said no loop de loops and the pilot very solemnly agreed to not do any looped loops

100% I look at them as _actual_ celebrities. Their training, the responsibility they take so we can get to grandmas for Thanksgiving, the big brain on all of the crew? I think it's fantastic and while I'm a 48yo woman, when a flight attendant speaks to me in a way that seems "special" out like they're somehow taking a moment to make _me_ feel seen, (though their job is to make everyone feel that way), or when I get to see the pilot as I'm getting off the plane? I feel kinda like a 16yo girl just taken with everything. It's awesome! It's dreamy! And why not it feels good to have fun and feel young 💯✨

@Benni B Not so much, as one can have a buffer on the mic, it sends a very slight delay, but guarantees all of it is sent. But yeah, while making the announcements pilot is 1) listening to ATC, 2) listening to and paying attention to what the other pilot is doing, 3) reading information off the sheets of things like weather conditions and such. It is a lot of information they are dealing with, they do an excellent job even with the "uuuuuhhhhhh" bits to manage all that at once.

As someone who has suffered from ulcerative colitis for over a decade, let me tell you, being judged for needing a bathroom at an inconvenient time is a real fear. Many of us suffer from social anxiety because of it and avoid confined places like airplanes like the plague. You can be in a room full of bathrooms all day long and it won't make a difference to anyone with IBD because it's a one-minute-to-the-next kind of disease. So be kind! We don't mean to try your patience, and no one is more inconvenienced than we are ❤

Was on a flight once where the pilot explained a bit about the plane, the noises it makes and things people will likely hear and see (such as the flaps moving out) and about how they nagivate and stuff like that. I used to be a radio dispatcher, and I have a guess at the reason for the "uhhhh". When you're talking on the radio, dead air is going to be immediately swooped in on by everyone else who is waiting for a break to get in. So you develop the habit of audibly filling pauses, and when you're on the PA, it probably feels just like being on the radio.
@amicaaranearum
@amicaaranearum 3 жыл бұрын
It's also natural in conversations for the same reason. The filler noises say, "I'm not done talking yet. Please do not interrupt." It's easy to understand how conversational habits can slip into radio or PA communications.

My Dad was one of the story-telling pilots who loved giving PAs. Of course, through the bulk of his career there wasn't as many entertainment and distraction options for the passengers, so sight-seeing announcements were more welcome (though not when people were trying to sleep). I was flying along stand-by on one of his flights once, flying over some western states. He came on to talk about the terrain below and the Oregon Trail. He pointed out to passengers where they could still see some of the wagon ruts on the ground. He also pointed out those circles on the ground below, and told the passengers that those were where the settlers would circle their wagons. Half of the passengers laughed, knowing an irrigated field when they saw one. The rest of the passengers BELIEVED HIM.

Don't mean to be disrespectful Stella but I have to disagree with a few of your "annoyances". You stated that you don't like pilot announcements and pointing out interesting features along the route. Well what may be boring to you is very interesting to some of us. Myself I like them.I love flying and my nose is usually pressed against the window looking. You want us to enjoy the flight, well they contribute to that. You also stated you just want us to go to sleep and be quiet. That just sounds like laziness. I have felt MANY times by FAs that the passengers are just an "annoyance" they'd rather not be bothered with. While true you're primary function and role is safety a little less "attitude" would be nice. While I have experienced a GREAT many friendly, helpful FAs there are also many surly ones. btw my sister is a former FA and her husband a Captain for a major so I do know a little bit about the biz. Just my two cents anyway.

Back when I flew all over for work, I loved it when the pilot would explain what we were passing and what we could see -- various landmarks etc etc. One airline I flew on had a monitor in front of every seat and there was a channel we could tune to that gave us all the flight information we'd want including airspeed, altitude, cabin pressure, inside and outside temperature, where we were, what our estimated arrival time was, how long we'd been in the air, and a lot of other useful information. I loved that stuff.

The "uuuuuuhhhhhh" is an indication that the pilot really wants to be an ASTRONAUT! When many of us were growing up, we considered the astronauts the coolest people on and off the planet. When we watched the broadcasts from space, the astronauts all said "uuuuuuhhhhhh" every time they started talking or when they paused. They did this because their microphones weren't triggered on until they'd start speaking. But if they just started talking, the first syllable would get cut off. So they would start with "uuuuuuhhhhhh" to turn the microphone on and "uuuuuuhhhhhh" during pauses to keep the microphone on.

Pilots were saying”just let us fly to RDU” Atc be like “you have to come back to the gate by the rules” ITS FREAKING GLASS COVERING A LIGHT!!!!! then the pilot just said. From Australia, 12 months ago I boarded a 3 hour internal flight, Approx 10 minutes after take off the Pilot, not the First Officer came on the PA. He proceeded to speak for at least 6 minutes, interspersing the flight details with many tried and true jokes he just made every passenger feel as if he was talking to THEM individually. At the end of his announcements, the whole of the cabin burst into spontaneous applause. When we deplaned he was standing at the front exit which took us three times as long as every second passenger (including myself) stopped and wanted to shake his hand. Best flight ever! I remember that too, I visited the cockpit twice as a child. One of the times I was the only kid, who wanted to see the cockpit (or maybe others weren't allowed by their parents, because why would you ever not want to visit the cockpit?) and one of the pilots actually explained a lot of the instruments to me and showed me where exactly we would fly. He even explained a bit of physics to me, because, as he didn't know me, he thought it was safe to ask if I had any more questions. Little did he know I would go right for "How does a plane stay in the air, eventhought it's so heavy?". Super nice guy, will never forget it.

Now, since about 10 years, I think I found a balance of being friendly, productive, being good friends, but stepping in when something goes wrong. 9/10 I will take full responsibility for everything, even if my staff messed up, bc I realize that it's many times about misunderstandings, communication and working to prevent stuff of happening again (in contrast to a blame game; the 1/10 is when I realize something went wrong bc of bad faith).

The reason for the "aaahhhhh" or "Uuuhhhhh" is subconscious. When you know others are listening to you talk, we feel a sence of obligation and tend to fill those voids with what are referred to as "crutch" words or phrases. Other ones are "as you know", "annnnnnnd", "You know what i'm saying", and "soooooo". It is a way for our brains to compensate because the brain thinks that silence is not a good thing when others are listening. You feel the need to say "something". For reference, I am a flight instructor and teach others to be instructors. Love your channel and keep up the great work.

I've never been a pilot, but I've been a Vehicle Commander in the Army. We wore helmets with built-in microphones and headphones. The mics were voice-activated. The mic could sometimes take a fraction of a second to turn on, especially if there was a lot of background noise. And there is often a lot of background noise in an MRAP or a Stryker or an aircraft. So, if we want to say, "Contact. Three o'clock. Range, 400 meters." It may come out as, "...tact.... o'clock..... eters." So, we'll say, "Uhhhh... contact. Uhhhhhhh, three o'clock. Uhhhh.... range 400 meters." The "uhhhh" gives the mic a chance to activate.

On one of my only flights, going from Copenhagen to Lisbon, right as we were about to go, the pilot made the usual announcement, hoping we would enjoy the flight to DELHI! And for some reason, they never corrected themselves in the announcement! The flight attendants had to announce that we didn't have to worry, and the flight was indeed going to Portugal, not India... Only like half an hour into the flight, the pilot came back on, ensuring us that it was a slip of the tongue, and then added the following announcement just to cheer us up even more: If we actually tried to go to India with the amount of fuel we had, we likely wouldn't have made the trip there anyway...

Generally, the reason I see pilots do the "uhhhhh"s is due to the microphone and how sensitive it is. In particular, I mean how it can be a habit we pick up from privat pilot training since the small single engine Pipers or Cessnas we fly are so loud. Sometimes (often) the mic will cut out the first part of what you say (just a split second, but still something), so you want to say something to have the mic catch your voice before you start speaking about the critical information. Similarly, that is why we don't go quite in the middle of speaking if we need time to think, since that will cut off the mic again and we still need to effectively say "uh." The alternative I found is people who just stretch the word out in order to not allow a pause for the mic to cut out. For example: "[Airport identifier] ground, this iiiiiis 123AB, on theeeeeeee West raaamp, ready to taxiiii with informatiooooon Viktor."

@@ROTAXD No, but all the other people on the channel are waiting for the sound to stop from whoever is currently transmitting so that they can begin their own transmissions filled with um's, and uh's and vocal fry. Actually, I don't think it's a radio thing. That's just how people talk. It may be because a silence like that in a conversation is an invitation for someone else to say something, so people learn to fill the silences so they won't get interrupted when they know they have more to say.

I “uhhh” when ATC gives me a paragraph of information all at once and at the speed of light. “Clear taxi via uhhhh Delta, Charlie, cleared taxi uhhh runway 8 at uhhh Charlie, then continue taxi via Echo, hold short runway 17 at uhhhh echo”.

I'm not a pilot myself but i've seen quite some videos about ATC communication or aviation in general. And i coulnd't agree more. Even moreso taking in account that not everybody speaks english fluently / is a native english speaker. I totally understand that while working at ATC time (management) is paramount. But those infos are coming in really fast.

I have to say, that in almost fifty years of flying all over the world I have never once been annoyed by that uuuhhhh that pilots do during PAs. I always assumed that they were checking the information as they were delivering it... It is an eye opener to find that it annoys anyone....

I might be the odd one out, but I actually like it when the pilot makes longer PA’s! I find it interesting hearing about where we are flying over, the weather etc. I think it shows that the pilots love the fact that we will be flying over the Mississippi, or being able to look out and be able to recognize what city is in the far distance!

I would agree it's not a good idea during the early or very late flight but otherwise? Yes, please :) Still that's as a passenger, who doesn't fly often. I can understand how it can annoy flight attendants who heard it million times already. Still she said the love their passenger so suffer for our enjoyment :-D

I don't. If it were up to me, they wouldnt do any PAs just to tell me about the weather at the destination. I looked that one up myself to dress and pack accordingly. And when I hear they do this while they have to do other stuff, I am even more inclined to say "just focus on your job, and that's certainly not reporting the weather".

Funnies thing I ever saw while commercially flying...pilot (A320) decides (I guess it was his kick) to 'meet-and-greet' at the end of the flight, right outside the cockpit door. He clearly forgot about that 'bump-and-drag' event at takeoff, or that turbulent air midway (that had people bouncing around like a kid's ball-house while up and moving about...for a good 2-minutes). At landing and deboarding, I'm 30-people back, watching every mother, grandmother, grandpa and busy-body CHEW ON HIM as they went out the door...I've got my briefcase, and as I walk past him, I just say 'can't win 'em all'...the groan he gave was classic! (broke him from 'meet-and-greet', guaranteed!)

One of my favorite memories is when I was flying unaccompanied minor and the Southwest pilot let me into the cockpit and I "fired the guns". I'm sure it was some air release but it's a powerful fun memory.
