In Pixar’s “Onward,” two elf brothers turn their late father into a pair of pants. Their dad had the most technically complex costume Pixar’s ever done (per their production notes). The challenge for the costume animation team was to make something that was appealing, funny, physically plausible, & look like a person at first glance - but ultimately behave like an actual lump of cloth. We focus on Dad’s costume, since he’s at the center of the story & his clothing posed a particular challenge to Pixar’s character tailoring artists. It will be interesting to show how much animation/simulation work & creativity goes into a single outfit for a Pixar character.

The issue is with real-time rendering. Real-time rendering just isn't good enough and the average person who plays games, ie the people who buy games, can't afford to buy a computer to handle high-quality real-time rendering. However, that doesn't make their artists any less talented. I mean have you seen the Overwatch animated shorts? That's the kind of talent these people have. It's just a matter of the average joe not having a good enough computer. Give in 10-20 years and they (hopefully me by then) will probably get there.

It's quite common for filmmakers to talk to actual artisans about how their craft works. People who code up these programs obviously have no idea about how clothes move. There are an incredible amount of details in every aspect of physical world. So they take suggestions from people who have more experience and knowledge. I'm guessing that's what Steve was suggesting. Even if they didn't take Armani's help, I'm sure Pixar had some other real cloth expert helping them.

@@swapnilrastogi217 Exactly, Jobs was known for his ambitious ideas that would get his team thinking creatively, even if that exact idea wasn't used. Pixar would continue to think like this, from studying ostriches to animate Kevin in _Up,_ to having their team take archery lessons to prepare for _Brave._ That attention to detail and welcoming outside expertise sets them apart. _Brave_ is one of the few movies (animated or not) that gets the bio-mechanics of archery correct. If anybody is interested in the company itself, their President (Ed Catmull), wrote a book on their ethos called _Creativity, Inc._ - a great read.

I always thought it would be cool if Pixar re-rendered the first Toy Story, using the original motion and everything of the original, but with the shading and rendering technology that has been gained since then. It would be like seeing a whole new movie, but without actually changing anything fundamental to the story that made it great.

Pixar doesn't make the processors, but they do have an in-house software called Presto/Marionette which they use to make all of their movies. They are constantly updating it so that it renders faster. For Example, In Monster's Inc., they added the fur particle system especially for Sulley and other furry monsters. Before, animating fur was a nightmare because Sulley has around 2 million hairs on his model. Imagine if you had to animate each individual hair! The actual render farm at Pixar consists of thousands of GPUs constantly running. They actually have a cute sign at their office that says something like "Render Farm: Open 24/7 for your convenience!"

I kind of feel like Pixar is literally just seeing how far they can go 😂 like tbh their films don’t feel like “just for the money” like it feels genuine. It’s amazing and I’m so inspired by it. And idk if this is an example but with soul they could have made it cost money to watch on Disney plus but they didn’t. It’s interesting. While with Disney’s Mulan they had it cost money To watch. I don’t think that Pixar is doing this for money, or even a lot of popularity. It kinda shows how pure it is

I remember Brad Bird or someone going on about how difficult this was in the Incredibles. Stuff like that and the transforming car you see for 1.5 seconds are pretty demanding levels of detail.

Man. This was some good information. I'm glad they got these sort of insights regarding these movies. Now I can go back and see them to appreciate the work animated films have to go through just to become what they are on screen.

One other thing to note about Onward is that in order to get the dad’s movement right Dan Scanlon actually went in front of a white screen and acted as the model so they could get a feel as to how the dad was going to move and what kind of personality he was going to have. I recommend watching the Onward section of the new show Disney Insider on Disney+ if you wanna here the whole story of how they brought the dad in Onward to life (no pun intended) it really is quite interesting

I think that's complete bullshit. At most they develop in-house renderers and simulators. But the actual server CPUs, no way they actually spend that much money where they just could use a much better solution on the market. I'm pretty sure Dreamworks used AMD CPUs in the 2000s.
