Big fan of your video!!! What is your view on the Portuguese Monarchy? Do you think they fail or made Portugal a prosperous nation? Do you think the President of Portugal could be replaced with a King, kind of like Spain, Belgium, or the United Kingdom? Could you do a video on all the kings? Thanks for your opinion, have a great day!

I am from Oman and I know that Portugal invaded it in around the 16 century, and when Omanis freed the costal cities they started chasing them and kicked them from India and east Africa, and that is how Oman was able to control east africa(mainly zanzibar), so when you think about it, Portugal played a big role in the Omani history

Fernando Pessoa already knew that Portugal prefers the sea: The Two Castles Europe lies, reclining upon her elbows: From East to West she stretches, staring, And romantic tresses fall over Greek eyes, reminding. The left elbow is stepped back; The other laid out at an angle. The first says Italy where it leans; This one England where, set afar, The hand holds the resting face. Enigmatic and fateful she stares Out West, to the future of the past. *The staring face is Portugal.*

A few mistakes: The Castilian Succession war was: Joanna la Beltraneja against Isabella of Castile and Leon, not of Aragon, that was Ferdinand, her husband (they were queen and king of different kingdoms). So If Joanna had won that war Castile et Leon would have been unified, but not Aragon. And the "spanish" or "the spanish kingdoms" doesn't exist until the 16c, before that they were Castile and Leon, Aragon and Navarre (as independent as Portugal until the marriage of Isabella and Ferdinand)

How Portugal Has The Same Border Since 1297 if you ignore Olivença, Couto Misto, Azores and Madeira, Napoleonic wars (they did de facto conquer some territory for a bit) and united kingdom with Brazil.
@diogorodrigues747
@diogorodrigues747 2 жыл бұрын
Couto Misto was technically a part of both kingdoms (Castille/Spain and Portugal). When the country was absorved, the inside borders stayed intact, so borders actually didn't change. In the islands, borders also didn't change because... well, they are islands! Brazil was outside of Europe, and he is only comparing with the rest of Europe, ignoring territories outside of Europe.

In 1801 Portugal lost the city of Olivença to Spain after the war of Orange against Spanish backed by Napoleon. In 1809 French were defeated by Wellington at Porto and retreated to Spain. The specificity of the Portuguese society was the large number of villages and lower nobles independent from the grandees. So most of the time the Grandees were not powerful enough to plot against the state, and foreign invasions were countered by the mobilization of a very large part of the population, concerned with their freedom ("ordenança" during 18th-19th century)..

Hi. Good video. Only one comment : Isabel became Queen of Castile, not Aragon. Her husband, Ferdinand, was the King the Aragon. For long time the Kings of Castille and Aragon dreamt abut creating a unified Iberian Kingdom. Maybe that also explains why Spain most of the time tried to keep peace with its Portuguese neighbor. Additionally, the Spanish and Portuguese royal families were connected by blood links in an attempt to keep peace.

Besides Olivença - which is a considerable change, regardless of Portugal recognizing it or not - there were other changes in the border between Portugal and Spain since 1297. Between 1580 and 1640 there was the Iberian Union, but that didn’t mean any border change, because (at least de jure) it was just a personal union: Portugal remained its own country, with its own territory, laws, government, army, etc. (The way Canada and the UK have the same queen but are independent countries.) However, when Portugal considered its sovereignty was being infringed (Madrid was trying to centralise all power), there was the “Restoration” of 1640, which started over 27 years of war (until early 1668). During that war, Portugal lost some small border lands: Ermesende (Hermisende), Salvaterra do Minho (Salvaterra de Miño), and São Félix dos Galegos (San Felices de los Gallegos). Those losses were not recognised by Portugal until much later. In 1801, in the course of a war between Portugal and Spain, as mentioned before, Portugal lost Olivença (Olivenza) and neighbouring territory on the left bank of River Guadiana. In 1815, by the Treaty of Vienna, Spain accepted to give Olivença back to Portugal, but then failed to keep its word… In 1864 (Treaty of Lisbon) the border between the two countries was rectified, resulting in small changes: Spain acquired most of the old “Couto Misto”, a condominium of sorts, including all its villages (Portugal kept a small strip of uninhabited land), while the so called “Povos Promíscuos” went to Portugal. Also by this treaty, Portugal explicitly or implicitly recognised Spanish sovereignty over Hermisende, Salvaterra de Miño, and San Felices de los Gallegos - but NOT over Olivença and neighbouring territory (and it still doesn’t). The treaty of 1864 took full effect in 1868, so it is more accurate to say Portugal has the same (European) borders since 1868… Were these some great territorial changes? No. But they *were* changes, so the premise of the video is flawed.
