Wrong. They're already well ahead of SpaceX in cost & cost savings, they're already backlogged 2 years with business and when they build Neutron there's only a few case scenarios Musk's giant Mr. Miyagi rocket system has in valid customer use. Oh and we didn't need to give Peter Beck $5 billion in our tax money only to have him build giant towers without FAA approval. Peter Beck also doesn't pay racist Canadian truckers to interrupt our economy with bitcoin either. Just wake up from your cult is the short answer

The catching process is an excellent idea. In order to improve it, I recommend to install cameras on the hook and under the helicopter. The display of both cameras in front of the pilot will make the operation more precise and easier. For the pilot to look outside the window seems rather awkward. Just a suggestion. Godspeed RocketLab, you're doing an excellent job.

I think the problem the helicopter had catching the booster was weight. If one takes into account that the chute can/may still catch the air, when the copter is flying back to base. The airspeed of the copter and airflow in general could fill the chute, that air pressure would increase the weight/force the helicopter has to carry and move. It's been over 40 years since I last attended school, so I don't remember the math/physics it involves. I believe they will need a way to completely collapse the chute after getting caught by the helicopter, so it can not catch any air.

Space X are in a completely different league entirely. Technology-wise, success rate, investment, contracts & the overall vision is just light years ahead of rocket lab right now & for the foreseeable future. Space X is practically saving NASA right now and reliance on Space X to get anything sent to the ISS, is practically non-negotiable at this point in time. I can't see rocket lab coming anywhere close to what Space X is achieving. Rocket lab will just be about putting small payloads into LEO. Peter Beck, a New Zealand engineer, and founder and CEO/CTO of Rocket Lab, has been sending up 3D Printed Rockets for years, since 2006. Peter Beck launches small satellites at a frequent, reliable and cost-effective means to orbit. In 2021, the New Zealander eat his hat because he said that his rockets are so cheap, there was no need for them to be reusable, and if he ever decided to make them reusable, he'll eat his hat. In 2021, he made a 3D Printed reusable Rocket, so ... eat his hat. His reusable Rockets come down with a parachute with large hooks. Rocket Lab is an incredible company and I wish them nothing but success, can't wait to see neutron and how awesome that's going to be! Just wanted to say tho, the comparison between Falcon 9 landings and Electron landings at the beginning is very apples to oranges, the electron is smaller so it lands in a parachute, the falcon 9 lands propulsively, comparing the two takes away from how complicated a Falcon 9 landing is. This is in no way a criticism of the Electron, it's a fantastic little rocket that's great at its job, but the Falcon 9 is a completely different class of rocket, literally.

He said that his rockets are so cheap, there is no need for them to be re-usable, and that if he ever decided to make them re-usable, then he'll eat his hat. In 2021 (15 years later) he decided that he will make re-usable rockets using mid-air captures with a Helicopter. So ... he made a video of himself eating his shredded and blended hat. @benparnell332
@benparnell332 2 жыл бұрын
Rightly or wrongly the design decisions that Rocketlab has made for Neutron is to make the engines as simple as possible and focus the complexity elsewhere. Electric pumps make the engine design more complex and hence have been omitted. There are several reasons RL has chosen to do this: 1) they have more expertise in other areas such as composites, 2) Development timeline - it takes a long time to develop a rocket engine from scratch so simplicity helps them get Neutron to the market sooner. 3) Reusability - the simpler the engine the fewer things that can go wrong so the more reliable it will be for long term reuse and probably easier maintenance too

catching a booster is never gonna be as reliable as propulsive landing.. a pilot can get distracted... the helicopter can catch a gust of wind etc. Falcon 9 has to date 125 consecutive landings on multiple boosters... sooner or later Rocket lab will have to invest in propulsive landing...
@benparnell332
@benparnell332 2 жыл бұрын
You are probably right but propulsive landing simply isn't an option for the electron. Because the rocket is so small the extra avionics and fuel required to make electron land propulsively would decrease the payload capacity so much that it wouldn't be worthwhile. This is why Peter Beck and Rocketlab didn't pursue reusability earlier. To quote Peter "to make electron reusable(by propulsion) we would have to make it far larger to the point where it is a medium lift vehicle and that is not our target market". They are now developing the Neutron medium-lift launch vehicle which is designed with reusability at its core and the first stage of the neutron will land propulsively in the same way as the falcon 9.
