I love this!! Reminder that the word natural is a pretty useless word to use in any way in this context. Toxic things can still be natural bc what’s natural isn’t automatically a good thing. There’s a clash in the use of this word when when any product reaches consumers, it’s a heavily discussed subject in the skincare community for example. Natural is not a regulated word so the meaning is created socially and unfortunately this means people take advantage of it to pander to consumers who want things that aren’t bad for humans or the earth.

Except that for this particular substance they labeled it non toxic. That should be illegal.

I took an oil painting class and they had us wash the brushes with bar soap and water. (I used Ivory because that's what I use for my watercolor brushes when they need cleaning.) It worked well. Of course doing that method results in whatever oil paint was on your brush going down the drain which may not be any better than using the smelly stuff. These were not water mixable oil paints so I don't know why it worked, but it did. Granted these were small brushes because we weren't working on anything larger than 9x12.

Yikes! I had my university students use bar soap as well, BUT they didn’t use solvents and we had a special , self-contained brush washing station with recycled water that was serviced every few weeks. Washing brush water down the drain if you use solvents or paint with toxic properties (like cadmiums, cobalts, manganese, etc) is best kept away from the water supply.

Soap is an emulsion that can grab onto both water and oil. You sort of made temporary water-mixable oil paint.

@@LeslieStroz when I used to do oil I used eco house citrus brush cleaner or dish detergent or both. I was reading also that eco house citrus cleaner also has some safety data to it. I am looking to start using some oils again to enhance parts of my acrylic paintings so I got linseed soap to try instead. I stayed away from cadmium colours. not sure if I used cobalts or not.

I agree! No matter how safe the manufacturer makes it sound on their packaging. We have to READ THE LABEL. I think the turps makers may be feeling the pinch from artists turning to safer alternatives. Thanks!

Where do you get your water mixable oil paints?
@felinefurkin42756 ай бұрын
Damn. I’ve read some safety sheets and understand some of it, enough to realise we’re using stuff and should be more aware and cautious. I like oil paint but even the watermixables, and acrylic, and spirits odourless or not bother my head, throat and chest. Pastels are annoying to use but also become such fine dust, you can’t see it, but then I feel it in my chest too. You can use a mask and air purifier, perhaps better ones than we realise cos oil particles are so tiny, I’ve found industrial safety info and equipment online cos there’s very little info for artists beyond the safety sheets. I use watercolour mostly and use cobalt cos I love the colours, though I avoid others.

How do they get away with calling it non toxic?

Well that seems nontoxic to me. 🤣 Joking of course. How are they getting away with a label like that??
@jd016652 ай бұрын
Doesn't natural turpentine have the same warnings? Even if it's distilled with water, what are the warnings on it? It's made from sap of pine trees. So what do you consider "natural"? Just about everything made from plants is toxic. So, what solvent should be used? One video (O1Jnwn46CLw) suggests Gamsol by Gamblin or to use something called a solvent-free, which allows him to not clean the brushes by leaving them in an oil that keeps them from drying out. That's probably the best option because it will prevent washing stuff into the water supply.
