Thanks to Acronis for sponsoring this video! Head to go.acronis.com/LUKEMIANI and use code LUKEMIANI2023 to get 20% off Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office.
This is a dedicated sponsored video in which we'll examine the history of viruses and malware- from the 1970s and early days of Apple, through the 1980s and the rise of copy protection on floppy disks, the 1990s and the rise of bloatware and mistrust in software companies, to today, when the risk to your data takes a more nuanced perspective.

Coming Thursday I'll have a restoration video on that machine with much more to come! Even if he didn't say it was a commercial in the description, half the video was a very high level look at the early 80's and 90's and how viruses spread. Could he label his video with an ad sponsor watermark? Possibly. But it's not like Luke or any other creator live off adsense alone. If you don't like his content, well don't watch or better yet make better content. The upload button is right there for you to use.

How SAFE is your Mac? Who here was satisfied to learn the answer to this question? Who here thought Macs may have a vulnerability based on the title of this video? I genuinely thought this KZfaqr is doing a great service to our community researching and finding out OR explaining a new vulnerability that Macs are facing that I’m not aware of already. Or at least something new and valuable or a good knowledge to have. Because that’s what the title suggests. I gained nothing except a history lesson. I realized i gained nothing until near the end of the video. I don’t care if it is a sponsored video. I care if its a TV commercial. Because i don’t need what it’s selling. I needed to know “How SAFE is my Mac”. And i didn’t get my answer. I was fooled into watching a TV commercial. A 10 minute long, sneaky TV commercial. @Joel Miller The problem with the original comment is that it implies that SnazzyLabs and Luke Miani are hiding the fact that their videos are a sponsored video. The fact is that in this video, he disclosed it at the very start of the video and as Marc Ilunga mention, in the description. While this was essentially an ad for a service, it was still educational.

I have feedback in 2 points: 1. How is Acorns better than iCloud? You can have 2TB of encrypted storage in iCloud and just have your important data there instead of using another company. 2. Video felt incomplete. I understand it was sponsored and I don't mind that, it still had some good content. However I wish it spoke more about how safe your Mac is as the title implied. As a relatively new MacOS user I was expecting to understand how much safer it is than say Windows(what I am familiar with). The only comparison was an ad from the late 90s? Should I look for an antivirus software for my Mac, etc. I walked away not being able to answer the question from the title of this video.

Sorry Luke but it's not a good video. 1) You didn't answer the main question how safe my Mac is? After the history part you basically just show us an old commercial about the 15.000 viruses and after that it's only ad for your sponsor. How safe is iCloud (with the advanced data protection)? 2) How does Acronis protect my data? Why is it secure and how secure is it compared to iCloud?

Once upon a time I was an enthusiastic Acronis user, back when they made stand alone backup software. I can only remember one time in over 10 years that I ended up with a corrupted backup that failed to restore. Ever since they moved to their new subscription model and bloated the software with stuff I don't want or need I was forced to move on. I sure wish they still made their stand alone backup software. They'd still have me as a customer (as long as I could buy it outright and not have to rent it).

fundamentally I support SIP on macOS. Even though it does annoy me a bit the way I see it is: most people (read: grandparents) do not know and do not care what that is, but it protects the VAST majority of users who don't even need to know what SIP is. At the same time, technically competent people can turn it off ONCE and never have to think about it again. I think the model Apple uses for SIP is actually a pretty nice compromise. It transparently protects most people, disabling it is complicated enough to raise some red flags even among competent people, and it only needs to be disabled once and then it won't bother you any more. It brings me peace of mind recommending macOS over Windows to people I know aren't the most savvy, but also means if I need to I can take control of my Mac. Compare that to the iPhone which locks everyone out all the time. Jailbreaks are really Security exploits and get undone automatically with every dot update of iOS.

Packaged software made sense in the 90s. You couldn't just download anything from the internet. Providing things like Clarisworks, encyclopedias, budgeting software etc was value added to the Mac. You needed to have something to do on your computer. This was especially true for the Performa line as it was directly marketed to home users who may have never owned a computer before and didn't have a software catalog on the shelf. Anyways, the Miani "content" ends around the 7 minute mark guys. The rest is pure ad.

Been enjoying your videos… Few important thing… Game Hackers would easily get around embedded manufacturers trick security codes by simply copying the entire Game Disk as an image elsewhere. To produce a working copy of the Master disk, they would recook the image over to the new floppy. Capturing disk images was later enhanced by a special plug in card to eliminate security signals embedded in code to disrupt copying a new disk. Witnessing this speaks loudly that “code theft knows no bounds”. Because of the intense Hacking over the Internet, Libraries were forced to divide hard drives to include prepared setup for reinstall complete Windows systems. The working partition when User finished would auto be reinstalled with a fresh operating system for the next user. Users time was limited to a few hours to limit how corrupt the Hacking could get. As a Library User after my home System was destroyed, using a Boot Floppy with the Write Security Window engaged, was sufficient with overcoming Hacking. However, instead, Hackers targeting me would destroy the Floppy drive instead. Through intense testing up against high level Hackers, it’s been discovered Apple has purposely built in Backdoor(s) that enable Informed Hackers to enter. Entering enables the Hacker to flip the User Device to a Slave to a Master. This happens in seconds and Setup setting don’t have an effect. Further testing shows this ‘backdoor is in the Bluetooth function. Normal Bluetooth is limited to 30ft, but this modified Bluetooth for Special Hackers is around 100ft. Bluetooth BT design offers a faster method of connecting then WiFi and appears the best choice for high level Hackers. Whether it was purposely designed in for Government/Intelligence Groups, the knowledge was given to a large Criminal.Org. They have been busy stealing from everyone especially from Debit Card Holders. My last Debit Card only lasted just over a week before it had to be blocked. Researching deeper, I’m of the belief that Apple has the backdoor function code buried in the most secure area. Feel it isn’t in the iOS as updates haven’t helped. Where facial/biometric Security function code resides may where it is. This suggests it’s in the more secure sepOS. It isn’t known if the sepOS is upgradable. The Backdoor design is in Hardware with improved components to handle longer distances past 100ft. This suggests it’s built in to the Antenna Module in iPhones and iPads. Feel it exists with all Apple products. Realize this backdoor was proven to exist in Cricket. It’s expected to exist in the other manufacturers systems also. Marty Didier

I started working in IT in the mid-1980s. The very first virus/malware I ever saw was more fun than malicious. It would be a small program inserted into startup.bat on MSDOS machines. Upon boot, there would be a strange sound and then the system would display "ATTENTION - WATER DETECTED IN DISK DRIVE". It would then say "STARTING SPIN CYCLE" and the sound system would play a weird sound using what sounded like a spin cycle on a washing machine. After a count down of about 30 secs, it would then say "WATER REMOVED, SYSTEM READY FOR USE" and then startup.bat updated to remove the program. It was actually pretty funny (for about the first 10 times LOL).

You’re really overstating the prevalence of viruses and malware in the ‘80s. I very rarely encountered a virus while working at Kinko’s in college, and we scanned every customer disk we inserted into our Macs. We scanned scores of disks each week, and rarely did we find anything. Viruses and malware didn’t really take off until the popularization of the Internet, and then that was more a Windows problem than a Mac problem, just as it is today.

Normally, I really like your videos but the whole premise of the video (at least it seemed to me) is that people dislike big data and that tech companies have very little trust. I don't feel like you addressed this, and moreover, you offer a 'solution' that is just another tech company with cloud hosting.

So, Luke, a related question. Once you’re logged into iCloud on a Mac, everything is open to anyone who can get into the machine: email, Notes, contacts, OneDrive, etc. And computers get stolen all the time. So how secure is my Mac if it’s stolen?

Bro dont.. he’ll start talking about the history of theft and how there always been cops and then end up selling you to Acronis..

@@rezwan8744 Yeah. I remember the good old days when it was a rarity to see any sponsored videos and people like Luke here were just doing them for fun and to make a few bucks from the 1-2 ads that showed before the video. Between the initial ads, the ads every two mins and the 50% of the content that’s devoted to sponsorship, it’s got to the point where I think hard about whether I want to bother even opening the video. Hopefully, though, when we get to the point where comments will be sponsored, you and I will make some money.

I think Macs are the safest out there without having to install anything. That’s the power of Time Machine.

Wait, people don’t trust Microsoft, Google, or Apple to hold their data in the cloud…but they should trust Acronis? Why is that? How is Acronis any better than other online backup solutions?

Excuse my technological illiteracy, but why would it be beneficial to use Acronis instead of a combination of Time Machine on an external drive and iCloud? (legitimate question, not discounting the video sponsor)

I don't know why they never made Hard Disk Floppies, meaning inside was an actual 1 layer dbl sided hard disk that could spin way faster and be read faster. Store more. Etc. I should of been born in 60's I'd be a billionaire.

At 9:36 he says, "5TB of cloud backup is included", this is FALSE. If you upgrade to a PREMIUM subscription, you get 1TB for free, but upgrading to 5TB costs $290/year. Not sure why Luke lied here? Or at the very least, misled the viewers by accident due to ignorance of actual pricing?
