~Disclaimer: My sampling of outside media in this video constitutes as Fair Use under section 107 of the US Copyright Law, for the purpose of criticism and commentary, which thus invalidates my usage as copyright infringement.~
While I don’t view it as “cancel culture”, and while I can acknowledge instances where it can be a valid observation to point out, I explain in this video how the argument that a piece of work “hasn’t aged well” or “doesn’t hold up” can be contradictory to why it exists, since the primary purpose of music, film, TV shows, etc. is entertainment. Along with discussing the purpose of art and why we enjoy it, we also talk about storytelling, how comedy works, seeing value in a work that contrasts what the artist thinks about it, and what propaganda is.

You know what I find ironic: those who hate nostalgia, say it doesn't age well, it doesn't hold up, it's for its time, it's dated, don't look back fondly, or it's not as good as you remembered, they love the movies, TV shows, and video game reboots and remakes. Everything ages, that's life. I hate recency bias and contrarian opinions that most people use. They'll use them to be edgy or nitpick at the good art in the past. Also, I hate how people switch up on artists and celebrities due to their political opinions, religious beliefs, or personal views that don't match up with theirs. They'll say: they wasn't never good to begin with or I'm disappointed with them due to their legal issues/controversies. Artists and celebrities are not your role models and they're not in your life. They don't owe you nothing and you don't owe them nothing as well. If you don't want to support them, you have the right to do so. But, don't use virtue signaling to shame others for liking or finding entertainment in their art. You can separate the art from the artist because most people who like their art don't endorse their actions or behavior. Great video, Shades.

Yes I was named after Atticus Finch by my Mom. And by far that image you put is one of my favorites since my trip to The Netherlands. And also…. Chappelle: You have no power heeeere….Bitches!

You know, Atty, I thought that Atticus thing was only a pseudonym and the fact that is your real name is honestly really awesome, considering what kind of a character your namesake is. Also, your thoughts on the walkout done by Netflix employees. To me, it's their right to do that but they really have to know that no matter how crude Dave Chapelle is, it's still a joke.

Same here. While I didn't give a flying shit about it as we did it, we read the original book and watched the film back in my Sophomore year in high school.

I like your videos because you make me see things from a totally different perspective. I'm used to apply the "aged poorly" argument for things more on a technical level (ie. the system mechanics of a videogame, the production process of a record, etc), but I've always tried to couple that line with some reasoning as to why it's not that bad, or a starting point that can be improved. Your video has given me the idea that I am dismissing the creative process behind it and that isn't right either because at the end of the day it's not only about appreciating something for what it is, but doing it for what it offers. It was a great piece on this topic, shades. Thanks for taking that critical/analytical spark of yours above and beyond.

Isaac Hayes didn’t leave South Park. Members of the Scientology Church made that choice for Isaac who’d been dealing with a stroke at the time. One of his sons even confirmed the truth on the matter.

With Grease and it's 'problematic' ending. I'm just gonna say something that's mind blowing about why being offended by the ending is stupid. Are you ready for this? Come a little closer. Closer. Closer. There we go. *ahem* DANNY WAS ALSO TRYING TO CHANGE FOR SANDY TOO! The people who complain would know about this if they saw the film. ...I may or may not have a soft spot for this film. Also, dark humor is great. With language. As long as it isn't in a blanket statement context. I don't get the issue. With art and propaganda, it's a lot like judging the line between art and pr0n. As in it depends on who you ask.

Once again this validates the fact that I don't need to feel ashamed of enjoying something as entertainment whether I agree or disagree with anything my favorite artist stands for, in music or outside of music. Applies to other art forms too. I remember when I saw a post on yours on FB about the whole Paramore thing with "Misery Business", that was a bit something. However, I didn't know about the Buddy Nielson part until now. Granted, to this day, I don't agree with Hayley with pulling "Misery Business" from the band's live shows, however, I still respect her decision on the basis that at the end of the day, what she does with her music is up to her. Same with Buddy. Spoiler alert, I'm not a fan of Buddy nor have I listened to his music. In my own opinion, "Misery Business" is kind of overrated. This coming from a Paramore fan. Either way, "Misery Business" will not go away and neither will Buddy's original versions of his music. They'll still be around to enjoy for years and years to come, so it's not really the end of the world. That's all I wanted to say. Side note: I really loved your bit on the ranting community here. It's weird knowing the huge chunks of videos of Meli, Stevie, Stout, and Take Shot are not on their channels anymore. Having previously been a fan of them since 2013, it makes things all the more surreal.

And I'm already pissed off. Not for anything to do with the video itself, but the fact that it premieres when I leave for work tomorrow, but I get to know I'll miss the premiere a day more. SMH. Just dicking around of course, looks like an interesting topic

Good video as always, Shades. The only time I think something hasn't aged well is when pieces of media present outdated information, when something happens bad to the creator that invalidates their work, or when it contradicted years later. For example, anything by MundaneMatt where he ranted about false flagging agreed aged horribly as it was revealed he was a false-flagger himself. Same with cigarette commercials, for obvious reasons. Also, in regards to propaganda, to me, a good example of it were those cartoons created by the Jehovah's Witnesses that use dollar-store animation that teach kids having fun and being accepting of LGBT people is evil. Since its intentions were to sway people to believe in what they believe, that fits the bill of propaganda. Something that isn't what you like should not be labeled as propaganda. That's being shallow. Also, who was the bald guy in glasses with the Kermit the Frog body that was near Dahvie Vanity, Shades? He looks familiar.

I think you might have misunderstood some things. Art that doesn't age well, just don't age well. There isn't anything more to it. Blackface was a part of art. Is that ok? There is plenty of anti gay propaganda in several old movies, plays and pieces of music. Is that ok? I'm of course not saying we should condemn these artists, but i don't think the specific works of art needs to be accepted as ok. There are practices in every part of society we no longer deem ok. So we avoid these things, and for the most part, this works. We shouldn't start burning books, films, CDs and comedians, but we should be able to say that it's not OK. Condemning someone for liking it is of course unnecessary and outright stupid. But all in all, racist, homophobic, transphobic etc art, laws, ideas and practices is also unnecessary. And saying the "times were different" in the 90s doesn't really help. We all knew racism, homophobia, sexism and all that were bad. We just didn't care due to a lack of backlash. So art that doesn't age well is just that. Art that doesn't age well. Sure, watch it and laugh if you think it's funny. But don't defend the art itself as it doesn't need nor deserve to be defended.
