Americans collectively have more than five billion items sitting at home that they no longer use, according to a 2019 survey by online marketplace Mercari. One-click shopping and the globalization of overseas manufacturing has made it easier than ever for consumers to acquire goods. According to the Self Storage Association, an industry trade group, more than 10% of households in the U.S. rented a self-storage unit in 2020, 18% more than in 2005. The self-storage industry has continued to outperform during the pandemic, with several companies reporting strong occupancy and healthy demand, according to the research site Yardi Matrix. But with headwinds threatening the economy will self-storage companies like Public Storage and Extra Space Storage be able to maintain their momentum? And what will new disruptors like Neighbor and Clutter mean for the future of the industry?

Most charities are scams. Even the red cross was caught scamming. Charities keep the high majority of profits and give very little away. I would rather post it on craigslist or offer up free section. Or I have also taken it to a poor apartment complex and leave it by their dumpster so poor tenants pick it up

🤦🏼‍♂️👉🏻Public storage has shady unscrupulous owners. They do you wrong and just brush you under the rug if you complain. Many large businesses are like that. It's like ethics, professionalism and morals are becoming things of the past. Behind these famous logos we see as common and reputable are sinister egomaniac owners and higher management.

That’s why become a minimalists. Just keep the items that brings joy or are useful and discard the rest. It’s easier said than done but once it’s starts it’s money saving, clutter-free lifestyle

If it’s just there and the purpose of being there is because they’re just “decorations” and no “spark of joy” brings in you then it’s no use. You might have heard of Marie Kondo who said that only keep things that “sparks you joy.” So if that’s the case with those knickknacks then yeah keep them. If not then donate them

But sometimes there are a lot of things that bring you joy or are useful. I have a ton of Christmas decorations, outdoor equipment, and entertaining items. The amount of stuff drives me crazy sometimes, but it’s nice to have. I can totally see the value in keeping the stuff you like but only use occasionally in a storage unit out of the way.

I am completely shocked by how much in demand storage is right now. A while back a bought a 11k sq fr warehouse with highway frontage. I subdivided it into 4 suites and invested a lot of money into them in hopes of leasing them out to tire shops, mechanics, body techs, welders, etc. It turns out the most sought after use for these suites were storage. I was able to lease out the whole building to 4 tenants to a total of 11500 a month. These are small businesses who were moving out of small storage units and were just looking to upgrade. Regardless, I can’t believe people are willing to pay that much for just storage.

Armando you have a good view of the business market. However, think of the shock most restaurants and foodservices had to deal with when the shut-down occurred. I was in restaurant and hotel management 29 years and I can speak with authenticity…I might have had to rent space off-premsies to store non-perishable things and buy for the estimated shortages caused by vendor supply shortages. It is a vicious circle.

They offer super cheap price to entice you. Once you’re in, they’ve got cha. Raising price every few months or so based on the demand. When you question them, the managers just shrug their shoulders and tell you “It is what it is.” So people, get rid of things you don’t need.

Always remember self storage is rent on things you don't need. That 60$-100$ a month could paying a bill or a nice meal somewhere, I always say if you have the ability occasionally take a day off and organize and throw stuff away. It's amazingly relaxing to clear the clutter, the only things I wouldn't throw away is old games, cards, and anything considered collectible through a simple google search.

I rented one for about 5 months when I sold my house and was moving into a new one......but once my house was done I moved it all out and closed my account...

I did the same thing. I rented a 10x30 climate controlled unit. It was extremely convenient to have so much extra room. I had it for 3 months. I would bring a small radio and had plenty of room to sort through and get rid of a lot of stuff

I’m surprised that the report didn’t mention the huge number of people that stop paying the monthly rent, and abandon whatever they have in storage. These places then auction the unit’s content to the highest bidder and make/recover the money not paid by the renter. That’s another industry on it’s own.

They’re actually not making as much as you think. A unit can sometimes go for as low as $10 and the original owner still has to make up the difference.

I'll only pay 250-300 usd max for a 10x10 unit . Lowest rate in my area is 120 usd . I pay 150 usd at one facility. 200 usd at another. (I used to until I went and switched over the months) 10x10 unit is easy to get on minimum wage full time

I had a friend that started with 5 storage units, and after working with her for over a year, she is down to 3. I downsized to a smaller house during the summer and rental a 16ft dumpster and started chucking stuff I haven't used in years. Best decision ever as I move with very little 📦 📦📦📦📦📦

@@MyBloomingLife Yes, I was aware of that, but I think this tactic in general is a way of BS'ing people. You will often see people trying to overstate things by using this tactic. The report that was being quoted here was released by a company that works in self storage so it is their interests to make people think their business is booming.

Self storage is great for people who own a business. I primarily use it to store my inventory. It’s a lot cheaper than getting a warehouse

Can you explain that to me? I bought a 11k sq ft building with highway frontage and subdivided into 4 suites in the hopes of leasing it out to tire shops, mechanics, body shops, welders, etc. Turns out the most sought after use for these were storage. I leased out all 4 of them within a month at an average price of 2875 per warehouse. I was completely surprised they were willing to pay that much for storage, I always figured it would’ve been cheaper for them to use those storage units. It turns out most of them were actually moving out of storage units.

@@Ar938 my storage is 10x20, and i pay about $165/month. Although the price per square footage is obvious a lot higher than what a normal warehouse would cost per month, my small business model just doesn't justify for a warehouse yet. At least with a storage, I don't have to pay overhead.

@@hardon4life Yeah, it has highway visibility and is 14 minutes away from downtown Dallas. Since they’re suites in commercial zoning, the city allows business use as well. 3 of them are purely storage and the fourth one is using it as a mixed use for vehicle storage and to run a small car sales lot, that’s the one with the highest rent.

Yes, good idea especially if quantity purchasing will save on unit cost but the items must be non-perishable. But I found back in the 1960’s that hedging on a market product is risky because by the time the last of a hedged purchase runs out, the price has come back down or gone lower. If I buy to hedge it will be limited to short-term consumption.

If you haven't used something in 2 years you should. 1. sell it. 2. give it away. 3. Throw it out, it's worthless. This is an old rule of thumb that will keep your home free of useless junk.

I’m a Civil Engineer and we’ve had a number of companies come to us in the past 2-3 years with new proposed Self-Storage locations that they’re looking to build. My manager has been an engineer for 20+ years and has only worked on 1 or two of these before 2017. It’s kind of crazy how fast this industry is expanding

I feel the pain. My mil passed and my wife is mourning. But she wants to save everything! My home is stacked with boxes and boxes of stuff. I have a 10x9 unit full and a 10x15 approaching full. None of it's really of any value, just trinkets, seasonal holiday clearance stuff, etc

I live in a 19’ 30-year old travel trailer. I do laundry in a laundromat five miles away every three weeks for $7.00. to maximize time travel and cost, I have ample underpants, socks, t-shirts and handkerchiefs to last three weeks. This seems the most economical approach for this 80-year old with a life in business, 20 years self-employed.

Same. I got displaced and am in a weird living situation. When I move into permanent housing I plan on ditching a ton of stuff in my storage unit. Whether it’s given away or sold, I don’t want it anymore (for the most part).

It's a problem for most people. For example, I bought a 32'' flat screen 10 years ago, since I bought a 60" 5 years ago, I only turned on my 32" TV twice in the past 5 years. It has been sitting in one of the rooms collecting dust. I wont sell it now, because the value only worth $50. But it's sad to just see it sitting there.

The only time I used a storage unit was when I worked 2 jobs in the same area as the storage facility. So I kept my work uniforms there. There was a laundromat & a 24 hour gym on the same block. So I paid $20 a month for storage & $40 a month for the gym. There were times I didn't even go home & would sleep in the break room at my job. Then shower at the gym.

Public storage just raised my rate. 150 to 180 a month. Update: just got an email for another increase to $231.20 starting 11/01/21. I guess they want me out lol

After selling my big scooter we realized we no longer needed the stuff stored with it. We got rid of some and moved the rest. The biggest problem was storing seasonal tires. Spent the $1200 a year on vacation trips.

IMHO hoarding is a form of mental illness. A neighbor I knew asked me to fix something in her kitchen. Each room was so packed with junk she had a pathway to get about the house. She would go to yard sales and thrift stores and buy stuff. I helped her unload her trunk one time and asked if she donates things. She answered “no, I’ll sell it”. but she never held a sale in her driveway.

One word - hoarding. People who mindlessly accumulate stuff often have terrible financial habits. Then they lose their home and don’t want to part with their “treasure” so the stuff goes into a storage unit.

Honestly I never understood the concept of paying for storage.. sometimes the junk that's inside the storage is worth less then what you pay in storage fees... I rather throw the crap away and buy a new one I need it again.

It’s not a bad thing if you use storage properly. Like, you can get a unit to store a motorcycle during winter if you don’t have the room at an apartment complex. Hoarding old useless junk for the sake of keeping it is the issue.

Good point, as I have offered, when working in my unit, to help folks load or unload. They seldom accept the offer of help. Yet while there, I watch what they are putting in their unit and it looks more like junk than valuables. If we dug deeper into reasoning we might learn why they are needing self-storage. Perhaps these renters think they will be there short term or they don’t know how long it will take them to re-settle.

A lot of people hang onto items they do not use anymore because looking at the item reminds them of fond memories. It is possible to still have reminders of those good times which take up less space. Take photographs of the belongings which remind you of things. Then create a photo album for those types of photos. When you are feeling nostalgic, feel free to look at the photos without having so much actual stuff.

Millenials use storage the most because many are poorer than previous generations. Very few own a house to store the little stuff that they own. Also the social safety net just isn´t there like in previous generations with many divorced parents who no longer live together in the house they grew up in.

When I shopped for a storage facility a year ago, security and location were the top priorities. I lucked out with my choice. I go to the unit at least five times a weekon my wayb in to town to keep organizing move things. It sure would have been smart to label and pack totes sooner than I did. To give things away is a challenge because many people are trying to downsize and de-clutter.

1) Accumulating stuff is an animal instinct. Think of squirrels hoarding nuts for the winter. - You're much better off hoarding your MONEY. 2) People associate an item with a memory. "This is the outfit I wore to XYZ event. Remember how fun that was?" Discarding the item is like killing the memory. 3) People also think they'll need an item someday, which is very unlikely. If you haven't used, say, your rollerblades or baseball glove in a year, you'll probably never miss it.

That is an interesting prediction…let’s watch and see what they do. I am amazed at how many shipping containers have been purchased and placed on private property for storage. Maybe that’s what developed the business called PODS.

@@compactcow well I pay for phone parts(I repair phones for fun) so technically its an item as I have dozens of loose parts for my phones and more for my computers which are easier to fix due to being larger and more standardized.

As far as I know you can't receive mail to a storage unit. So good luck getting a bank account, registering to vote, getting a job, etc.

Other than seasonal or home construction items, I get rid of anything not in use. Replaced my sound bar and sold the old one on Craigslist. My kids can buy their own stuff as I put money into their mutual funds instead of a storage unit.

I'm admittedly torn between getting rid of a few good pieces of furnitire or selling it off when I move. I don't want to do storage though, but I want the "minimalist" look to my next apartment. The couches are being chucked (too disgusting and broken even for sale, except maybe some arm chairs) and my dressers are also likely going to be sold. I want lighter furniture so moving is always easier and I can do like a cloth storage box kind of dresser instead.

Well, I'll see if my mom wants the furniture first as she gave it to me to begin with, though she'd actually have to put something in storage to keep it, XD! She too changed the aesthetics of her room scheme and this massive dresser won't fit in her room. But if not, yeah, let me see if a charity will take it!

Now you are thinking practically. But I suggest you keep in mind your personal likes that make you happy and try not to give up so much that you feel downtrodden. A happy medium always helps.

@@shermananderson700 True, but I'm really excited to declutter and running it through in my head several times has shown that there's very little I'm attached to and will want to keep. My family has had moments of leaving everything behind when needing to suddenly move, and instead of doing the opposite (making me want to hold onto everything tightly), it helped me to ensure I nevet got too attached to things. I have a few precious items that aren't that big that I'm keeping (stuffed animals from my childhood, some porcelain dolls I miraculously haven't broken yet), but the rest has my blessing to get the hell out of my house 😂.

I don't know, my first apartment was furnished with crap from my friends and family storage units. So there is something to be said about keeping thing that might be useful to family later. Never know when a house might burn down.

Public Storage, Extra Space Storage, CubeSmart, National Storage and Life Storage are the big storage companies. I think they're all publicly traded.

There’s a man in our small town, near age 90, who hoards. I went to his house shortly after his wife passed three years ago to try to help him find something. I couldn’t believe what I observed. His yard is also filled with vehicles he will repair some day and try to sell on Main Street at a business property.
