PS I'd also agree with you on the rotations. Part of the reason Bellingham is cooking himself, is he's dropping into left back, then running beyond Kane. Southgate should tell them rotation is fine but as a general rule only one position away from your starting role, in any direction. As Cruyff always used to say you should have pride in running the minimal possible distance. More brain less brawn. Rice as well has been running insane distances. And fatigue affects your coordination.

Smashed it again. Great analysis as always. I can’t believe so many “fans” are calling for their manager to be sacked after topping the groups. He’s made plenty of mistakes, but he got the job done, and the knockouts are a completely different game. Backing your manager seems to be something of the past for some reason. I think Mainoo and Gordon will be absolutely crucial. People are saying that Palmer changed the game, but I have to disagree. He was great individually, but I don’t see how he made the team play better as a whole? Maybe he helped to move the ball a bit quicker with his positivity. Either way, Mainoo and Gordon were the ones who really changed how the whole team looked. I think Bellingham is the right player to go with in the middle. I saw something recently that said Foden has made ONE pass to Kane this tournament. That’s nowhere near good enough, especially when he’s getting in Bellingham’s way like he is. I’d even argue that Palmer could start CAM over both of them if we are looking for more creativity. We have plenty of ball retention, so maybe a more creative CAM could be of use. I’d give Bellingham a go without Foden causing problems first, tho. I also think Bellingham’s movement would work better with Kane dropping deep.

Slothgate is hindering the players from doing what they can usually do. Kane was near the halfway line with the ball just as Bellingham made a run into the box with no one tracking him. At Spurs, Kane would have seen Son do that and try to play a ball through to him near the penalty spot, instead he ignored/missed it and tried to spread to ball out to the far right. Presumably on orders to keep spreading the play side to side. Thanks to the flick from Kobbie, Kane was on the edge of the penalty area with time to set up and take a shot but played it wide to Palmer who scuffed it from a difficult angle. Declan Rice was just outside the penalty area with a large gap in front and instead of advancing and getting in a shot passed to Foden who was offside.

Kane should get out of midfield, after all these years it's just boring

Agree with everything you have said, apart from Mainoo in front of Wharton. I would play Wharton. He wins tackles and is much more incisive with his passing. Apart from that, you are right.

Both Kane and Bellingham are used to playing a false 9 role. If we go with your proposed starting line up, we'll essentially be playing 4-1-3-2 in possession, with either Bellingham or Kane dropping deep to receive the ball in build-up. It could work really well, but there would need to be a really good understanding between the two strikers to make it work, and Mainoo would have a HUGE responsibility in the middle in possession. When playing against a tight midfield 3, you'd want to rely on your fullbacks coming inside to provide support. For that reason I think TAA would probably be a better fit for the system as he likes to drift inwards.

I agree completely. Was saying the same as you last night. Was really happy when Southgate brought Mainoo on. Hoped he'd bring Gordon on earlier. One additional thing I'd consider is if things still don't look right, and Shaw is still injured, I'd consider Saka at LB. I'd then maybe bring Bowen in at RW to replace Saka. I'm not too familiar with Bowen but I understand he's more likely to play as a traditional winger than Palmer.

simply switching Saka and Foden could be the simplest change to address the balance issue on the left and get Foden and Bellingham out of the same area of the picth (the inside left). Walker offers natural width on the right to account for Foden coming inside right. whilst Saka has been used to keep the width on the right and could just do that on the left (as a natural left footer). but I'd rather go three at the back with Gordon in for Trippier. like in that image at the end if you just swapped Foden for Trippier in that general shape it looks much better.

When Wharton came on against Bosnia, that should've been the Eureka moment for Gareth and has staff. Okay it was Bosnia but he took control of the game and looked to play incisive passes against a low block. Not to mention of course how good he was against Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea etc. WHARTON MUST PLAY!!!

Great analysis as always. The only thing I would disagree with is to not drop Foden but to drop / rest Bellingham. He has been anonymous and worse in the last two games.

Maybe play Bellingham and Rice in CM with Foden in 10, and Gordon/Palmer in Lw? Also if he doesn't want much, he could simply switch Saka with Foden. Foden can come inside with Walker overlapping outside. On the otherside Trippier can do his underlap with Saka doing the same as Walker. Then Mainoo can also play.

Now i see why Rashford should have been in the team instead of a profile like Eze
@stevedunne6760
@stevedunne6760 Ай бұрын
I'm a Palace fan but to a large extent I agree. Eze is something of a confidence player and takes time to warm up. Can be frustratingly wasteful in possession at times. Not ideal for a sub at international level. Wharton, on the other hand, is exactly what we need next to Rice. People talk about our flat tempo and he's the profile of player to sort that out. He gets things moving and he's fazed by nothing. Real class act. Having said that, was really impressed by Mainoo the other day but think he did what Gallagher was supposed to do but much better. I imagine he'll start next game and deservedly so. So probably a little late for Wharton now. P.s. Gordon is the pacey Rashford profile here.

Though I think we should drop Bellingham, it's easier to drop Foden now cause he's not been training. Southgate likes easy ways out.

that first image you put up doesn't really reflect where Bellingham was that often (check out his heat map). he was much more often in the left '8' and in the first half Gallagher on the right '8' postion, actually as you showed during the 'in possestion' segment.

How is a national team manager and his coaching staff not seeing this obvious issue on the left hand side that we can all see? I’m assuming they’re not seeing this issue because they’re not doing anything to address it. The only thing he did with Foden and Bellingham is have them rotate by taking turns on the left side so that they can both play the “ten” position. It’s brain dead coaching
@XboneMalone
@XboneMalone Ай бұрын
During yesterdays match, I looked up Southgates backroom staff (given the show he was providing for the nation). Steve Holland is his right hand man. He's the one that takes training. He's ALWAYS been an assistant, career highlights being working at Chelsea under such attacking masterminds as: Andre Villa-Boas Roberto Di Matteo Jose Mourinho Rafa Benitez Guus Hiddink (OK an exception that proves the rule) Antonio Conte So is it any wonder the England team has not developed an attacking style, let alone basics/fundamentals!

Decent analysis. You didn't really have to stretch yourself, as the issues and solutions are pretty obvious. The difficulty for Southgate is it is a massive decision to drop Bellingham or Foden. The rest is easy. As others have said I'd start Foden. He looks in way better form. I'd pick Wharton over Mainoo if it's a more difficult opponent, as Mainoo gets awfully high when we have the ball, which is fine against Slovenia, but could be an issue against stronger sides. The other thing is I'd use Bellingham and Palmer off the bench from the 55 to 60 minute point. Got to give them time to have an impact. And with such a strong squad, why not maximise it, by getting them on the pitch. The quality doesn't reduce when you bring those players on, yet they will be completely fresh. I'd also consider Watkins from the 60 to 70 minute point as Kane diesnt look fully fit.
