That was a really cool experiment. I honestly thought that the chain would go first in the first model and was surprised to see the frame bending. Very cool.

With this you can rip things apart with the force of your hydraulic press! With a larger redesign of this table you can make a whole lot of interesting videos.

I like this format. It teaches structural engineering through problem solving. We can see where the weak points are and how adding features, such as a corbel, makes the structure stronger. How about doing this with a simple box, table or bridge? Maybe try crushing a car from front to back, and try to find a design that best protects the occupants. You'll probably have to use weaker material so the structure doesn't become stronger than your stand.

It's all dependent on how strong the chain center chain and how well you've welder the mild steel to hardened steel (from the chain). That's it. Either the welds will give out, or the chain will. The steel tubing will just bend and twist until it's crushed into.

I always watch the crushes with my daughter.... When she saw the tea party i just heard this sqeaky voice sounding "Nooo" :( When i turned my head her lips was truly upside down :( It was so cute!

yes laurie, this is the kind of content i enjoy, it shows me your builds and it shows them being slowly crushed, its fun and very easy on the eyes and mind. honestly its hard to say this content and the almost myth busters style content you had before with the explosives is all the same kind of entertainment value.

I really like the format of this video, testing something and then trying to improve it. I found it more interesting than the normal destruction.

Observations: 1.) The tube section failed on BENDING --- not the tension chain, which shows the chain is much stronger. 2.) To set the chain strength to govern, use a solid square bar instead of a square tube --- to increase bending capacity. 3.) Use full-pen welds when joining or splicing the bars to match weld and bar strengths. Of course, I know you share the same observations. I am just happy to mention those.

I really like the test, rebuild, and retest format. Especially with failure analysis.

I'm curious what the rated load capacity of the chain was? Might be interesting to check some different products like chain, cable, straps, turnbuckles etc. You could even compare like products with the same rating manufactured in different countries? It'll break at whatever the breaking pressure is, for the one chain that's in tension. The other two chains are basically just decoration (in terms of this test- really, they're needed to stabilize it)

Would you be able to replace the (weak link) chains with steel cable? Might change the results.

Always know your weakest link. In the first test, I knew your frame would give! Not enough reinforcement. I know this because, in my industry, it is critical to know and understand this. I work in steel infrastructure and heavy lifts are critical lifts. My suggestion (And this is nothing but fun) is to use a 3/8, 5/8 and, 3/4 chain. And restructure your framework to compensate in line with each chain size and framework. Now that would be something to watch. My prediction is that your frame will fail. Unless you are not able to meet this challenge? If not! I understand that everyone has their limits. O! Consider this a challenge. Whether you chose to do a challenge like this is your call. Also note grade 80 or 100 chains.

That was a very weak chain. In one of my professions, my job was sometimes to test winch and hoisting chains by pulling until they break. it was a safety test. They were very strong. They stretched more than double in length before breaking. It was very fascinating to see.

Want to impress? No problem. Say this: "My job is to apply iterative design methods to analyse and improve the integrity of tensegrity structures using a hydraulic press and digital audio and visual ducumentation."

who ever came up with this floating table idea is a genius. it actually looks like it's floating when actually it's hanging by one chain. stabilized by two. just Genius.

Suggested improvements: 1. Make the diagonal struts steeper, reaching all the way to the frame such that the pushing force extends straight to the center of the frame beam. 2. Add weight to the other side of the table so it balances on the central chain and approaches zero force on the other two chains.

Nice!!! Maybe keep the table and use the Anchor Chain from a ship? Looks like the chain broke at the weld? Are there other types of chains stronger than steel like Kevlar or carbon fiber? Those would be interesting to compare to the steel.

You can test the strenght in different types of wires and ropes maybe. Could be interesting to see. 👍👍

That chain reiteration is epic

You should weld on a few lugs, then with a few shackles, attach some grade 8 chain. The reason I think you should do it this way, instead of just welding the stronger chain, is that the heat of the welding process will cause the chain to become brittle around the weld zone.

I like to have one of those tables that's a cool design and the person who came up with that must be a very smart fellow indeed! Hopefully we can see those tables over here in America in stores or online for sale if it's not already! I rather go into a store than shop online, it's just alot better and has become old fashioned and one of the reason I go is to just look and savor the moments of actual going into stores because it seems that someday they will be a thing of the past so going in stores might become special times until those days come when we can't any longer which will be sad. I am probably one of the few who really enjoys going in stores and shop.
