Although I love geeky tests like this, you're doing it wrong. As your testing progressed, your tires got hotter and hotter because you didn't start cold each time. When Tesla says 42 PSI, that is cold. 42 really means that operating PSI will be closer to about 47 after warming. If you want to do this test right, then start each time with cold tires or your results will be seriously flawed. Tire pressure generally increases by about 1 psi for every 8 degree increase in tire temperature. Typical tires experience a temperature increase of 40-50 degrees after running on the highway for a half-hour

So could he just take tire Temps and adjust tire psi?
@darkhorse2reign
@darkhorse2reign Жыл бұрын
When doing air pressure in tires, you also have to account for which side of the car may be in direct sunlight. Those tires will be starting at a higher "cold" PSI than tires in the shade. Happened to me a lot in trucking. There are other little things I learned such as filling up tires at sea level or high altitude. Moving (in a truck) from one altitude to another makes a significant difference in tire pressures.

This is the correct answer. This should be a 3-day test, with similar weather and temperatures each day.

It could be a one day test, but you would want to start with low pressure and work your way up ideally. Unless I’m thinking about it wrong also

Most important aspect: braking distance. Much more important than range. And it changes immensely when you over inflate or less than recommended.
@sarchizm
@sarchizm 3 ай бұрын
One thing you didn't consider was the over inflated tire became larger which means you went farther with each roll of the tire. That would increase efficiency a little. And the deflated tire was smaller doing the opposite.
@edsinofsky
@edsinofsky Жыл бұрын
we see similar results with modern bike tires. High pressure is lower rolling losses but higher suspension losses (bike or car goes up and down when hitting roughness). Lower pressure and the bike (or car) goes over the road more smoothly and even faster. Lately the lower I go the faster and smoother it seems... to a point...

Rolling resistance doesn’t matter as much at highway speeds it’s more about aero. Better test would be in town low/medium speed.
@danburstein7009
@danburstein7009 11 ай бұрын
Ben, I'll add one more factor that may have skewed results...outside air temp....hotter air is less dense causing less air resistance and more range all else same. If you started test in the morning when cooler by the time you ran the 37 psi test with hotter temp that would make the range better then if temp was the same for all 3 tests. I agree with other comments longer test loop, starting with cold tire pressures, same battery charge, etc would also help get more accurate results.

A few things to remember when choosing tyre pressure on Tesla vehicles, for safety reasons. Tesla is optioning for one recommendation and that is 42 psi. That be driving on Autobahn doing 100+mph, driving with heavy trailer and or with full load capacity (people and cargo). Tyre pressure is determined by weight of car + load and highspeed driving. 98XL tyre model 3 OEM wheel at 42psi has a load capacity of 1650lbs. If you dropp the pressures load capacity will also be low. If you drive with empty (max 3 people) it's safe to lower the pressures. And vacation with family and cargo, you should opt for more pressure on rear tyres (45psi) to minimize flex. Driving with 45+psi on empty car and thinking you would save gas or KWh is wrong. As you want a bit of flex in tyres so the car glides over unpuritys on the road, for better aerodynamics. The higher the pressure the bumpier the ride becomes. And every time the car bounces energy is wasted in vertical movement. Tyres job is consistent of many small suspensions, to find the right amount of pressure you must know the weight.
@fredsalter1915
@fredsalter1915 Жыл бұрын
50psi for the win!!! FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry for the edit. Stock OEM psi will lead to excess outer tire wear an leave you with extra tread right in the middle of the tire. Over inflate 5 pounds and you will get even tire tread wear.

Some suggestions on test improvements: Warm the tires up before the first run so that all runs start with warmed up tires - this takes at least 10 miles. Get something like a Kestrel anemometer and measure the wind speed at the start and end of each run. Do a loop course is good and helps to eliminate wind effects, but its not perfect. Do the three runs you did, and then repeat the 47 psi run - this lets you know if conditions have changed in the course of the testing. If you get the same results on both 47 psi runs, that's a big credibility boost. Doing multiple loops at each pressure would tell you whether your testing method is working - if the loops at the same pressure agree well with each other, that's a major boost in your test method credibility. Each loop could be made shorter so you are not out there all day driving. I do some MPG tests for different camper van configurations and have put a fair bit of time into coming up with a good MPG method - Its documented on the Build A Green RV website under the Tests tab, Roof rack MPG effect test. Thanks for your work on this.

I think your best bet would be to turn off regen and do a coast-down test on a long stretch of quiet road. That would really let you identify subtle differences in rolling resistance. Too many variables with other cars on a road.

I know your preference in tires is Michelin. My wife had the CrossClimate2 installed on her Ford Fusion. We loved them. I’d like to hear your thoughts on the Hankook ION EVO AO SUV, whether you test them yourself, previous research or if you know someone that has them installed on their Tesla. From my research, Hankook seems to be the better choice over Michelin. Again, I’d like to hear your thoughts on the subject. Thanks in advance.

maybe this is a more effective test NOT on freeways but on more stop and go city streets. having a low psi coming from a frequent stop and go decreases efficiency compared with high psi which rolls the tires more easily and efficiently.

6:20 It's interesting how fuel/current efficieny DROPPED slightly at the higher(47psi) than Tesla recommende pressure. Probably the same in the case of gas/diesel powered vehicles. The reason is that with the smaller contact patch at higher than recommended, there is minute slipping going on during acceleration, especially from a dead stop.

the reason there is no effect because ev tyres design to be very flat alongh width . normal car tyres not, so as you increase pressure normal car tyres gets less contact with surface which increases efficiency. but ev tyres not much effected buy pressure in terms of surface contact. the only thing you can do changing tyre size with less contact on surface such as 255 to 225 tyres. but this time traction and handling will be poor
