What did the 1960s cast of Batman think of the Batman films that came out in the '80s and '90s? Some hated them. One loved them. Another wasn't even interested in watching them. Stay tuned for an extra bonus clip at the end!

The Batman comics of the 1960s were serious stories. The TV show dialed it way up to camp, but the movie dialed it way down to dark. I liked them both. The TV show was great fun (the villains could really ham it up), but the movie had to go the opposite if Batman was to be taken seriously.

I was a big fan of the TV show and a big fan of the movie. Mike Keaton was fantastic. But I'm not surprised that the cast of the tv show would be pissed. They weren't even mentioned in the film. And probably hated that a new franchise spun off their coattails. But remember the cast of the TV show was inspired not by the sixties batman but by the fifties version. The Dick Sprang era which was beautiful. And probably my favorite era ❤😂

Adam West was a fine actor and it's unfair he was typecast as Batman. He really could act his butt off when needed and ultimately, I think he got the short shrift in Hollywood.

I agree, he was a competent actor. But so were literally tens of thousands of others. Others that never got a role like Batman, never had their images on the covers of every magazine. In other words, West still got to enjoy the benefits of great success, at least for a time. More than most. If not as much as the top actors of his day (but really, was he as great as a Pacino, Hoffman, etc? No.)

@@lanceevans1689 I've seen his other roles - and yes, I think he was on par with Pacino and Hoffman when he didn't have to ham up a scene (something both Pacino and Hoffman HAVE done). He was brought to Hollywood with a list of other "unknowns" groomed for stardom on TV/film. His name was listed with James Garner and Clint Eastwood among others brought to the same studio at the same time.

Adam West could have played an older Batman in a film based on The Dark Knight Returns. Or Batman Beyond later on.

Some people are on Cloud 9 or in their own private Idaho. Some are on the Moon or Mars. Some are in deep space altogether. West was walking a tight rope of light to his own personal sanitorium . . The reactions of Caesar Romero, Burgess Meredith, Julie Newmar, Frank Gorshwin and Burt Ward are easy to understand. None of them were delusional. But West . . He really, actually thought he would be cast again as Batman?? He was crazier than the Joker.

There's a fan film of the Adam West Batman that's a parody of the Robert Pattinson movie-essentially West stood in for the Pattinson Batman. It was so well done I would pay good money to see a full-scale version of it in the theatre.

I'm only 40 and the 1968 Batman is by far my favorite. I love comedy and Adam West hosting MST3K's Turkey Day is one of my most cherished childhood memories. The 1992 Returns film I genuinely hate for being so pretentious and dark and film student and brooding Cure fan notebook doodle. It also begets the modern era of turgid, pretentious capeshit pretending its for adults. I miss when Batman had no illusions that it was ridiculous nonsense for children. Now Batman has to be R-rated so the manbabies watching it feel like its "mature."

With Keaton reprising his role in Flash, keep in mind he was casted to specifically play an older Batman. Batman in the Burton films would have been much younger. I don't doubt Adam West's ability to play a more serious Batman, and I do think it would have been nice to offer the older cast cameo roles, but ultimately, he was not a good fit age wise for the movie.

Another ironic thing was that the Joel Schumacher film was really a revisit of the 60's Batman. Whether it was intentional or not who knows. Swartzenegger's portrayal of Mr. Freeze was blatantly campy and after hearing Keaton talk about difficulty about wearing the Batsuit I thought the same thing about the padding and its defined muscular design it's just impractical because you were forced to move a certain way. At one point of Adams West's career, he wanted to play James Bond because he wanted to ditch being thought of as the 60's camp version of Batman and he never got that part either or any other one so he just decided to embrace the fact in the end. MST3K Turkey Day. To show some compassion for the OG 60's Batman crew, some actors just don't want to let go of a role they made famous and attach a sentimental value to it because it's so near and dear to them, I think that it was pretty much the case for Romeo, and things change and cinema is no exception. Burt Ward and Julie Newmar were class acts about the new Batman concept. Frank Gorshin was wise enough to put the past behind and praise Jim Carrey.

I agree, part of the reason I liked the Schumacher films as a kid is because they reminded me of the Adam West cartoons. It was very over the top, colorful, while still retaining some of that Burton flair. It was an entertaining mix.

I read Marvel comics when I was a kid in the early 1970s. Mostly Sub Mariner. Sure I picked up a Batman now and then too. The TV show was on as they say same bat time with the same bat channel. I loved it. When the films came out I went. My favorite is the Miller ones with Bale. Did I think Adam West should have been cast in the role Keaton got. No. Adam West was Batman for me for many years though.

Sour grapes, maybe? As a comic book collector and aspiring comic book artist in the 60s and 70s, I would eventually absorb the weird history of Batman. Batman started out in 1939 and was pretty much a detective in a sense. It was fairly straight and serious but not dark. In the 50s, Batman struggled against allegations of possible homosexuality. Then in the 60s, Batman was almost dropped from circulation altogether as sales were not good. Then in 1969 Batman had a resurgence when write Dennis O'Neil and artist Neal Adams took over. The stories became very dark and, more importantly, interesting to read. Batman was saved from extinction as sales went way up. So when the Batman movie with Keaton and Nicholson was released, it also adhered to the dark tone of those comics. Personally, I was glad for that because even at my young age in the 1960s, I thought the TV show was dumb. I did feel that Keaton was a strange choice but he did okay. Nicholson was an ideal choice and great as usual. He arguably stole the movie.

Bunch of old fogeys, I think they were hoping for their careersto be revived by the movie, Adam West was reduced to B movies in the 80s and honestly people wanted something different from the the groovy 60s show , it would have been a flop if they used West, he was an over actor and if they simply copied the TV show people would have hated it in 1989. Batman is a dark story and that's why it's good, going light hearted doesn't work, Batman And Robin is a good example of that. The TV show was good but the franchise needed a change, imagine if James Bond never changed from the original for example, movies must innovate the same as automobiles and television sets. Adam West thankfully got a comeback through Family Guy and was awesome as Mayor West and in the end did get the recognition he deserved

Adam West took a lot of drugs, which is very evident when you look back at interviews. He fit the role well as it was perhaps technically a comedy??? It was so camp! All the guest stars were great, especially Burgeos, Julie and Caesar. Loved the show as a kid, cringe but laugh watching it 50 years later 🤪

If memory serves, the original Batman comics were pretty dark. (Hence the name "The Dark Knight" which I think was from the comics). So really it was the 60s TV show that was out of step with the franchise, being lighter and more "pop" culture based.

There's something my mom told me about where she saw a "Live show or something" where Adam West was being interviewed and Power Rangers was brought up (In comparison to the Batman show). West then said something along the lines of "On our show we had a reason to fight the bad guys but Power Rangers doesn't have that". And I'm here like... *what?* First of all I can't find anything on an Adam West interview where he talks about Power Rangers at all so it probably either doesn't exist or is the most lost piece of media in the world. And second... *what?* Like I'm not a Power Rangers fan at all but both that and 60's Batman are camp nonsense with ridiculous costumes. Then again even if it isn't real I totally believe Adam West would say something like that unironically.

Adam West and Cesar Romero were typical Hollywood narcissists. And of course they were going to go for a younger Bruce Wayne /Batman. But having Adam West play Thomas Wayne Bruce Wayne's dad or Burgess Meredith play Oswald Coblepot's dad would have been a hoot. Personally of all the guys that played the Joker. I liked Jack Nicholson's version of him. It really bothered me to see what the part did to Heath Ledger. Never did see the movie because of that. And i agree with Yvonne Craig about. Alicia Silverstone's and Jerry Oconnel"s Batgirl & Robin respectively. And George Clooney's bat-suit and the addition of the bat-nipples and the design of the costumes could have been alot better. Just my opinion. Have a great day everyone

I agree with this! I can't see Adam West playing Batman in 1989 (unless he was prepared to pass the torch a la Batman Beyond). Having him play Thomas Wayne (and maybe Julie Newmar as Martha?) would have been a nice nod to the old series.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 10 ай бұрын
@@MegaMagicdog They did this in the Batman: The Brave & The Bold animated series. There was an episode where Adam West played Thomas Wayne and Julie Newmar was cast as Martha Wayne! I consider The Brave & The Bold the second-best Batman animated series after Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995 run). B & B is also the second-best American superhero team-up series IMHO after Justice League Unlimited. The Brave & The Bold is also THE CLOSEST we will ever see to a "Golden Age" Batman animated series. The majority of the Batman character designs in the B&B series (villains, Batman himself, Bruce Wayne) were based on the design work of Dick Sprang, the best-known and most celebrated "ghost artist" on the Batman comic books (1946-1954, but he worked in comics overall a bit longer than that). The campier characters like Batwoman (the original, not the lesbian character) were designed by Sheldon Moldoff (the second best-known Batman ghost artist) who was also created as Batwoman's creator.
