How the Cutaway Problem Changed Family Guy

The Family Guy cutaway has become a topic of conversation amongst fans for years. The best Family Guy episodes are often referenced using their cutaways. But what happens when you break down the numbers of Stewie and the Griffins, what do those numbers have to say about the show. Family Guy is not going anywhere, but what is clear, is that the show has a problem that is not going to be easily solved.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Correlation is different than causation. While there's correlation here, you may disagree with my feelings about causation! But in my opinion in this case, the two co-exist! ALSO, relied on an editing expression to create these trend lines and it did not go well lol

It's reflective of how lazy the writing has gotten in general. I watched a newer episode recently & could not believe how shit it was. I can tell you what went wrong. In the same way they moved animation to Korea because its cheaper, the also outsource writing to people who are cheap & not funny. The accountants have already calculated how to make the absolute most money they can with the least investment, and riding the popularity wave is key to getting that lovely money. Just look at the Matrix sequels. They could have recorded a turtle taking a shit and people would still have watched it.

I think what you say is very true. but i believe its not just the cutaways that attributed to this. i recently went and watched seasons 12-15 on Netflix and the one irking feeling i had over and over is that they are just trying way too hard with a lot of their jokes. down to the point that peter breaks the 4th wall in quite a few of them just to push it harder. Anyway. I was wondering if you have ever though of doing a video on the story behind the relationship of the creator of legend of korra / avatar the last airbender and nickelodeon. trust me theres a good story there :)

The only thing I don’t really like about family guy is that they explain almost all their jokes before they tell them. For example they’ll have lines like this. “Ok but first Imma sit here and try and put on a shoe that’s too small” and then have Peter or another character struggling to put on a shoe for 3 mins. And then have the “joke” end with something like, “ah ok this shoe doesn’t fit.”

I mean I can get where your coming from. The joke you pointed out is tedious and stupid, but it’s these kinds of jokes that make family guy what it is for me. A satirical outlet for relatable content. The example you gave doesn’t really fit, but take the episode “saturated-fat guy” where Peter runs his food truck. The guy orders and Peter goes “now write your signature on this iPad that I use to masturbate” and “now turn around and hit your head on the low having thing” and “heres 40 napkins blown by the wind.” Its these relatable and/or explained jokes that make family guy the satirical platform I believe it’s meant to be. They’re nagging fourth wall breaks could also be a testament to it

@ASLTZ丶KARN4GE I mean, you can dislike what something has become but still find something enjoyable in it. I'm in the camp of they have dumbed down the characters since Seth left the writing to go and do other shows. Stewie isn't the same. Peter's just dumb instead of just being a parody of fatherhood. No one can argue it hasn't changed or that it hasn't been as funny as it has. It has what I like to call "Simpsons-syndrome" at the moment. Where it seems to be going through the motions. Hopefully it picks up a bit that Simpsons has started to do more recently.

I think the biggest problem with Family Guy is that the characters are no longer relatable. They have all morphed into caricatures of the characters they once were. Peter started out as a lovable goofball that messed things up because of his incompetence, but his heart was in the right place and the audience could see that he did it with the best intentions, to someone who was just flat out annoying and some times down right mean. He changed from the underdog that you wanted to succeed into someone you wanted to see fail.
@rhondahoward8025
@rhondahoward8025 4 жыл бұрын
No, even from the beginning, I saw Peter as the opposite of Homer. You see you were supposed to _sympathize_ with Homer, not just laugh at him. But with Peter, his moronic tendencies were turned up to eleven so that _he_ could simply be a class clown act. Like this joke: "It's a girl! But she has a penis! Well, we gotta get rid of that." Yeah, Peter was so stupid that he nearly hacked off a newborn baby's penis. That's in an early season. Or when he asked if Lois was pregnant before unceremoniously pushing her down the stairs after she angrily said she wasn't. That was in the Y2k episode. Or how his idea of a "punchline" in a hospital was to make a man think that his wife was a vegetable (paralyzed) before laughing and saying "Just kidding! She's *dead!"*
@sasukeuchihasbuttplug1041
@sasukeuchihasbuttplug1041 4 жыл бұрын
rhonda howard i agree with you, but let’s be honest, Peter would chuck Lois down the stairs even if she was pregnant. I also never really fed into those things because the show used to be something that actually captured the “edgy” and “dark humor” essence. there’s a reason people don’t like it now, because it tries way too hard. peter making a vegetable joke was the perfect amount of edginess. so in a way (sorry about the irrelevant tangent) the original commenter is right because peter wasn’t as polarized as he is now. of course he did things for shock value, but family guy was an edgy show. how do i explain this, peter still had good intentions for pushing Lois down the stairs. he made sure he wasn’t harming anyone else (he asked if she was pregnant) and he saved their family from the apocalypse. we need to think like a moron when it comes to peter. he had good intentions. but now his happy-go-lucky spirit was diminished because the creators decided to make him extremely mean spirited. there’s nothing funny about peter shooting his closest friend’s eye out. nothing was funny about it and it wasn’t edgy, it was stupid. anyways this comment was all over the place im sorry.

@@sasukeuchihasbuttplug1041 No, I get exactly what you're saying. That is true that the show's edginess was more meaningful in the earlier seasons because it was used _sparingly._ It wasn't try-hard edgy, it was just a family show _with an edge._ It reminds me of the kids version of Ren and Stimpy vs the Adult Party Cartoon. The jokes that got PAST censors were so much more memorable to me than when the show was just all-out gross, sadistic, and obscene simply because now there WERE no censors. When I watched Family Guy Seasons 6-10 I really enjoyed it because the amount of cutaways were sparse and there was actually a storyline and some special episodes, I was always waiting for the cutaways to come since in some episodes they were only 5 or less, but now cutaways literally appear in almost every scene and I tend to forget what was the point of the story anymore, almost like the episode revolves around short-story cutaways not the actual characters.

I think viewership problems aren't just the cutaways fault, the characters have changed a lot since the beginning too. I loved family guy in the earlier seasons Peter was a lovable idiot, Stewie was an evil genius baby, Brian was the voice of reason (funny since he's a dog), then I see these newer episodes where Peter is a huge douche to everybody, Stewie is just being a gay stereotype nowadays he's not even evil anymore, Brian is also a jerk now. and the rest of the family is just exaggerating their traits as well. they used to have tons of funny jokes but now they just add tons of unneeded violence for shock humor. At around 6:30, you propose that we aren’t watching less cable TV because of the Super Bowl’s increase in ratings over the past ten years. I believe the ratings for sports channels in general could be drastically different because of the way games are broadcasted live, the traditions (Fantasy, team loyalty, etc.) and the Super Bowl’s international appeal. Family Guy, like most shows, doesn’t have that same sense of community. It is very re-watchable however, which is why streaming services give these shows the most potential.

I don’t know how the show is doing now, but I feel like their still captivating younger audiences today. Young kids to teenagers have grown use to the cutaways and are not seeing how lazy and pointless it all is. To be completely honest, I was the same way. I watched this show when I was barley 11-years-old and I have simply viewed the cutaways as integral to the show. To the point where i questioned why other shows didn’t have cutaways. Humor is subjective, but it’s only when I started appreciating others shows that I realized how lazy Family Guys humor was. But what also grinds my gears, is how in between the lazy jokes and cutaways, are these powerful and emotional/serious episodes full of characters. Example being Brian and Stewie. These episodes develop these characters so well. That single episode where Brian and Stewie are locked in a bank together, is 10 times more powerful then anything from season 9- current. But these episodes are pointless. The development for these characters eventually dies. Stewie goes from a high tech genius to a sexuality confused dude who occasionally forgets his a high tech genius. In fact, later seasons, jokes are around the idea that Stewie is gay and his still a child and the show treats him as such. They have completely given up on the idea of making Stewie into a mad genius and became very lazy with his character. Don’t even get me started on Brian. This character went from Stewie’s intellectual equal and voice of reason to the family, to a scumbag who goes after woman’s bodies. The jokes now is that Brian is a hypocrite who says he loves woman for their souls but is only dating woman for their body. The characters don’t grow, they don’t change, as a matter of fact, they get worse throughout the seasons. So my question is this, why show powerful and serious episodes if they don’t matter? Why disrupt the status quo with episodes that bring so much heart into these characters, if the very next episodes does the exact opposite? Family guy is a show that picked in the early 2000’s, with humor based on the early days of the Bush and Clinton administrations. It’s a show that had a lot to say, but now all is set and done. Maybe it is time to give it a rest, but so long as their are young audiences still watching this show, it won’t go away.

I was revisiting the 1999 episode "Da Boom," the Y2K episode. I think what this analysis missed is that it isn't just a matter of the volume of cutaways - there are still two full cutaways and a number of locational cutaways in the first four minutes of this classic episode. But the majority of the cutaways here are at least tangentially connected to the plot. The location cutaways all establish events occuring as the nuclear warheads fire (the generals noting the misshapen Y in the random Happy New Year pattern of the missile launches; Bill Clinton making a "what the hell" sexual advance on his wife as the bombs go off ) and the true cutaways are directly connected to the events the family is experiencing. As Lois and Peter go through the last bits of their rations in the kitchen, Lois laments all the food they've wasted. Cut to Peter feeding beans to Tom Selleck on their tv screen. Then after finding the grocery store is fully picked over, Peter remarks that Twinkies are a food that could survive the apocalypse; he saw it on a documentary. Cut to the very fun gag about Twinkie the Kid and his Wonder Woman lasso. Then the family goes to seek out the Twinkie factory. In a much later scene, they come across Randy Newman's orchard. No "remember that time," they just actually have a scene with him and it is part of the ongoing plot of the episode. His annoying narrative singing drives them from paradise back onto their quest. Point being, yes, Family Guy has always relied on some degree of nonsequiters for humor; the legendary chicken fight is funny for precisely the reason that reason. But Family Guy at it's best made an attempt to place it's best gags either in the main story itself or did it's due diligence to connect the cutaways to the plot or theme of the episode. "Hey remember that time" became a debilitating crutch, not only in that increased the number of possible cutaways but reduced the requirement to give them any connective tissue whatsoever. This coupled with a move toward ever-crasser and edgier humor, rapid Flanderization of the main characters, and probably McFarlane becoming stretched thin across a sea of other projects left the show a parody of itself.

Sadly Family Guy has had a fondness for jokes similar to that for a long time. While this might be the worst offender, there's a bunch of jokes where the joke is that something just goes on for far longer than it should, like when Peter falls on the sidewalk after finding a ticket for the brewery. That one goes on for half a minute, of just Peter sitting on the sidewalk and saying "ahhhhhh" while holding his knee.

According to your graphics, in the last 5 seasons the cutaways have been dropping constantly, but so did the ratings. 5 seasons in a row feels too big of a sample size to just disregard in reaching that conclusion. Dont get me wrong, i agree that they are part of the problem, but i believe there are more fundamental issues with the show bigger than that, no matter how you feel about the cutaways, if you watch the show on a regular basis, u understand that its something that is part of its identity and also know it will be a hit and a miss, hard to point that as the reason someone would just stop watching the show altogether

Worato It’s just his theory on the manner. I think a much larger context of the problem, which is irrefutable, is the laziness of the writing over the years. That is objectively true. Any show that goes on for far too long is bound to become stale. When you mix this with Seth McFarlane’s own words, particularly on his lack of ambition in continuously making Family Guy episodes over the years, it becomes clear that the issue stemming from an over reliance on cutaways is one of many (although I and the author of this video would argue, rather substantial) symptoms, of a larger problem. There is a correlation between the decreased quality in the show, and the many factors that have contributed to it. Linking the overall decrease quality of the show and its ratings is a lot more easy to prove. However, that doesn’t mean that the criticism pertaining to too many cutaways to the show’s decreased success in ratings is not tied to this as well, it’s just much more elaborately and contextually linked to the overall trend of the show’s downward spiral. The criticism on cutaways is one many examples, not the sole one, but I’d reckon, that it is still a pretty damn big one though.

The fourth wall was broken years ago, they never bothered to rebuild it. Maybe the events in the Griffins' lives itself are the real cutaways from the banality of modern popular culture and the creepy subtexts of 1970s and 1980s sitcoms. That's affected Peter's ability to recall certain things. TV is the only way he knows how to relate to the outside world.

The family guy ratings decline could also be because it was a show that a lot of people watched on TV (as in an actual television) because it was on. The latter seasons losing viewers isn’t exactly only caused by the uptick of cutaways. Most people don’t take into account the number of people who don’t even buy cable anymore. Streaming services allow for people to watch these shows, in any order and never feed back into the “ratings” system. I rarely watched family guy on tv but once Netflix had it I binged it multiple times, years later and it’s on Hulu and I watch it on there. Anecdotally all my friends do as well. I wish there was a way to incorporate such data. Edit: you’ve talked about this so thanks for touching on this. I don’t think the comparison to the superbowl is fair though.

There's a very important piece of information that's missing from this that makes all the difference. Cutaways PER Episode. If you want to say that season one has the least at 57 and season four the most at 303, you need to keep in mind that season one had 7 episodes and season four had 30. Average cutaways per episode Season - (number of episodes) Average 1 - (7) 8.1 2 - (21) 7.8 3 - (22) 4.6 4 - (30) 10.1 5 - (13) 13.8 6 - (12) 9.2 7 - (16) 7.0 8 - (21) 5.6 9 - (18) 5.5 10 - (23) 7.8 11 - (22) 10.9 12 - (21) 9.6 13 - (18) 8.7 14 - (20) 8.0 So yes, while later seasons had more, they also had more episodes per season. The average per episode has stayed relatively consistent throughout, and there's no real trend. The overall average being 8.3.
