have you ever wondered why certain years we're drawn to higher shoes than others? well, what if it had to do with the economy? there have been many discussions about the height of women's shoes and how it correlates to the state of the economy. in today's video i look at a century's worth of fashion trends to see if that seems to be the case. and spoiler: the answer seems to be yes! after a period of hardship we tend to go the other direction and dress luxuriously, and what better way to do that by wearing absurdly high heels?

@@seabreeze4559 It'd be much more likely that women wear bigger heels because they want to look pretty because at least they can control THAT part of their life even if everything else has gone to shit. For a more utilitarian route: it's much more likely that you wear more high heels, even if you hate them, during economic downturns because you feel the need to perform femininity and present yourself in a way that a company will consider you more pleasing and so hire you and keep you

This video has to be a joke. Before the pandemic hit there were many people out and about clubbing and chillin with tall shoes. Now there's an uptick in loungewear. The premise of the video is nice but reality does not align with it. There are MANY trends making there way into the spotlight but this is not one of them. Correlation does not equal causation.

I think this is the effect now but instead of lipstick its eye shadow palettes. Eye shadow has been shadowing over lipstick in trends and brands for a while already and with the new use of masks since last year, people cant even show off their lipstick anyways and definitely opting more for eye catching (hah see what I did there) bold eye makeup looks as it's the only thing masks really allow us to show off face-wise.

Because that's how the economy works. You can't have prosperity all of the time just like you can't have a crippled economy for long either; the economy shifts all of the time because it's impossible to predict how it will move. Covid caused a recession because people aren't working, or buying, as much as they used to but once people go back to normal it will probably recover much faster than other recessions since it's an artificial recession. There's also the fact that money isn't circulating as much because it's all going to Amazon. Stop buying from Amazon!
@rukianur8640
@rukianur8640 3 жыл бұрын
@@peachesandcream8753 The perpetual economic growth demanded by capitalist financial markets is conditioned by conflict; between corporate hunger for profits, and workers' resistance to lower wages and degrading working conditions ie. Women at Amazon's menstruation not being accommodated and being expected to piss in bottles yet its what Bezos requires to garner profit. Recession act as a double edged sword by allowing the rich to accumulate wealth quicker while lowering the standards of the labor force continuing the abusive cycle.
@peachesandcream8753
@peachesandcream8753 3 жыл бұрын
@@rukianur8640 That's not how a recession happens and they are not connected to capitalism because even socialist economies go through recessions. Recessions can occur for a multitude of reasons and it's generally because there is a widespread drop in spending. Before the modern day recessions would happen because of famine or the black plague came knocking on the door. To keep an economy going you need the circulation of money to occur. Let's take a look at nomadic tribes; how do people exchange goods and how do they value those goods? Value comes from demand so the more something is abundant the less it is valued and vice versa and they exchange value-for-value. How would a recession happen in a nomadic tribe? Usually it would be lack of food available that causes a recession and so members would have to cut back on their spending (food consumption) and their productivity would decline maybe even grinding their migration to a halt or forcing them to move on earlier than they otherwise would have despite the costs (i.e. people losing strength and stamina quicker due to lack of food). One thing that is a constant however is the most important people, the chief, his advisors and family, would be the ones to get most of the food because of their status in the tribe. The same thing happens in the modern world. Recessions are a normal part of handling an economy.

This is interesting! I live in Australia (which has been fairly covid-free since mid-2020) and our lives are getting back to normal. I have noticed that whenever my friends and I go on a night out, we now dress to the absolute 9s and will often message each other in the lead up saying something like "gals, heels are a MUST". We now go out to clubs and bars in full on heels and wear crazy sparkly outfits, which we didn't do prior to 2020, or would only do on special occasions. This is 1000000% linked to covid - every time we go out now feels like a special occasion and a chance to show off those insanely impractical outfits! (So, for people still in covid-impacted countries, get excited to whip out those 6-inch platforms!)

OK here's my theory: maybe it's not only about fashion escapism, but fashion brands, knowing people may spend less on "superficial" things when on a crisis, use statement pieces and products that call a lot of attention so that it appeals more to the comsumer and people continue buying even though we may be short on money or depressed, because buying gives a sense of relief or short-term happiness? maybe idk..

@Kayenne54
@Kayenne54 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly so. It's more economical to buy a garment with a lot of fabric which can be "re-purposed" for other garments or uses later. Mini skirts and short shorts have a very limited usage further down the track. Buying a "handkerchief" to use as a top works fine when you can easily afford many more. Not so much when the budget is tight, so better quality fabric and more usable amounts of fabric are sought after. When the budget is limited, people become more discerning on what they spend money on. And it won't be high heels, because lower heels are usually in fashion during recessions/depression times except for possibly very special occasions, or those people who have lots of money regardless of current market events.

When people are out of work, especially the lower classes (who typically use public transportation more often and walk or stand more around the workplace, while people with high-paying jobs most frequently get to work by car and have other employees bring them stuff or come to their office), maybe flats are not needed so much.

This "theory" makes total sense! Its no surprise that gen z uses vintage styles and cottagecore as scapism. Pretending you're in a y2k high school drama by wearing fabulous glittery clothing is a way of scaping from the reality: you're not in regular school, online school sucks and if you wore this outfit in real life, you'd probably get picked on. The same logic with cottagecore, with people pretending they are fairies in a magic forest. Also, teens wearing more bold fits might be a result of quarantine, if you're at home on the daily, no one's gonna bully you by saying your cloths look like sh!t (at least personally). So thats why gen z is wearing more confident looks, in my opinion.

The whole ending of this video was like, yeah. The whole “alternative indie” style blowing up when quarantine was a thing I feel like people want to wear what they really want instead of just being practical because we’ve been home for so long everyone wants to dress up

I totally agree. I sooo remember the platform pumps everyone loved after the 2008 crisis. I remember seeing the jersey shore girls wearing them and we alllllll wore similar shoes to prom 😂

Interesting because I always felt that the late 2000s and early 2010s also was the height of popularity for ballet flat shoes and TOMs and gladiator shoes all of which were the opposite of high heel, which is in contrast to what you’re saying.

I feel called out lol. At the beginning of the pandemic, I started watching CosTube based on suggestions from the YT algorithm, and the YT algorithm eventually recommended lolita fashion videos. And now, I'm into lolita fashion for the extravagance and frills haha.

Wow! This really hit home for me! I’m not much of a heels girl myself, but for the first time in YEARS, I have been obsessed with makeup, eyeshadow, and almost costume like outfits! I’ve always enjoyed fashion and dressing up, but for the past few years, other things have been a priority, and practical dressing made a lot more sense in my busy life. Lately though, dressing up has been taking over my thoughts! I never made the connection that sitting at home for a year, for the first time since my young childhood really, along with all of the depressing circumstances that we are living through, motivates me and gave me the perfect opportunity to explore fantasy and escapism again! And then I watch this video🤯 It really makes sense! 😄 I am to the point where I am not just doing makeup and dressing up to go get coffee, I’m doing it around the house and looking good for me just to make drip coffee at home 😂 just cuz it feels so good after being in pjs for a year!

Literally just got back from dressing to the nines to pick up my to-go order. Walking from my car to the storefront and back, I was complimented 6 times. It was the happiest I’ve been in months. So yeah, fashion as escapism is a Thing.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! Really well said and explained, I always wondered as a child growing up in the early 2000s why everyone where I lived would always dress so fancy with the biggest heels and shiney fabrics and jewels ever when they could barely pay rent ahha, they found a way to look and feel expensive with what was available to them. Looking back you can see it was all very tacky and plastic and fake but that's becoming trending again thanks to coronavirus. Financially my family are really struggling and I've never wanted to dress so fancy in my life, I'm talking full blown cottage core fit, hair and makeup done just to go for a walk in the local park... same with most people I know like I think spending all this time alone at home with no school or work had made us feel bored and the use of social media and TV shows has probably gone up, plus because watching shows is nostalgic in a way thanks to people being able to kiss and hug eachother. I notice that the shows and social media always put their best foot forward and tend not to show the more real/ugly side of the reality, which means we are bombarded with absolute LOOKS, I noticed people have really found what aesthetic they fit into and just completely going for it, because if you're alone all day you want to feel apart of a group and have human interaction with others like you, so it makes sense to go and explore these communities more in depth. The shoes are definitely getting bigger here and I think they look beautiful HAHA, I'm so excited for when I can finally go out with my friends and wear the most piss take cottagecore outfit. I already have everything planned and have made endless mood boards with pinterest images using my college office 365 log in lol. I don't even want to post to my social media anymore just want to do it to have fun, like I keep seeing memes saying stuff like, 'I have to be the prettiest girl at the shop for some reason' 💗

I absolutely love videos like this that show how trends and lifestyle looks are influenced by the events of the world. This reminds me of the Freakonomics documentaries but so much more fun!! I wish more people made videos like this that also go into the economy and compare that to what we chose to look like!

If you haven’t already, I would *love* for you to talk about fast fashion as a whole and how to tell the difference between that and more ethical fashion - when choosing to buy brand new items online or stores. Especially since there are some brands that include fast fashion at such a high price and are not fully honest to their audience about it.

Wow as jazz was escapism so was disco and now it’s back to a more 70s themed songs in a lot of popular songs like say so from dojacat and dua lipa levitating. I think music also effects escapism as well.

Similar to this, I remember my grandma saying something about how fashion trends tend toward shorter, lighter silhouettes when the economy is booming, vs layering up when it's in recesssion.
